Abstract

This study concerned with teacher talk in online classroom. The interaction between teacher and students are analyzed into types of teacher talk. The aim of this study is to find it types of teacher talk to support students’ activeness in online classroom. Descriptive qualitative design was used as research methodology. The researcher was as nonparticipant observer in online class. There were two teachers involved as research participants. The participants conducted online class by using Zoom Application. Video recording from Zoom was analyzed by applying three steps, which consisted of reading or memoing data, describing data, and classifying data. In analyzing the data, the researcher referred to types of teacher talk by Brown who classified teacher talk into seven types. The research findings found there were five types of teacher talk in online classroom. Those are praising and encouraging, accepting ideas of students, asking questions, lecturing, and giving direction. These types found are used to support the students’ activeness in online classroom. Therefore, active and passive students are related to teacher talk. This study is implied to be used as reference to be applied by the teachers to keep the students active in online classroom.

Abstract

This research aimed to explain the improved of the students’ reading comprehension in terms of literal comprehension dealing with main idea and details and summarizing dealing with content and logical order. A classroom action research which was conducted in two cycles in which every cycle consisted of four meetings. The location of this research was taken at X students of SMA Gunung Sari Makassar with a number of the subject were 20 students. The research findings indicate that the application of Three Minute Pause strategy was significant in improving the students’ reading comprehension in terms of literal comprehension and summarizing. It was proved by the mean score of the cycle I was 6.88then increased to be 7.87 in cycle II. They were higher than the mean score of diagnostic test namely 4.77. It means that there was the improved of the students’ reading comprehension in terms of literal comprehension dealing with main idea and details and summarizing dealing with content and logical order.Keywords: literal comprehension; action research; strategy; content; logical order

Abstract

The background of this research is that the use of the small group discussion method is more effective than the preaching method in teaching reading comprehension. understanding because they can read more comprehensively with their friends in small groups and then discuss the information they have read. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of student learning outcomes by using small group discussions in learning reading comprehension. This study uses a quantitative method by giving tests, namely pre-test and post-test to twenty eighth grade students at SMP Muhammadiyah Camba. This research applied a pre-experimental design. The test given to students is in the form of multiple-choice in the form of narrative text reading. The results of this study indicate that the experiment conducted by the researcher on students affects learning outcomes by Using Small Group Discussions in teaching reading comprehension. The average value in the pre-tests is 49.25 while the post-tests have an average value of 82.75. It was provided in the value of the t-test (8.152) which was greater than the value of the t-table (2.093). It indicated that there were significant differences, this is also indicated H1 was accepted and H0 was rejected.

Abstract

This research was studied the effects of poster on students writing of descriptive text using the Direct Instruction Model at the second grade of SMPN 1 Makassar for the 2020/2021 academic year which focused on the use of subject or idol posters. This helps students to understand the material easier and presents an interesting way of the learning process. A pre-experimental research was used with pre-test and post-test in one class by writing text in a paragraphs which took approximately two months period for collecting the data. The research subjects were the eight-grade of student in the C-Class which consisted of nineteen students who took online classes. In this research, the researcher used purposive sampling technique for selecting a sample. The results of this study indicate an enhancement in students writing descriptive text. This is evidenced by the students mean score in the pre-test (45.84) which was lower than the post-test score (82.26). The t-test value was higher than the t-table value (11,880> 1,734). This means that there was a significant difference between the use of posters through the Direct Instruction Model in writing descriptive text which focused on the use of subject or idol poster. Therefore, H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted. Hence, it can be concluded that the poster could enhance students ability in writing descriptive text by using direct instruction model at the second grade of junior high school.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the correlation between students' reading habits in English and vocabulary achievement at the second grade (IPA) of SMA Unismuh Makassar. In this study, using the correlation description method, which consists of two instruments in collecting data, namely questionnaires and tests. This research was conducted in a class at SMA Unismuh Makassar where the sample chosen by the researcher was class two science consisting of 27 students in one class. The results in this study indicate that variable X to variable Y has a correlation with the degree of the correlation, namely a weak correlation in the form of a negative correlation. The negative correlation is the higher the variable X, the lower the Y variable and vice versa. The data analysis calculation of r is the lower r-table (-0.287 <0.3809). This means that there is no significant correlation between students' reading habits in English and vocabulary achievement. In other words, hypothesis H0 is accepted and hypothesis H1 is rejected.

