Abstract

This research is entitled Ideology of capitalism of popular literature in the novel Cinderella Man. The formulation of the problem is how the formula is contained in the novel Cinderella Man. The formula as a stereotype that is popular culture can be seen in the characters and settings. This study aims to describe and analyze the formula contained in the novel, also describes the ideology of capitalism. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative research method by using a textual approach by utilizing the formula theory introduced by Cawelti. The data source used in this study is the novel Cinderella Man by Marc Cerasini. Moreover, the results of this study indicate in this novel the storyline (functional analysis) is by what is stated in Cawelti's theory of formula in popular literature. This novel implies values toward humans including ideological values, and the value of coexistence among humans.

Abstract

This research studies about the correlation language and gender with the variety of woman’s language feature in the main character Rebecca Bloomwood in the Confession of Shopaholic movie. There are two objectives that become the purpose of this study; 1) To find the variety of woman’s language feature in the main character Rebecca Bloomwood in the Confession of Shopaholic movie and 2) To find the woman’s language correlate to gender in the main character in the Confession of Shopaholic movie. The theory used in this research is the Sociolinguistic approach by using the theory of Robin Lakoff about woman’s language features and women’s language correlate to gender. The methodology used in this study is qualitative research to explain the data, because the data are analyzed and described in the form of words and sentences. The data are taken from the conversations uttered by the main character as female character. The result of the research, the researcher finds ten variety of woman’s language such as precise color terms, avoiding using strong word, empty adjective, tag question, avoiding using strong word, lexical hedges, intensifier, emphatic stress, hypercorrect grammar, and super polite form. Regarding the reason by using the feature is most the feature of variety woman’s language has been found in the main character. Those features show woman’s correlations to gender that women tend to reflect uncertainty, and their lack of confidence in conversation. This research finds woman’s language is super polite than man, women’s talk more evaluative and emotional than man’s language.

Abstract

This research explores the analysis of the type of translation procedures and the degree of meaning equivalence used in translating cultural words in the novel Semua Anak Bangsa by Pramoedya Ananta Toer into Child of All Nations by Max Lane. The objectives of this research are first, to find the types of translation procedures are used by a translator to translate cultural words in the novel Child of All Nations and second, to identify how cultural word translation to achieve the degree of meaning equivalence. The theory used is the translation procedures by Newmark and meaning equivalence by Bell. The methodology used is qualitative research in which the researcher presents the issues descriptively. As for data, they were collected from the cultural words in the dialogue and narration in the novel. After going through the analysis, the researcher concludes eleven translation procedures are used by the translator in this translation. There are transference, naturalization, cultural equivalent, functional equivalent, descriptive equivalent, through-translation, shifts or transpositions, synonymy, compensation, couplets, and notes-additions-glosses. The commonly procedure is cultural equivalent. The degrees of meaning equivalence are fully equivalent, partly equivalent, and different meaning. The commonly degree of meaning equivalence is fully equivalent.

Abstract

This study aims to find the social belongingness as the need to the interpersonal feelings. There are two objectives in this research 1) to find out the social belongingness happen in the society 2) to describe how the social belonging as the need effect the interpersonal feelings in the novel Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. This research is based on Psychology of Humanistic theory by Abraham Maslow’s theory of hierarchy of needs. Based on the result of this research, the researcher found the emerge of social belongingness need effecting the interpersonal feelings in the novel Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell.

Abstract

This research explores how the maxim violation can portray personality of characters inthe novel The Three Button Trick and Other Stories by Nicola Barker. The researchobjectives are; to find out the types of maxim violations appear in the novel and to knowhow maxim violation can portray personality of the characters in the novel The ThreeButton Trick and Other Stories by Nicola Barker. The theories used in this research aremaxim violation introduced by Paul Grice as the main theory conducted to explain aboutthe maxim violation phenomena. Besides that, Personality Traits Theory as known as ‘ FiveFactor Theory’ by McCrae and Costa to depict the personality owned by the characterswho violate maxims in the novel The Three Button Trick and Other Stories by NicolaBarker. As the result of the research, the researcher found that maxim violation, behaviorsand personality are interchangeable and interconnected. At the time a speaker performsmaxim violation by which generate other interpretation of what it is said withincommunication, the utterance apparently portrays the speaker’s personality throughout themeaning, true intention and behavior it is conveyed.

