Abstract

Laminated boards made from bamboo betung (Dendrocalamus asper) with the influence of different sizes and the presence of node sortimen. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of laminated bamboo betung, evaluating the effect of nodes and size sortimen the physical and mechanical properties of laminated bamboo board betung and determine the best size and the existence of the book sortimen bamboo as laminate raw material. Testing the water content, water absorption, delamination and bending strength is based JAS standard SE-7 2003 on Flooring surfaces while bonding strength testing is done based on ISO standard ISO 16981-2012.  The results show the quality of bamboo betung laminate board meets the standards JAS-7-2003 SE for testing moisture content, delamination, but for testing water absorption does not fulfilling. On the mechanical properties of bamboo betung laminated board meets the standards JAS-7-2003 SE for testing bending strength and meets ISO 16981-2012 standards for surface bonding strength testing. The best treatment for laminated boards are laminated boards without involving nodes with a size of 20 cm sortimen.Keyword : Dendrocalamus asper, node, sortimen size, laminated board

Abstract

Banana stem is one of alternative materials for particleboard manufacturing. Utilization of banana stems for particleboard can reduce the wood demand for industrial particleboard. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of resin level PF to physical and mechanical properties particleboard made from banana stems and to determine of the optimum resin level from particleboard. Varied concentration of PF resin as binder consist of  8%, 10%, 12%, 14%, and 16%. Size thickness and density target of particleboard were 25 x 25 cm2 x 1 cm and 0,70 gr/cm3 respectively. The result showed that, over all for physical properties density and moisture content had fulfill JIS A 5908 (2003). Banana stem particleboards had low dimensional stability. Trend of water absorption and thickness swelling showed that the increasing of resin level resulted of decreasing water absorption and thickness swelling parameter. For mechanical properties, MOE and IB for resin level 16% had fulfill standard. In generally, the high resin level caused improvement mechanical properties of particleboard.Keywords: banana stems, phenol formaldehyde, mechanical and physical properties, particleboard

Abstract

This research aimed to determine the type and price of commercial timber traded in Karo district. This research investigated the secondary wood industry usually called “panglong” as an object as well as the source of information. This research was conducted by the observation to secondary wood industry in 17 districts of Karo. Data  include the type, size, and price of wood, then data was tabulated. Then, the economic analysis for secondary industry wood was performed. The analysis results of 17 from  industry  surveyed in Karo district showed that the type of wood being traded were dominated by any kind of hard wood with percentage of 100%, pine (Pinus merkusii) of 88.23%, any hard woods of 76.47%, and meranti (Shorea sp) and dammar (Shorea macroptera) of 23.52%. Pine has the cheapest price among the commercial timber species that are traded others. Traded timber prices ranging from Rp. 10000 to Rp 11000 per inch. The greater secondary wood sawmill is UD. Surbakti with 25 employees and the BEP value of door frame production are Rp. 572625/ product, window sills Rp. 574875/product, while the smallest is UD. Mual Nauli with 2 employees and BEP value of window sills are Rp 250000 / product and ventilation Rp 62500 / product.Keywords: Secondary Wood Industry, Panglong, Economic Analysis.

Abstract

The combination of oil palm trunk waste and mahogany’s can increase the quality of particle board. The purpose of these study were to evaluated the effect of variations of phenol formaldehyde adhesive content and to determine the most valuable adhesives content towards the quality of particle board made from waste of oil palm trunk and mahogany’s. The treatment variation were variations of PF adhesives content  were 8%, 10%, 12%, 14%, and 16%. Particle board made with size 25 cm x 25 cm x 1 cm with target density of 0,7 gr/cm3, pressure in 30 kg/cm2, and temperature in 170°C in 10 minutes. The experimental result were compared with SNI 03-2105-2006. The statistical analysis used a single completely random experimental with 3 replication. The result showed that density value was 0.49-0.56 g/mc3, moisture content was 3.52-4.25%, water absorption in immersion for 2 hours was 67.35-117.33%, and 24 hours was 75.74-132.22%, thickness swelling on immersion for 2 hours was 8.61-33.79%, and 24 hours was 10.91-35.37%, IB values was 0.44-1.36 kg/cm2, MOE values was 7090-15529 kg/cm2, and MOR values was 75.17-169.82 kg/cm2. Variations of PF adhesive give the effect of physical and mechanical properties significantly except moisture content. The physical properties in this experiment were density, moisture content, thickness swelling on immersion for 2 hours with adhesives content were 14% and 16%, also for 24 hours with adhesive content was 16%, had been fulfilling the standard. All of IB and MOE value didn’t fulfill the standard, but the value of MOR only  in 8% adhesive content didn’t fulfill the standard. Abstract

