Abstract

It is widely known the focus of learning of English in Indonesia has always been centred on to how to gain the native speakers’ proficiency and learners’ successfulness in learning English is measured by how their speech production match those of the native speakers’. As international communication is no longer about the native speakers’ competence but the learners’ ability in switching and adjusting their Englishes to different speakers for different purposes, this may now be problematic and irrelevant. Using document analysis method, this paper examines the focus of teaching English in Indonesia during the past and recent curriculums. The finding shows that the curriculums focus on the fossilised forms rather than the communicative strategies and that they are not relevant to evaluate the international intelligibility as contrasted with their emphasis on gaining global participation. The paper therefore suggests the improvement in the curriculum and proposes to incorporate the communicative strategies in the evaluation.

Abstract

This study explored on how the transfer of Indonesian Address Terms (ATs) influenced the production of English ATs and in what ways Indonesian students accommodated the acquisition of the English ATs during the study abroad. This study focused on the five participants who were recruited through the purposive sampling. Designed to capture the participants’ experiences, this study employed a qualitative case study approach. The written discourse completion test and semi-structured interviews were employed to look at the pragmatic transfer and the acquisition of the address terms. The findings indicated that students’ home cultures of showing politeness by addressing people through contextual variables were challenged under the local cultures which view the equality and casual direct addressing as politeness. Participants were also found to show salient efforts to accommodate the English ATs in multifaceted ways. These efforts shed light to the teaching of English ATs in classroom. Implications to teaching English ATs in classroom in Indonesia are also discussed.

Abstract

Study abroad (SA) is a daunting process in which students who encounter cross-border face a whole new world. They go through positioning and being positioned by others. There is an on-going salient power asymmetry in their language use, which affects their desire to speak up and participate in the new community. This study aimed to scrutinize the ways Indonesian students negotiated their identities through their language use. Using open-ended questionnaires (OEQ)and semi-structured interviews, this study focused on 7 participants who were in the midst of the master’s degree program in England. The results indicated that the participants experienced the identities negotiation multifacetedly. Participants who exercised their agency and invested in their language use challenged the positioning attached to them. As a result, they constructed new identities and gained central participation in the local community. Meanwhile, participants who could not resist the power asymmetry withdrew and formed a more solid community with other international students. Lastly, some participants were also found to maintain their emotional security by not making any contact through their language use. Participants who resisted any contacts but with fellow home students interestingly developed an increased nationalism. Therefore, this article calls for the teachers’ attention and how to devise the English Language Teaching classroom better and program providers’ of how to provide the support for the SA students best.

Abstract

Indonesia has stipulated the implementation of the international program as one of its internationalisation's agendas. As a result, private and public universities strive to create international programs that would attract international students. This study focuses on an international program in a private university in Tangerang, which promotes English as a medium of instruction with little interference from native speakers. As many previous research have centred around study abroad in English speaking countries, this study offers a novelty of how identities are constructed in the context of English as a Lingua Franca where both local Indonesian and the international students are non-native speakers of English. Therefore, this research aims to discover how international students construct their language learning identity in English as a Lingua Franca context in Indonesia. There were eight participants from five different countries. They were interviewed using conversational narrative interview, and the data was analysed using narratives analysis. The findings were established in themes, and they indicated the positive identities constructions in many ways. These included reconstructing economic identity to religious identity, establishing Lingua Franca speakers identities, constructing global citizenship identities where all these constructions were supported by the acceptance and the zero pressure from the host. Therefore, it is concluded that zero power inequality promotes favourable language learning and identity construction during study abroad.

Abstract

Abstract

This study seeks to find out the English teachers' reflections and lessons learned in language teaching during the pandemic. The method used was a guided narrative frame in which the teachers from the suburban wrote down their feelings and lived experiences. The data was analysed using thematic analysis and presented in themes. The findings indicate that the teachers found it challenging at the beginning of their online teaching. Both the teachers and students faced problems including economic situations, tech problems and mental struggles. Interestingly, this finding is similar to the outskirt teachers and students' problems. Besides, the teachers have learned the most vital things during their language teaching in the early year of the pandemic. They continuously shift their teaching strategies, provide personalised feedback to support the students' engagement, and become adaptable teacher-learners. Suggestions are provided for both teachers and policymakers.

Abstract

Self-efficacy is a drive within students that affects their thinking, feeling, motivation, and learning activities to achieve what they need. It is said to be one of the predictors of academic success leading to its urgency put into research.   The study is classroom action research aiming to improve the nursing students' scores in Academic English class by raising the students’ self-efficacy through giving verbal persuasions. This action research was designed following Kemmis and McTaggarts’ model, including Planning, Action, Observation, and Reflection. 42 participants were also active students in the class of Academic English. After completing the sessions, the students were given pre-and posttest and asked to reflect on their achievements. The findings indicate that the average scores increased by 25 points between pre-and-posttest, 83.33% of participants had increased self-confidence, and 90.47% were satisfied with their test results. Further, the study shows score improvement through review, restudy, and re-try, pointing out the emergence of self-efficacy, which is not instant. It is a result of consistency and belief through the verbal persuasion given by the teacher.
