Abstract

The aim of this study is to explore pre-service English teachers’ experience in facing challenges and their coping strategies in managing synchronous virtual classrooms during practicum. This study employed narrative inquiry as its research design with thematic analysis for analyzing the data collected through semi-structured interviews with three pre-service English teachers. The study found that the pre-service English teachers encountered several problems in managing synchronous virtual classrooms, such as 1) students’ negative attitude; 2) insufficient instruction time; 3) lack of relationship or connection between teacher and students; 4) lack of proper feedback from mentor teacher and supervisor. Despite of several challenges mentioned above, the pre-service teachers had some strategies to deal with them, as follows 1) seeking emotional support from peers; 2) actively communicating with expert teachers; 3) solving problems through networking; 4) improving their strategies and skill. In summary, even though the pre-service English teachers faced several challenges, they could manage to overcome such challenges by identifying their needs and available access to improve their classroom situation. Keywords:  Challenges, Coping Strategies, Teaching Practicum, Virtual Classroom Management

Abstract

This study aimed to explore the students’ engagement in implementing the stage of peer feedback in learning recount text writing skill and the students’ perception toward the peer feedback strategy in learning recount text writing skill. This study was collected using qualitative approach which provided descriptive explanation. The subject of this study were four junior high school students. Since these days COVID-19 was still happening, this research didn’t carried out in school instead of through Zoom Meeting for the first meeting and the second meeting at researcher’s place within the health protocols. The instruments of this study were field note and questionnaire. Moreover, the result found that the students engagement in implementing each stage of peer feedback strategy were very good. Furthermore, the students perception toward peer feedback strategy were as follow, (1) peer feedback technique helped them in learning writing recount texts, (2) peers' comments and suggestions had an impact for them to be better in writing recount text, (3) having problems while checking their peers’ works since they were lack of grammatical and limit in vocabullaries. Keywords:  Peer feedback, Writing Recount Text, Students’ Engagement, Students’ Perception

Abstract

This narrative study aims to explore the students' motivational experience of two English education students in Indonesia during the COVID-19 pandemic. The research was conducted by using a qualitative approach and narrative inquiry method. The research participants were two students second and fourth semester at the university of Singaperbangsa Karawang. To collect the data, researchers used were interviews. Drawing on semi-structured interview data, we found the prevalence of online courses affected students' emotions and motivation. Both participants experienced emotions and motivation facing the online courses. The study stresses the students’ experience, emotional experiences during online class, and factors that motivated learning. Keywords:  Online learning, English Learning, Students’ Experiences

Abstract

Students' English speaking ability is one of the important skills for EFL students to master. In mastering these speaking skills, students are given innovative and creative learning methods in the classroom so that learning objectives are achieved. The learning method for speaking English that will be taught in this study is the Pecha Kucha presentation method. This article will discuss how the students experience while learning English speaking in the classroom by the teacher using a learning method with a presentation format called Pecha Kucha. In addition, the obstacles experienced by students while learning to speak English in the classroom will also be discussed in this study. Through narrative inquiry research, students' experiences will be told in depth so that research questions are reached. The important result of this research shows that students have several obstacles in speaking English in class such as fear of making mistakes, lack of vocabulary to nervousness. Students also have a positive response to the use of Pecha Kucha as a learning method in their English speaking class. Students also stated that they prefer the Pecha Kucha presentation format which focuses on the presenter rather than just reading the presentation slides as in the old presentation format. The interpretation of the results for this study will be more in-depth, complemented by student voices through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Keywords:  EFL Students, Speaking English, Experience, Pecha Kucha Presentation

Abstract

The increasing of technology bring great impact to humans’ life, including education. Learning English is very important this day, to be able fluent in English students need to learn vocabulary. Students face difficulty when they memorizing and defining vocabulary because there is a huge number of vocabulary, and the process of learning is boring. Mobile games can help students to learn vocabulary more interestingly. This study aims to investigate students' perspectives about learning vocabulary using a mobile game. The method used thematic data analysis from Braun & Clark. As a result student’ has positive preception and expereience about learning media to learn English vocabulary, the challenges that students face, when they learn using a mobile game, is the distraction of social media. Keywords:  Mobile Games, Vocabulary Learning

Abstract

The focus of this research was to explore the students' perceptions about using the Cake English Apps to improve their speaking abilities. This study involved 14 students from class XI at SMK Giri Taruna Bogor. The qualitative descriptive method was used by the researchers in this study. Information was collected using questionnaires and interviews. The majority of the students, according to the research's findings, said that Cake English Apps gave more opportunities to practice their speaking abilities; they are interested in enhancing their speaking skills with the Cake English Apps, they can use the Cake English Apps to practice speaking as much as they like, and they like to choose the speaking-related content to practice their speaking skills. Four students walk in to be interviewed about using the Cake English Apps to improve their speaking skills; the majority of them are familiar with several of the features of the Cake Apps and understand how to use them. Finally, they will recommend the app to other students to help them improve their speaking skills. Keywords:  Cake English Apps, Speaking Ability, Perception

Abstract

Listening plays an important role in completing the other four skills in language class. Listening skills should need more attention because they have quite serious problems that are being experienced by students. In learning listening, students still find it difficult to master this skill naturally. One of the difficulties of students in performing listening skills is due to limited vocabulary so that they are unable to conclude the message conveyed by native speakers. The limitation of vocabulary is the main problem of many factors causing failure in listening class. In the process of activities in the listening class, they often fail to recognize the words that are heard and when that happens, they will stop to think about the word, resulting in falling behind from the next recording, eventually their focus will be destroyed. So, the research aims to prove how successful students are in capturing words with the shadowing technique, so that it can be said that the shadowing technique is a solution for both teachers and students in the listening class. This type of research is classroom action research called CAR consist four main parts of classroom action research such as planning, action, observation, and reflection.  The research subjects were 27 students. The methods used to collect data are observation and test. The results of the study were the average value from 73.2 to 77.0 in cycle I to cycle II. The percentage of students on the average score that has been obtained proves to have increased from 59% to 78%. Keywords:  Shadowing Technique, Listening Skill, Teaching, and Learning

Abstract

The aims of this study was to find out students’ responses regarding the implementation of extensive reading activity through Wattpad application. This study used qualitative research and a case study as research design. The site of the study was one of the senior high school in Karawang, West Java. The articipants was one class of eleven grades consisted of 46 students and six of them were chosen as representatives for interview. The data were collected by observation and semi-structured interview. The data were analyzed using qualitative data analysis by Miles, Huberman & Saldana (2014). Three major findings were found as follows:  (1) Extensive reading using Wattpad increase students’ motivation to read, (2) Wattpad is an effective media in reading activity, (3) Students' challenges in extensive reading activity through Wattpad. Keywords:  Students’ Experiences; Extensive Reading; Wattpad Application
