Abstract

Introduction:  Two variants have been described in the literature: a simple oral ranula and the deep diving or plunging ranula. Plunging ranulas arise when a simple ranula extends beyond the floor of the mouth into the neck. A plunging or diving ranula is a rare mucous fluid collection in the submandibular or parapharyngeal space resulting from damage or rupture of one or more ducts of the sublingual gland. An accurate diagnosis and an appropriate treatment plan are fundamental for a successful treatment of ranulas. Regardless of the surgical technique, conservative maneuvers associated with careful clinical monitoring were indispensable for the longevity and success of treatment. Objective: Excision of sublingual and submandibular gland be an option for this case with extraoral approach. Case: A 10-year-old girl presented with a chief complaint of a large swelling of the right submandibular, which had recurred after marsupialization. The clinical diagnosis was plunging ranula. Histopathological examination revealed heterotropia salivary gland with reactive follicular hyperplasia. Result: Histopathology examination reported as heterotopia salivary gland and reactive follicular hyperplasia can be parallel with pathophysiology of this case. The obstruction of salivary gland this patient association with anatomy anomalies or ectopic of the salivary gland. Evaluation post surgery shows no dysfunction of lingual and facial nerve. The treatment was successful with no recurrence was reported. Conclusion: This paper highlights a case report of recurrent plunging ranula was treated with extraoral approach be the method of choice for the success of treatment.

Abstract

Indonesian is a country with very large and overflow marine biological resources. Utilization of seaweed has been developed and become a source of revenue for Indonesian who live in coastal areas with high potential for seaweed. The demand of seaweed in the world increases as increasing in the use of seaweed for various purposeamong others in the fields of industry, food, textile, paper, paints, cosmetics, medical and pharmaceutical field. Alginate is one of materials that commonly used in the field of dentistry as printed materials to create study models. Materials in the field of dentistry must be biocompatible to the oral cavity tissues. The materials should be stable, safe, comfortable, and certainly doesn’t have a toxicity character to the oral cavity tissues and other tissues in human body. The purpose of this study is to know the toxicity of extract brown algaeSargassum sp given orally to mice. The research perform experimental laboratory research type withexperimental post-tes-only control group design. The reseach samples applyfemales white mice (Mus muscullus). Research samples divided into 5 groups of 5 female mices for each treatment group. Treatment group 1 was given 500mg/kgBW doses of Sargassum sp, group 2 was given 1000mg/KgBW doses of Sargassum sp, group 3 was given 1500mg/KgBW doses of Sargassum sp, group 4 were 2000mg/KgBW doses of Sargassum sp, and a control group was given only dose of Na CMC. The result of this study isdose in humans are converted into 2000mg/KgBW in mice, is a doses that doesn’t cause the death of whole animals. Based of acute toxicity category, the extracts of Sargassum sp that obtained from Punaga Takalar Regency, South Sulawesi includes in the mild toxic.

Abstract

Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) is common is a malignant neoplasma originated from epithelial cells. It is usually involving the oral mucosa and underlying tissue of the tongue, hypopharynx, and also larynx. This report discussed about the management of SCC at tongue with hemiglosectomy and selective neck dissection managed in a male, 57 years old who referred with chief complaints of a mass on the tongue measuring 0.5cm that did not heal, Incision biopsy result confirms a squamous cell carcinoma with well differentiated on his tongue with enlarged lymph nodes level I ipsilateral. The patient was hospitalized and hemiglosectomy surgery with selective neck dissection was conducted, with the entire edge of the excision boundary has been free of tumor mass. Hemiglosectomy with selective neck dissection is selected depending on the size of the lesion, location of lesion and metastases occurrence.
