Abstract

AbstractThis article aims to examine the application of character education in Taman Seminary, the level of early childhood education. The research was conducted at five schools in the Java region in March – August 2019 using qualitative methods. The result shows that the school under the guidance of the Directorate General of Catholic Community Guidance has a positive impact on the growth and development of children's character. Children begin to be independent by eating alone, can make a cross, pray spontaneously before eating, and even children can remind their parents if they forget to pray before eating. This is evident from the recognition of the parents who see changes in the attitudes and behavior of religious, independent, disciplined, and caring. This research recommends that the Directorate General of Catholic Community Guidance make a grand design for the Taman Seminary school and conduct socialization to the public, specifically to the hierarchy of the Catholic Church, so that this policy has full support. In addition, substantial efforts and actions are needed to increase the competence of teaching staff and improve facilities and infrastructure, including class buildings.AbstrakArtikel ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji penerapan pendidikan karakter di Taman Seminari, jenjang pendidikan anak usia dini. Riset dilakukan pada lima sekolah di regio Jawa pada Maret – Agustus 2019 dengan menggunakan metode kualitatif. Temuannya adalah ternyata sekolah yang berada dalam binaan Ditjen Bimas Katolik ini berdampak positif terhadap pertumbuhan dan perkembangan karakter anak. Anak mulai mandiri dengan makan sendiri, dapat membuat tanda salib, berdoa spontan sebelum makan, bahkan anak dapat mengingatkan orang tuanya jika lupa berdoa sebelum makan. Hal ini terbukti dari pengakuan orang tua siswa yang melihat adanya perubahan sikap dan perilaku anak yang religius, mandiri, disiplin, peduli. Riset ini merekomendasikan agar Ditjen Bimas Katolik membuat grand design sekolah Taman Seminari dan melakukan sosialisasi kepada publik, secara khusus kepada hierarki Gereja Katolik sehingga kebijakan ini mendapat dukungan penuh. Selain itu diperlukan usaha dan tindakan konkret untuk peningkatan kompetensi tenaga pengajar dan perbaikan fasilitas sarana-prasarana termasuk  gedung kelas.

Abstract

Online learning policies serving as the answer to the world of education during the COVID-19 pandemic period raise some problems to students. They find it difficult to understand learning materials because the teacher's explanation is very limited, so many tasks and teachers cannot supervise the students. As a result, students are quickly getting bored with learning activities at home, they cannot directly meet their classmates; and this condition is getting worse due to the fact that their homes are less supportive to their learning activities. This research is aimed at studying the State Madrasah Tsanawiyah Students’ experiences during the Covid-19 pandemic era from March to July 2020. A descriptive qualitative analysis method was employed. The primary data were obtained from the results of observations and open questionnnaires sent to 42 the madrasah tsanawiyah students from Sidoarjo, Malang, Yogyakarta, Jakarta, Aceh, and Padang Panjang. The secondary data were taken from online news about the distance learning. It was found that the distance learning for madrasah tsanawiyah students was troublesome experiences due to inadequate facility and infrastructures in the internet quota, smart phones, laptops, and also unsupporting home environment and improper the teaching techniques. However, some students were happy with this distance learning because it may give them new experiences, learning with a laptop or a mobile phone is exciting, it may improve the literacy in technology, it is flexible in terms of time, and it is not necessary for them to go to schools. It is recommended that the government improve the quality of the internet services, give more internet assistance quota, and hold training for the teachers on online learning.

Abstract

This article discusses music in the Catholic liturgy in Jakarta, Indonesia in the postmodern era within the context of the autonomy of the Catholic Church. The Indonesian Catholic Church is an independent and autonomous church where liturgical music is a form of original artistic expression. However, in practice, the majority of Catholics in Indonesia view the liturgical celebration as uninteresting and dull. Conversely, pop music has increasingly influenced liturgical music. This reality is discussed and analyzed specifically in regards to liturgical music that experiences contextual data inference, especially in the specific cultural contexts of the community. The data analysis shows, in perception of Catholics in Jakarta, the role of liturgical music in worship is not homogeneous, but rather depends on the educational background, attention from Pastors of the Parish, cultural factors, and individual past experiences. For the most part, the level of understanding regarding the nature and important position of liturgical music in religious holy celebrations is low. Most consider that all music is the same and can therefore be used in the liturgy. Music is considered only a complement to enhance religious celebrations. In this context, the government and the Indonesian Catholic Church established the Catholic Church Choir Development Institute (LP3K) as a forum for fostering Catholics in Indonesia in the liturgical field and discussing issues related to music. This article confirms that the position of the liturgical music is crucial and has an irreplaceable significance in the liturgy, and the two are inextricably woven to each other.