Abstract

This research analyses how the patriarchy system acts as the trigger of sexual coercion as reflected in the novel Moxie by Jennifer Mathieu. The objectives of this research are 1) to determine the forms of sexual coercion in the novel Moxie, and 2) to determine how the patriarchy system triggers sexual coercion in the novel Moxie. The researcher used Alison M. Jaggar’s radical feminism theory as the main theory and Smuts's and Smuts’ theory of sexual coercion as the supporting theory in analyzing the collected data. Jaggar’s radical feminism theory is used to analyze how the patriarchy system triggers sexual coercion while Smuts and Smuts’ theory is used to analyze the forms of sexual coercion. The research methodology of this research is qualitative descriptive; in which the relevant data were collected from the text found in the novel Moxie. This research resulted in direct coercion such as sexual harassment, intimidation, and rape as the form of sexual coercion found in the novel Moxie. This research also resulted in patriarchal ideology and patriarchal stereotypes being the triggers of direct coercion in a patriarchal society.

Abstract

The focuses of this research are to find out the forms of taboo words in the novel Peepshow and to explain how the expression through taboo words revealed in the novel Peepshow. The theory used in this research is Batistella’s theory of taboo words and expression theory according to Ekman’s theory of expression. The methodology employed is descriptive qualitative research in which the researcher tried to present the issues descriptively. As for the data, they were collected from the excerpt of the novel’s quotation. The researcher finds that the forms of taboo words in the novel Peepshow is Obscenity divided into. The use of impolite words in Body excretion and the use of impolite words in sexual function, Vulgarity divided into. The use of the impolite words in body anatomy and the use of the impolite words in sexual function. Profanity in the use of impolite words in religious cursing, and. The epithet in the use of impolite words by people’s status. While the researcher founds the revealing expression through the taboo words consisted of sad, angry, fear, happy, surprise, and disgust expression through obscenity, vulgarity, profanity, and epithet expression.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the influence of social class on racial discrimination in themovie The Help. There are two objectives in this research. The first is to found the form ofsocial influence. The second the effect of racial discrimination. The theory used in thisresearch is Marxism by Karl Marx. The research uses the qualitative descriptive method inanalyzing the movie. The primary data in this research is the transcripts and scene of The Help Movie The researcher. finds the form of social class, they are proletariat and bourgeoisie. Social class differencescan affect discrimination between white and black people.

Abstract

A virtue is trait of mind and character that help people achieve a good life and sometimes a virtue can be found in the symbols. The symbols of the virtue can have an effect on a person’s maturity in thinking and acting. The theory used in this research is the semiotics approach by using theory of Charles Sanders Peirce about triangle theory, there are representamen or sign, object and interpretant. The methodology used in this study is descriptive qualitative research to explain the data, because the data are analyzed in the form of words and sentences. The data are taken from the sentences and the conversation in the text in The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. The result of this research is the researcher found the symbols of the virtue such as six of the character symbols and one the object symbols. The symbols are explained with the process of semiotic theory called triadic process, from this process the researcher can determines the maturity of the main character based on seven criteria of maturity.

Abstract

This research aims to find the types of speech acts and to explain how the effect toward behavior of main character in Real Steel movie. The researcher uses speech act theory by Austin and Searle to discuss the type and effect toward behavior of the main character in the movie. The method used in this research is qualitative method that explained descriptively. Qualitative research is a research conducted with the source of data that comes in form of writing and descriptive means that the researcher would describe the collected data descriptively throughout the thesis. The results found the types of speech acts namely locution, illocution, and perlocution. locution consists of five classifications, Illocution itself consists of five types, namely assertive, descriptive, commissive, expressive, and declaration. While perlocution itself consists of twelve types, but the researcher only found five types contained in the dialogue to convince the listener, scare the listener, to remind the listener, to make the listener do something, and to make the listener aware of something. As for the effect on behavior, the researcher concludes in two parts, namely whether includes in a positive effect or negative effect on the behavior of the speaker or speech partner.
