Abstract

AbstractThis research aim are to describe the increase of critical thinking ability and quality of learning process with guided inquiry model in high school learners. This research using ?group pre-test and post-test design? with one experimental class and two replication classes. Data will analyzed with some techniques : paired t-test analysis and normalized gain for pre-test and post-test result than analyze of inquiry learning process. The results showed that: (1) the average assessment of learning process using guided inquiry has excellent category, (2) an increase of critical thinking ability in third grade sequentially got 0.35 (medium), 0.59 (medium) and 0.74 (high) in scores and the category. Overall based on the result, implementation of guided inquiry can improve student critical thinking ability about global warming topic.Keywords : Guided inquiry, Critical thinking ability, Global Warming. AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan peningkatan kemampuan berpikir kritis dan kualitas keterlaksanaan pembelajaran model inkuiri terbimbing pada peseerta didik SMA. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain group pre-test and post-test dengan 1 kelas eksperimen dan 2 kelas replikasi. Analisis data menggunakan teknik analisis uji t-berpasangan dan gain ternormalisasi untuk hasil pre-test dan post-test kemudian analisis keterlaksanaan pembelajaran inkuiri. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan (1) rata-rata penilaian keterlaksanaan pembelajaran menggunakan inkuiri terbimbing berkategori sangat baik. (2) peningkatan kemampuan berpikir kritis di ketiga kelas secara beurutan mendapatkan skor dan kategori 0,35 (sedang), 0,59 (sedang) dan 0,74 (tinggi). Kesimpulan penelitian ini adalah bahwa pembelajaran menggunakan model inkuiri terbimbing dapat meningkatkan kemampuan berpikir kritis peserta didik.Kata Kunci : Inkuiri Terbimbing, Kemampuan Berpikir kritis, Pemanasan Global.

Abstract

The unavoidable development of the Internet in 1990s along with the introduction of Google Translate in 2007 have increasingly shifted perspectives previously occupied by translation teachers, translation students, translation process, and most importantly translation product. In the past, the instructions in translation used to rely on teacher resourcefulness and physical availability of texts. Nowadays, they involve in the introduction of freely accessible translation machine, namely Google Translate, which should be commensurate with its professional application and utilization. Thus, this study sought to describe the students’ purposes and attitudes towards the use of Google Translate (GT) for English language learning. Students observed are students of English department program at Politeknik Negeri Malang. Eventually, results of the study illustrate that most students use Google Translate during English language learning even though they realize that there are some problems occurring during the use of Google Translate.

Abstract

This study is completed to implement think-pair-share technique in discussing Know about Business module to enhance students’ ability in reading comprehension. This study was triggered by phenomena found in the classroom where students cannot understand reading texts thoroughly especially when it comes to difficult words and relationship among sentences in the reading texts. The implementation of Know about Business module which has a topic of entrepreneurship is expected to improve students’ learning interest especially in relation with reading skill. This study implements classroom action research methodology. In planning, teacher will prepare for a teaching scenario and learning materials which will be used in the classroom. In implementation, teacher will implement think-pair-share technique in Reading I course subject. During the think phase, teacher will give brainstorming questions so that students will be motivated to think critically. In this phase, students are now allowed to discuss with their friends. During the pair phase, students will gather in some small groups to further discuss the results of their critical thinking in the classroom. The next phase is share and it is when the students express their results of discussion in the classroom. The next phase of classroom action research is observation. In this phase, teacher will observe how the students’ progress is after the implementation of think-pair-share. If students have made progress, teacher will go on to the final phase which is reflection. Results of the research showed that reading comprehension of 1A English department students at Politeknik Negeri Malang improved through the implementation think-pair-share technique using Know about Business module. Students’ reading scores mean improved from 56.8 to 75.7 and all students could pass the reading comprehension passing grade. Results from the questionnaires also illustrated that students showed interests and enthusiasm in doing reading activities using think-pair-share techniques with the use of Know about Business module.

Abstract

English is the most widespread and dominant business language and it has become compulsory for people to speak English if they wish to join a global workforce.A number of research show that business communication is most often conducted i English. Due to its skyrocketing use,a tendency for designing specialized courses which focus more on specific outcomes and industries is observed, especially for English department students. By addressing specific audiences and catering for specific needs,English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is the example of this category.This paper focuses on English for e-Tourism and the teaching strategies which are implemented in order to adjust the course to students’ needs. The emphasis is taken into consideration because the relationship between technology and tourism has become delicate and challenging.  Observations on this inseparable relationship assume a great importance when considering the varied world of tourism activities, where the strict dependence on technology for the efficient and effective management of information has caused a real revolution due to the diffusion of online applications. The most recent developments of the web and social networks have then further accentuated the influence of ICTs (Information and Communication Technologies) on the sector of education. Moreover, the important aspects of English for e-Tourism will be highlighted since the adoption of new technologies has reshaped the entire process of tourism service development as well as the entire tourism industry as a whole. Finally, reference will be made to the responsibilities that both teachers and students have in the ESP framework.