Abstract

Cita-cita utama pemerintah menggunakan kurikulum K-13 adalah menciptakan generasi yang cerdas berpengatahuan, kompeten dan trampil. Studi ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan dan menganalisis keterampilan berpikir tingkat tinggi (HOTS) siswa madrasah tsanawiyah dalam pembelajaran matematika setelah diberlakukannya kurikulum K-13. Studi ini difokuskan pada TIMSS Assessment framework yang terdiri atas empat materi matematik yaitu bilangan, aljabar, geometri, data dan peluang. Dimensi kognitif yang diukur meliputi kemampuan penerapan dan penalaran. Data penelitian ini berasal dari studi literatur tentang penerapan kurikulum K-13 dan survey yang melibatkan sebanyak 1.317 siswa madrasah tsanawiyah dari tujuh kota di pulau Jawa. Sampel tersebut berasal dari 439 Madrasah Tsanawiyah DKI Jakarta, Bandung, Serang, Semarang, Yogyakarta, Malang dan Surabaya. Analisis inferensial untuk menguji perbedaan antar kelompok data menggunakan uji ANAVA satu jalur. Data dari survey dan studi literatur dianalisis melalui tahapan restatemen, deskripsi dan interpretasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan tingkat keterampilan HOTS matematis siswa madrasah tsanawiyah. Hal ini mengacu pada hasil uji empiris menggunakan ANAVA satu jalur yang menunjukan nilai signifikansi perbedaan kemampuan HOTS matematis sebesar 0,048 < 0,05. Nilai rata-rata tertinggi untuk aspek penerapan diperoleh siswa madrasah Tsanawiyah Yogyakarta. Sedangkan untuk aspek penalaran nilai rata-rata tertinggi siswa dari Surabaya. Dua kemampuan HOTS tersebut masih tergolong rendah.  Tulisan ini menyarankan perlunya penelitian lanjutan untuk melihat secara khusus penerapan kurikulum K-13 di madrasah untuk dimungkinkannya suatu analisis komparatif.

Abstract

One of the fundamental problems that undermine education during the pandemic Covid-19 is quality educational services that are accessible to all students. Quality education services relating to issues of ownership and control technology. The use of digital technology with accessibility, connectivity, and flexibility is often seen as a learning solution during a pandemic. This perception is mistaken when used for understanding reality. Educational services limitation and lack of understanding in learning application/platform is a problem that is still concerning for teachers, students, and parents. This has an impact on the formulation of problem-solving action plans that are faced during a pandemic. This paper aims to show the other side of those perceptions that can be perceived as an opportunity and also a challenge. The method used in this research is the qualitative method with a descriptive approach. The type of research is library research. The author collected relevant library data. Data was collected in form of both national and international journal articles reviewing education and the impact of a pandemic on the education system. Collected data were analyzed using restatement, description, and interpretation stages. The result of this research shows that learning difficulties tend to be caused by the lack of technology-based learning essence. This result also takes effect on mindset-changing attitude, paradigm, and viewpoint towards learning reality during Covid-19 pandemics. Finally, learning during the Covid-19 pandemic reflects two things: First, learning practices must be relevant, futuristic, responsive to the context of the times. Second, socio-cultural transformation becomes a precondition for a system change in the learning process so that education takes root and becomes a new tradition that applies in society and becomes best practices.With this understanding, not only pandemic reality can be contextually well-understood but also problem-solving actions can be formulated precisely.

Abstract

One of the major problems faced by countries around the globe during this pandemic is providing high-quality education services that can be accessed by all students. This learning difficulty that has become a symptom in various parts of the world has been seen only as a matter of ownership and mastery of technology. This understanding is incorrect and wrong in understanding reality. This has an impact on the formulation of action plans for solving problems during a pandemic. This paper aims to show the side of the challenge that can be interpreted as an opportunity. Distance learning during the COVID-19 pandemic is an essential shift in educational traditions. The data in this research was obtained from online surveys and in-depth interviews that involving students and teachers from various regions in Indonesia. Data from surveys and in-depth interviews were analyzed through the restatement, description, and interpretation stages. The results showed that learning difficulties were caused more by a lack of understanding of the essence of technology-based learning. This has an impact on the difficulty of changing the mindset, and perspective of the current learning reality. Most people still depend on and consider the traditional face-to-face learning method in the classroom as the only best strategy in the educational process compared to online systems. In other words, the existence of an educational paradigm transformation that aims to create student independence in education is still difficult to accept as a necessity. With this understanding, not only the reality of the pandemic can be understood more contextually, but also problem-solving efforts can be formulated with the right target. This paper suggests the need for further research to accommodate a larger sample and involving more representative informants to enable comparative analysis.