Abstract

This thesis study aimed at (1) To find out the students' mistakes from English noun phrases using pre modifiers in writing English texts made by eleventh grade students? (2) To find out students' mistakes from English noun phrases using the post modifier in writing English texts made by eleventh grade students? The research design a descriptive quantitative method, in which it used writing test. The result of the data that the researcher got the most types of error in noun phrase using pre-modifier and post-modifier in disordering made by the students in using noun phrase. The result of the analysis indicated that there are two part the student made error for the first is using pre-modifier in determiner is 66 errors or 66%, in adjective 9 errors or 9%, in Quantifier 1 error or 1%. The second is using post-modifier in adjective, 14 errors or 14%, in To-Infinitive 1 error or 1% and the last is prepositional phrase with 10 errors or 10%. This mean that there was high level error in noun phrase using pre-modifier and post-modifier at Madrasah Aliyah Bontomarannu. Keywords: Error analysis, Noun Phrase, Writing skills.

Abstract

The objective of the research to find out Pedagogic and Professional of English teachers at junior high school in Bulukumba. This research is quantitative descriptive. Technique of collecting data use questionnaire. Population is 70 Junior High School with 128 English teachers, technique sampling is Proportionate stratified random sampling. Data analysis technique is descriptive data analysis quantitative that is shown in percentage.The research result shown that Pedagogic and Professional competence of English teachers at junior high school in Bulukumba in Category “ Very high Competence “ from seventeen respondents around 94%, and category “ High Competence” from one respondent around 6%.“It can be conclude that Pedagogical and professional competence of English teacher at Junior high school in Bulukumba in Category “ Very High Competence”. The result is English teachers at junior high school in Bulukumba competence both Pedagogic and professional.

Abstract

The aims of this research were: (1) to find out the content of English Materials need by students of Economic Department Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar (2) to investigate the reason why students need English materials. This study used descriptive quantitative method. Total Respondents of this research were 37 students of the second semester of Islamic Economic Study Program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar.. The results of this study showed that: first, in the listening Materials, the highest content that students needs is about listen the customer who wants to create an account at Shariah Bank, in the speaking skill, the highest content that students needs is about how to explain to the customer the information in creating an account at Shariah Bank, in the reading materials, the highest content that students’ need is about reading brochure from Islamic bank. And in the writing skill, the highest content that students’ need is materials in the form of reply to letters, emails, and fax from other Islamic Banks, second, There are some reasons why the English materials are needed by Islamic Economic student. first, English materials is important for their future job or career. Second reason is English is international language. The third reason is to be able to communicate orally and written, and the other students said to be able to communicate with tourism.

Abstract

This research aims at developing instructional material for English grammar through Moodle at UNISMUH Makassar. it tries to develop the material by identifying students’ need in learning grammar, to describe instructional material of English grammar through Moodle. This research and development (R&D) is conducted by adapting ASSURE models which consist of Analyze, State Objective, Select, Utilize, Require, and Evaluation.The data were gained through questionnaire, the questionnaire is employed to do need analysis to get students’ need in instructional material, and to describe instructional material.meanwhile, questionnaire for validator to conduct development evaluation. Finally, the product of the study is Instructional material of teaching grammar through Moodle

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the pre-questioning technique was effective in increasing students' understanding in reading recount text or not, and to find out how students' perceptions of the pre-questioning and answering technique applied by the teacher to their understanding of reading recount text.  This study uses quantitative methods. This study used a pre-experimental design in which the pre-test, treatment, and post-test were carried out in class. The pre-test was conducted to determine the students' prior knowledge, while in the treatment process the students were taught recount text using the pre-question technique to improve their reading comprehension. Then a post-test was distributed to determine the progress or reading ability of students, this test was given after students were given treatment for four meetings through the pre-question technique. The findings showed that the application of pre-questions was effective in improving students' reading achievement, especially in reading recount texts, this was indicated by the students' post-test scores which were better than the pre-test, both on multiple choice questions and essay questions. In addition, student learning achievement has been shown to increase significantly. This is indicated by the pre-test and post-test interval scores. Students can also find the main idea and supporting details in the text.