Abstract

 Globalization and massive development in communication and information technology generates multiculturalism in the last few years. It enables people live their originality consciously and without authorization of the other cultures. In other words, multiculturalism is a cultural wealth for living together. Furthermore, people who have different cultures consider that it is necessary to find a way to have proper intercultural communication especially when they live together. Multiculturalism is considered compulsory for social diversity including its appearance and recognition. Moving from this thought, interpretation, a social phenomenon between different languages and cultures has an undeniable function especially for community interpretating. The function of community interpreting and intercultural communication is multifaceted. The community interpreter has to know the languages, the cultures they belong to, their social structures, world understandings and value judgments. Multiculturalism needs social and cultural diversity. Therefore, a community interpreter has to apply every culture’s necessities equally besides the interpreting procedures. In multicultural societies formed by different cultures, community interpreting plays a pivotal role in order to live together peacefully towards common boundaries. Community interpreting has a mission on conciliation and adaptation of different cultures and values. Community interpreting helps social structures compromise in the sense of multiculturalism and recognize their cultural background. This study will examine the necessity of multiculturalism integration in the teaching of community interpreting which has become more important in recent days. This is intended for communities with diverse cultures to continue their harmonious coexistence and to maintain their presence in the content of multiculturalism.Keywords: community interpreting, integration, multiculturalism

Abstract

Students find it hard to speak English despite the fact that they have the basic knowledge of the language due to the lack of motivation and confidence. As the technology advances, teachers must be willing to take advantage of the potential channels provided by it. This study aims to improve students’ motivation and confidence to speak English through the use of Vlog in the YouTube Channel as well as to find out the element that affect the most to the improvement of the motivation and confidence. The data were obtained through classroom observations, questionnaires and interviews. In terms of findings, this study revealed that the use of vlog in the YouTube Channel improved students’ motivation and confidence. The data also suggested that students were most motivated and confident to speak English because they were given enough time to think of what they wanted to talk about and it was done in the place they found familiar. Therefore, teachers are suggested to bring technology into the classrooms more often and adjust it to the situation where students find it convenient to speak up.

Abstract

This study was conducted in English Grammar for Content and Creative Writing class. Project-based learning using Wattpad is implemented as a teaching model to improve students’ writing skills. They will accomplish two creative writing projects. This study aims to identify the implementation of project-based learning using Wattpad and students’ perceptions towards it. This research implemented a case study. The data were obtained from observation and questionnaires. Most students give positive attitudes toward the use of Wattpad and they liked to use Wattpad as a writing platform.

Abstract

Thesis writing is one compulsory subject which must be completed by students at State Polytechnic of Malang particularly in Accounting Department. Moreover, an abstract is an inseparable part of thesis which must be written by all students. The abstracts must be written both in Indonesian and English. Students have to translate their Indonesian abstract into English. From the preliminary study, it was found out that students have many difficulties in translating their thesis abstract from Indonesian into English. Hence, this research seeks to investigate what type of errors committed by the students during the process of English abstract writing. A descriptive qualitative design was used in this research. Documents in the form of 25 abstracts were used in the data analysis. The results showed that during the process of English abstract writing completion, students tend to have problems in abstract translation, grammar, vocabularies, sentence structures and writing mechanics. Detailed results were presented and discussed in the coming sections, followed by recommendations for further research. Keywords: abstract writing, translation, machine translation, Google Translate

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian dilaksanakan di Rumah Kinasih, Kecamatan Kesamben, Kabupaten Blitar. Pemilihan lokasi tersebut dikarenakan terdapat permasalahan yang dihadapi oleh Rumah Kinasih mempromosikan karya teman-teman disabilitas dan ODGJ Rumah Kinasih. Rumah Kinasih yang berperan sebagai mitra kegiatan pengabdian ini menghadapi permasalahan yaitu belum memiliki media promosi berbahasa Inggris. Hal tersebut menjadi hambatan bagi mitra untuk memasarkan produk dan karya Rumah Kinasih ke pasar internasional yang lebih luas lagi. Tujuan khusus yang ingin dicapai dari kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah untuk mempersiapkan mitra mampu membuat media promosi berbahasa Inggris di Rumah Kinasih, baik di situs web yang telah mereka miliki maupun di akun media sosial Rumah Kinasih. Metode yang akan dipakai untuk mewujudkan tujuan khusus tersebut adalah memberikan pelatihan pembuatan media promosi berbahasa Inggris di Rumah Kinasih dengan memanfaatkan teknologi informasi. Langkah-langkah kegiatan dilakukan terdiri dari 5 tahapan, meliputi: (1) analisis kebutuhan tentang pembuatan media promosi berbahasa Inggris di Rumah Kinasih, (2) pelatihan pembuatan media promosi berbahasa Inggris, (3) pemanfaatan teknologi sebagai sarana pendukung pembuatan media promosi berbahasa Inggris, (4) bimbingan teknis pembuatan media promosi berbahasa Inggris, dan (5) evaluasi kegiatan. Hasil dari kegiatan ini dapat meningkatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan mitra dalam menciptakan media promosi berbahasa Inggris dengan memanfaatkan kemajuan IPTEK.
