Abstract

We have processed biomass from palmyra sugar to produce allotrope carbon by heating process with the variation of calcination temperature. The formation of amorphous carbon (a-C) was confirmed from the XRD result heated at 400°C with the observation of the peak at the position of ~24o. By increasing the temperature at 700°C, the presence of two peaks at 24o and 43o were observed, indicating the formation of rGO-like phase. The functional groups detected by FTIR spectra consist of C=C, C-O, C=O, C-H and O-H. The result of conductivity measurement exhibits that the material can be classified as semiconducting materials.

Abstract

Solar Cell Research Group, which is under Advanced Materials Research Group, Department of Physics, Faculty of Science and Data Analytics, ITS Surabaya, with its competency and research, tries to be actively involved in contributing and providing alternative solutions to problems in society, especially regarding the problem of global warming and energy crisis. One of the concrete actions is through community education activities to increase understanding and awareness of the use of environmentally friendly photovoltaic technology on Gili Ketapang Island, Probolinggo. This island is one of the most populous small islands in Indonesia with the problem of ‘high-cost electricity from the state electricity company. The training materials provided for this activity include the Qur’an and Science, global warming, energy crisis, and renewable energy, and the use of photovoltaic energy technology. Thus, the understanding, awareness, and independence of the community of Gili Ketapang Island in the electricity sector can be improved by utilizing renewable energy sources, especially photovoltaic technology. In the long term, the role of various renewable energies in the future is expected to be more significant on this island by utilizing this abundant solar energy

Abstract

This report is briefly investigating the structural defect information of T’-Pr2-xCexCuO4 (T’-PCCO) nanocrystals with x = 0.13 at three different calcination temperatures. The as-synthesized powder of Pr2-xCexCuO4 (PCCO) nanocrystals with x = 0.13 were synthesized by using the chemically dissolved method within three different calcination temperatures, namely 900oC, 950oC, and 1000oC for 15 h in air. X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique is used to characterize the phase, structural, and crystalline defect information on the nanocrystal powder. It is found that all the indexed peaks are confirmed as PCCO phase with space group of I4/mmm and a minor impurity of Fm-3m space group. The lattice parameters are confirmed to be fluctuated signifying the stability of the Coulomb force at those temperatures. The post-Rietveld analysis using Bond Valance Sum (BVS) calculation shows the Ce-dependent of T’-PCCO nanocrystals while the Fourier difference suggests that the created crystalline defect as a part of the tetravalent doping effect which binds stronger apical oxygen. Moreover, at Pr- and Cu-site, the scattering distribution are fluctuating with the stable structure at 1000oC. This initial structural information is worth complementing the fundamental feature for understanding the T’-type cuprates.

Abstract

A large eruption of Mount Gamalama happened nearly 350 years ago has left the frozen lava rocks that are now spread in the form of black stone located in the North-East coast of the island of Ternate, called batu angus (Angus stone). This paper reports the basic analysis including the phase content, crystal structure and particle morphology of the frozen lava rock, Angus stone, briefly. Based on the XRD pattern, Angus stone contains up to 20% of magnetic phases. The analysis of XRF and XRD data reveals that there are dominantly non-magnetic phases (silicate phases) in the Angus stone with the combination of Si-Al-K-Ca-O elements. Elemental distribution map from SEM/EDX image shows that there is a clear separation between non-magnetic and magnetic phases in the crushed powders indicating the easiness to obtain both phases separately. This study proves that Angus stone has potential application as a base material for the preparation of magnetic and non-magnetic functional materials.

Abstract

Physical properties of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) prepared from two different raw materials, namely coconut shell (rGO-s) and graphite mineral (rGO-c, produced by Graphenea Inc.), have been investigated. While both samples have the same density of about 1.9 g/cm3, rGO-c has more porous of about 1.3 cc/g with diameter of 10.8 nm compared to rGO-s which has 0.2 cc/g porous with diameter of 2.4 nm. Specific surface area in rGO-c was also obtained much larger than that of rGO-s. rGO-c and rGO-s have specific surface area of ~298 m2/g and ~475 m2/g, respectively. Examinations on particle size and surface morphology show that rGO-c has homogenous particles which consist of transparent thin sheets, while rGO-s has rather heterogenous particles that look like dens stacked sheets. The presence of C and O was confirmed at the observed morphology. The difference in physical features were then found to influence the obtained electrical conductivity of the samples. rGO-c has higher conductivity than rGO-s. Estimation on gap energy (Eg) indicates that rGO-c and rGO-s have Eg in the range of semiconducting materials. The study provides a better understanding on physical properties of coconut shell-derived rGO to further revise synthesis method to improve quality of the obtained rGO.
