Abstract

In response to the current situation of the pandemic covid-19 outbreak which has been affected worldwide, this study examines the opt on online learning for writing skill, and to assess the development of the writing task. It draws the data from an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) student’s writing documents, and marking documents of three experienced English teachers’s using the “Analytical Marking Scheme”. A qualitative approach was employed where the data was obtained during the online supervision of the student’s final project (TA) by integrating visual images into her writing project. The participant is in her final year at English Department, Politeknik Negeri Padang who focuses on writing brochure as her TA. The findings of this study show that there are two major progresses found in the writing documents of the first draft to the final draft. First, the content of the writing has been improved as seen from the variation of vocabulary used within. The essay has been organized well where the ideas are developed, and the information shared is logical and complete. Second, even though there is still a few errors occured in grammar, punctuation, and spelling, they have no influence on the idea conveyed. The student is able to adjust into the online learning, and increase her writing performance by utilizing the visual images given. The findings suggest that there should be more innovative learning designs to accommodate the needs of online learning. Since this type of learning is challenging for both teachers and student, teachers need to be able to put their role as facilitator to establish more engagements with the student, and to trigger the student to be more autonomous in learning.

Abstract

Teaching a language whether English for Foreign Language (EFL) or English as a Second Language (ESL) always focuses on the four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing and should have applied into a well-balanced implementation to each. Highlighted by Nunan (1998) that over 50 % of the time spent by the students is for listening in learning a foreign language therefore it plays significant role in language development. The complexity occurs when the teaching-learning process is lack of adequate attention on improving their listening skill rather than testing their comprehension. Therefore by applying principles of ‘Meaning, Interesting, New Language, Understanding, and Stress-free (MINUS)’ might assist the teachers to come up with sufficient techniques to make the students can easily engage and obtain language items. Opportunities are discussed which may lead to a more productive learning time in listening by providing attractive variation of teaching. The desired outcomes for both principles and points of approach can accommodate teachers to develop their students listening skill as has been set in their lesson plan.

A mixed method approach was implemented where the data for the quantitative study was collected from the comparison of Vocabulary Size Test (VST) Monolingual-Version A which were carried out prior to and after the PBL. Moreover, the qualitative data was obtained from semi close-ended questionnaire, and open-structured interview. The result shows the superiority of using the mobile apps through this project-based process and at the same time the apps provide contextualized problem-solving environment to their users. Abstract

This research is a quantitative study which aims to enhance the speaking fluency of English Department’ students, State Polytechnic of Padang (PNP) through vocabulary deliberate learning. It was established by implementing linked word’s game as one of ways to enrich the student’s vocabulary size. The data was taken from the fresh year students  who took Speaking 1 subject.  It consisted of 2 intact classes; 1A with 26 students, and 1B with 27 students. The 1A class was set as experimental group, on another hand 1B class was set as control group. The analysis compared by the score perceived on their Pre-Test by using the Vocabulary Size Test (VST) designed by Paul Nation to thescore on their Post-Test right after the treatment. The data were analyzed by using T-test for independent sample test in comparing between experiment group and control group. The result of this research displayed that  control class showed that t(24) = -.834, p = .413. So, it can be concluded that no significant change in post test score compared with pre test score in control class because p>0,05. Meanwhile in experimental  group t(22) = -1.937, p = 0.066. P value in experimental group closed to 0.05 which means that there was significance change from 27.13 (pre-test score) into 32.35 (post-test score). Shortly, this game influenced the enrichment of the students vocabulary size.