Abstract

This article explores the power of culture as an effort to promote a harmonious, tolerant and peaceful life between Muslims and Catholics. Likang telu is a cultural concept of the people of West Flores which is the basis for Muslims and Catholics to live in harmony, tolerance and peace. This study was conducted in Manggarai, West Flores, East Nusa Tenggara Province. The work aims to explore four elements including, 1) the differences in Muslim-Catholic relations after and before the reform era; 2) the extent to which the likang telu concept affects Muslim-Catholic relations in Manggarai; 3) the reasons for the likang telu concept being ignored by the Manggarai people and 4) the implications of the fading likang telu concept in Muslim-Catholic relations in Manggarai. The sugests that before the reform era, the Muslim and Catholic communities could live side by side in harmony and peace, while after the reform, the situation changed and conflicts were inevitable. It is apparently due to fading local wisdom, namely the likang telu concept of the Manggarai people which has 3 pillars: ase-kae (brother and sister), hae beo (fellow residents), and anak wina-anak rona (husband-giver and wife-giver). The trigger factors are the emergence of religious organizations both in the Catholic Church and in Islam; preferences of people’s knowledge sources that rely on the social media; and the unresolved trauma of the Muslim-Catholic relations in the past. The disregard for local wisdom has negative implications for Muslim-Catholic relations in Manggarai. This study recommends that all elements of the Manggarai community should revive and socialize likang telu as a local cultural treasure that had been proven in the past to be able to build a bridge of interfaith relations among different Manggarai communities.

Abstract

Every society has a role model, because folklore is always related to a particular society. This study aims to elaborate and actualize the religious values ​​that have been exemplified by St. Fransiskus Xavier in Maluku religious folklore. This study is based on qualitative research with a descriptive approach. Data collection techniques through observation, interviews, and documentation studies. The process of data analysis was carried out with data collection, data display, data reduction, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that the example of faith and personal qualities of St. Francis Xavier as a missionary who laid the foundations of Christianity in Maluku was very meaningful for the people of Maluku because it had changed their lives to know and believe in God. Therefore, this story is passed down from generation to generation so that it continues to be present in the public's memory. This folklore teaches the noble values ​​that have been exemplified by Francis, namely being religious, generous, simple, hardworking and faithful in faith. His life example gives a message that people who live close to God will be a blessing to others. Keywords: Religion, Fransiskus Xaverius, Missionary, Maluku.   Setiap masyarakat memiliki panutan/tokoh, karena cerita rakyat selalu berkaitan tentang masyarakat tertentu. Studi ini bertujuan mengelaborasi dan mengaktualisasikan nilai-nilai religius yang telah diteladankan oleh St. Fransiskus Xaverius dalam folklor religi Maluku. Studi ini didasarkan pada penelitian kualitatif dengan pendekatan deskriptif. Teknik pengumpulan data melalui observasi, wawancara, dan studi dokumentasi. Proses analisis data dilakukan dengan data collection, data display, data reduction, dan conclusion drawing. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa teladan iman dan kualitas pribadi St. Fransiskus Xaverius sebagai seorang misionaris peletak dasar kekristenan di Maluku sangat bermakna bagi masyarakat Maluku karena telah mengubah hidup mereka menjadi mengenal dan beriman kepada Allah. Oleh karena itu cerita ini diwariskan secara turun temurun sehingga terus hadir dalam ingatan publik. Folklor ini mengajarkan nilai-nilai luhur yang telah diteladankan oleh Fransiskus, yakni religius, murah hati, sederhana, kerja keras dan setia dalam iman. Teladan hidupnya memberi pesan bahwa orang yang hidup dekat dengan Tuhan, akan menjadi berkat bagi orang lain. Kata kunci: Religi, Fransiskus Xaverius, Misionaris, Maluku.

Abstract

Gemohing is a local culture of the Lamaholot people. Gemohing has had a significant impact on the attainment of the ideals of mainstreaming religious moderation in Indonesia. This study aimed at exploring the expression of gemohing as the foundation and pillar of religious moderation for the people of East Flores. This study is qualitative, built upon primary and secondary data. The primary data were collected from observations on community participation. While the materials were directly gathered from the gemohing practice and interviews with 23 cultural figures and residents of the gemohing tradition. Secondary data were obtained from relevant preceding studies and two documentary films about the practice of gemohing. Both types of data were analyzed qualitatively-interpretatively. This study was conducted from September 2019 to July 2022 in the Larantuka, Adonara, and Solor. This study found that the Lamaholot community demonstrated gemohing as the foundation and pillar of building a shared life. The gemohing praxis which is based on the Lamaholot philosophy is reflected in the principles of ina tou ama ehang and puin taan tou gahan taan ehan. These principles mean that all Lamaholot people come from one mother and father and therefore the spirit of unity must be upheld. They mandate that every citizen views each other as brothers that need to be appreciated and respected with a spirit of unity in the social order and as an individual as well. From this point of view, unity and oneness are highly emphasized aspects. This study represents a contribution to efforts to promote religious moderation.