Efforts to improve particle board quality was made from oil palm trunks waste and mahogany by coating the surface of the particle board using lath of talang bamboo. The purpose of this research to evaluate physical and mechanical properties of particle board that made from oil palm trunks and mahogany combination by lath of talang bamboo coating variation and to determined strength wood class from coating variation by lath of talang bamboo when optimal utilization. Treatment variations were without coating; face coating with the inside lath of bamboo, and face coating with the outside lath of bamboo; face and back coatings with inside and outside lath of bamboo. Thick coating from inside and outside lath of bamboo was 0.1-0.2 mm. Particle board size was 25 cm x 25 cm x 1 cm, density target was 0.7 gram/cm3, pressure was 30 kgf/cm2 and temperature was 170 oC for 10 minutes. The result of research will be compared with SNI 03-2105-2006 and PKKI-ni-5 in 1961. Statistic analysis used single completely randomized design with three repetitions. The result of these research showed that density value, moisture content, water absorption on 2 hours and 24 hours submersion, thickness swelling on 2 hours and 24 hours submersion, MOE value, MOR value, and IB value were 0.56-0.68 gram/cm3, 3.29-4.42%, 40.09-78.50% and 53.04-87.15%, 9.04-19.17% and 11.88-24.68%, 9,975.76-72,900.41 kg/cm2, 81.64-578.70 kg/cm2, and 0.91-2.59 kg/cm2, respectively. Coating variation by lath of talang bamboo were significantly affected on all of physical and mechanical particle board quality. The best treatment was on face and back coating variation that each used inside and outside lath of talang bamboo which had fulfilled all of the physical and mechanical SNI 03-2105-2006 and included into III of strength wood class according to PKKI-ni-5 in 1961.Key words: talang bamboo, oil palm trunks, mahogany, particle board, physical and mechanical properties

Abstract

Banana trunk is agricultural waste which is potentially as one of the solutions to be used as a material utilization berlignoselulosa products such as plastic boards. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of the composition of the plastic PP and banana stem particles to quality plastic board and determine the best composition for the physical and mechanical properties of plastic boards. Making plastic boards using a variation of the composition of polypropylene plastic (PP) and banana stem particles are 50:50, 60:40, 70:30 and 80:20. Mixing materials is done by using an extruder machine and compression board sheets using hot compressed at a temperature of 170 0C pressure of 25 kgf/cm2 for 10 minutes. The sample size of 25 cm x 25 cm x 1 cm3 with a target density of 0.7 g/cm3. Data analysis was carried out using a completely randomized design (CRD) with three replications.   The results of this study compared with SNI 03-2105-2006. The density value of from 0.52 to 0.73 g/cm3, 1.67 to 4.32% moisture content, water absorption in immersion 2 hours from 1.88 to 11.41%, and 24 hours immersion 5.38 to 28,48%, thickness swelling at 2 hours of immersion from 0.21 to 0.41%, and 24 hours from 0.43 to 0.69%, MOE 2710-6170 kgf/cm2, MOR 50.72 to  128.49 kgf/cm2, IB 1.11 to 2.94 kgf/cm2. Variations in the composition of the plastic polypropylene (PP) and banana stem particles affect the physical and mechanical properties of plastic boards. Treatment on the composition of 70:30 is the best treatment for physical and mechanical properties of plastic boards.Keywords: banana stems, plastic polypropylene, physical and mechanical properties, wood polymer composite

Abstract

The community service program for the mandatory lecturer scheme in 2021, Universitas Sumatera Utara, is foc Integrasi Agroforestri dan Sistem Budidaya Lebah Madu (Trigona Sp.) dalam Penguatan Food Estate di Humbang Hasundutan.  used at the food estate location, Humbang Hasundutan Regency. The purpose of this community service program is to develop a group of forest communities around the location of the food estate that are economically independent through the skills of honey bee cultivation of Trigona sp. in strengthening food at food estate locations. This program integrates forestry, agricultural, and honey bees Trigona sp. to form an interrelated cultivation system for the sustainability of ecological, economic, and social aspects. This program is carried out in the form of assistance in providing honey bee sires Trigona sp. and training in honey bee cultivation management. This program is expected to be able to have a positive impact on the community of food estate farmer groups as a companion business in managing food estates based on agricultural commodities.
