Abstract

The objectives of this study were to find out signs, the realization of signs in to denotative and connotative meanings, and the reasons for signs realization on Tugu Si Raja Batak in Sarimarrihit Village, Sianjur Mula-Mula sub-district, Samosir Regency. The study was conducted using a qualitative approach. The data of this study were taken from Tugu Si Raja Batak. The data of the study were statues and pictures on Tugu Si Raja Batak. The data analysis was taken by observing, interviewing, and then analyzed the data based on the theory proposed by Roland Barthes. The findings indicated that there were twenty-two signs on Tugu Si Raja Batak in four forms, namely human ornaments, animal ornaments, plant ornaments, and carving. The signs of human ornaments were the Si Raja Batak means descendants with different clans and some servants for different work. The signs of animal ornaments made to show that Si Raja Batak and his descendants used the animals around him as transportations. Then, the plant ornaments they were Lime (Pangir) and Banyan tree (Jajabi) appear because the Batak people are famous for traditional medicine that uses plants such as Lime (Pangir) and betel as medicine for sick people, possessed people, and also for offerings to their ancestors. Furthermore, in the Tugu Si Raja Batak, carvings made because the Si Raja Batak seat requires beautiful decoration and their culture to respect the kings

Abstract

This study dealt with the struggle of the main character in Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts movie. The objectives were to find out the oppressions that the main character experienced, the struggles against the oppression, and how the main character struggled against the oppression. This study used descriptive qualitative as the method to analyze the data. The researcher used Young's (1990) theory to analyze the data from the movie's script. Marlina, as the movie's main character, suffered from three kinds of oppression; marginalization, powerlessness, and violence. Marlina suffered oppression because she was powerless; she lived in poverty and patriarchal culture in Sumba. Marlina also struggles against oppression by doing feminism; they are; liberal feminism and radical feminism.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out the syntactical repetition on selected poems by Maya Angelou namely Still I Rise, Caged Birds, Alone and Woman Work. The technique of collecting the data was to download the selected poems.  The data were analyzed  and found four repetition that he said . The repetition is Anaphora, Epiphora, Framing, and Anadiplosis.  Our research found that the repetition used to stress the author’s goals on her poem.  It can be make people remember her intention in her poem. Abstract

The thesis deals with conversational analysis of selling-buying in DolokSanggul traditional market. The objectives of this study were to find out types and most dominant type of turn-taking used in Batak Toba Seller and buyers in DolokSanggul Traditional market. The study was conducted by using desccriptive qualitative method. The data of the study were conversation and interaction between sellers and buyers during the selling-buying process. The data of this study contained 25 conversations. The data analysis were taken by listing and tabulating the data. The data were analyzed based on the theory that proposed by Sack et al (1974) . The findings inducted that there were three types of turn-taking found in Doloksanggul Traditional market . The finding were showed that   CS2TNS (48%) SS (20%) and SCS (32%) and the most frequent turn-taking occurred in the conversation among seller and buyer is Current Speaker Select the Next Speaker (C2TNS). The conversation described how participant organize their interaction by distributing turns to the speakers. The transition from turn to next with no gap and no overlap are common occurred.

Abstract

This paper is entitled "Analyzing Students’ Text within Critical Thinking, Critical Literacy, and Appraisal Frameworks: Dangers of Texting while Driving ", where in this paper analyze from a text that has to think critically (critical thinking) and a critical framework (Critical Literacy Framework). Analysis is the process done carefully by dividing the problem with through the technical application of analysis and the application of appropriate knowledge. In Critical thinking is a process that involves mental operations such as induction, deduction, classification, and reasoning. In the process of thinking takes place the events analyzed, criticized, and reached conclusions based on careful inference or consideration (Ibrahim and Nur, 2000). This critical activates the ability to do analysis, as well as identify questions that can be text.Keywords: analysis, critical thinking, critical literacy, appraisal, frameworks
