Abstract

Transformation in ship geometry and the development of alternative materials to replace wood will certainly have an impact on the weight of construction, these changes will certainly affect the center of gravity and ship draft, such as wooden ships with steel frames which are made by wooden ship craftsmen in Takalar Regency, after being replaced with steel frame, laden increases with an increase in the draft will affect the hydrostatic characteristics of the ship and the ship's center of gravity, the change, of course, has an impact on the stability of the ship, so an inclining test is needed, so that wooden ship craftsmen can understand the relationship between ship geometry and ship weight. Therefore, in an effort to increase the knowledge of wooden ship craftsmen, inclining test training is a solution and is proposed for community service activities with method of presenting material and practicing directly on ships, the results of this training craftsmen are able to understand the emphasis on steel-constructed wooden ships in relation to life safety at sea and skilled in inclining to test.

Abstract

The safety guarantee for passengers and goods on local inter-island shipping has been overlooked, particularly in the Sangkarrang island group, Makassar City. The following conditions can be seen: the loading process that neglected ship capacity, the position of passengers and goods, fewer safety equipment pieces, the poor state of the pier, and ship worthiness. The government has issued a regulation on traditional shipping safety to protect ship operation activities, such as the requirement of conventional passenger ships, which is regulated the Regulation of the Director-General of Sea Transportation Number HK.103 / 2/8 / DJPL-17 dated 18 April 2017. The program socialization is expected to give awareness of shipping safety for users and operators. This activity's output is the increasing awareness of the community, especially service users and owners of sea transportation fleets who live in the Sangkarrang archipelago, Makassar City. Through this service community program, there will be a higher awareness of the importance of shipping safety. Hence, the operators must prepare minimal safety equipment such as life jackets, buoys, and fire extinguishers on the ship. Besides, service users and ship owners can consider the risk of shipping circumstances.

Abstract

South Sulawesi is known as a place for wooden shipbuilding. The main problem faced by craftsmen is the shortage of wood. The solution, proposed the use of steel as the keel of the ship. In collaboration with the wooden boat craftsman group "Patorani" in Galesong District, Takalar Regency, an activity was held to transfer technology for making steel as a wooden ship keel. The main goal is that steel which is accepted as a wooden ship keel material, so that the shortage of wood can be substituted with steel. As a result, the belief that the wooden keel of the ship can be replaced with steel. Substitution of ship keel material with steel material based on the theory of structural strength. Activity’s outcomes are identifyed by the perceptions of the craftsmen and the views of the craftsmen. The results showed that before the activity, 90% of the crafters had heard of and were not sure that the ship's keel could be made of steel. After the socialization and demonstration activities, it turned out that only one out of 15 participants still doubted that ships were made of steel. The conclusion of this activity is that the craftsmen are ready to apply the innovative technology of replacing wooden keels with steel materials.

Abstract

As the main material, wood is required in the process of wooden ships building. The required wood must be water resistant especially for the construction of the ship wooden plank as well as wood in intact form for use on the keel of the ship to support the ship frames. It is increasingly difficult to obtain the required wood for the keel construction need since the requirements for the integrity of the keel construction which must continue throughout the ship. This condition threatens the sustainability of the wooden ship construction process in Indonesia. Hence, material alternative is urgently required for wood substitution for the ship keel. A study has been conducted with a recommendation of a steel keel (dimensions and shape of the keel) as a substitute for a wooden keel for certain ship dimensions. Socialization of this new technology needs to be done to wooden ship craftsmen in South Sulawesi in particular. The partners chosen in this activity were the member of the wooden boat craftsman group "Torani" in Galesong Kota District, Takalar Regency. The aim is to introduce steel material as a substitute for wood material in the wooden ship keel construction to overcome the difficulty of obtaining wood for the ship keel construction. The result shows that the majority of participants claim to have new knowledge and believe that it is possible to apply the technology to wooden ship construction. However, since the manufacture and installation of steel keels on wooden ships uses steel materials, the application of this technology will take a relatively longer time.

Abstract

The ship's resistance is important to know because correlates strongly to the power engine needs to reach the desired speed. One method can be applied on a small ship with full-scale free running within a ways pull small ship with other small ship for measure resistance value occurrence with scale equipment on the place between the ropes of the ship being towed and tugged. This method is very easy to apply to small ships. In general, manufacturers of traditional small ships do not carry out the full-scale test because they do not know the principles for determining engine power.
