Abstract

The objectives of this study were to find out meanings, what, how, and why the meanings were realized in the Gotilon Batak Toba Ceremony in Dolok Sanggul Humbang Hasundutan. This study was conducted using an observation study. The data of this study were taken from Gotilon Ceremony. The sources of the data were the Gotilon Ceremony in Dolok Sanggul and the informants or Raja Parhata in Dolok Sanggul. The data were analyzed by using Roland’s theory of semiotics object. The writer found the meanings on Gotilon Batak Toba Ceremony, namely: revise, support one, support two, support three, rid, speed, addition, exploitative two, exploitative three, survive, joyfulness, invitation, stay focus, keep fight, togetherness, convince, easier, kinship, honor, offering, and thanksgiving. From those materials were found that there were verbal utterances that consist of Atur biur, Angkat nomor sada, Angkat nomor dua, Angkat nomor tolu, Buang jauh-jauh, Eme, Rugi, Ponggol nomor dua, Ponggol nomor tolu, Naeng Sahat, Tambun Namboru, Hurre Alogo, Unang mekkel, Tahan nafas, Satukan, Beres. And there were symbols namely Luhutan, Marsirippa, Sipanganon, Mangamoti, and Pesta Gotilon. The signs used in Gotilon ceremony because they want to convey the meanings of the ceremony.

Abstract

The research was found on the topic about Presupposition of the Main Character’s Utterances in Batak Toba Movie Alani Hapogoson. This study was aimed at identifying the types of presupposition, most dominant type and to elaborate the realization of the types of presupposition by the main character in Alani Hapogoson movie.. The study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The source of data was taken from the utterances of the main character’s utterances in batak toba movie alani hapogoson. The technique for analyzing the data is descriptive qualitative research based on Creswell’s theory. The result of this research was types of presupposition can be found in Alani Hapogoson movie are existensial (34%), Factive (26%), Lexical (10%), Structural (14%), Non-factive (2%), and Counterfactual (14%). The dominant type of presupposition that used by main character utterances was existensial presupposition, because used utterances formed by proper names, noun phrase and possesive to show the existence of someone.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the types of logico-semantic relations and the use of logico-semantic relations of Raja Parhata in the Saur Matua ceremony. This study was conducted by applying the descriptive qualitative method by Flick (2009). The source of data was Raja Parhata in the Saur Matua ceremony. The result of this research was types of logico-semantic relations can be found in Raja Parhata are paratactic elaboration (44,28%), paratactic enhancement (21,42%), hypotactic elaboration (7,14%), paratactic extension (11,42%), hypotactic enhancement (12,85%), hypotactic extension (2,85%). Moreover, the realization of logico-semantic relations in Raja Parhata’s utterances mostly appears by using conjunction jadi (so), molo (if), and holani (that all), adverbial clause dungi (after that), verb baen (play), and preposition tu (to).

Abstract

This study dealt with the struggle of the main character in Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts movie. The objectives were to find out the oppressions that the main character experienced, the struggles against the oppression, and how the main character struggled against the oppression. This study used descriptive qualitative as the method to analyze the data. The researcher used Young's (1990) theory to analyze the data from the movie's script. Marlina, as the movie's main character, suffered from three kinds of oppression; marginalization, powerlessness, and violence. Marlina suffered oppression because she was powerless; she lived in poverty and patriarchal culture in Sumba. Marlina also struggles against oppression by doing feminism; they are; liberal feminism and radical feminism.

Abstract

This study dealt with metaphors of Wak Uteh’s Songs in Tanjungbalai. The objectives of the study were to investigate the types of metaphors and the cultural meaning of metaphors in wak uteh’s songs in Tanjungbalai. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. This data of this study was words, phrases, and utterances that contained metaphors in Wak Uteh’s Songs in Tanjungbalai. The source of data were lyrics of 10 songs of Wak Uteh’s songs.  The data were selected by using random sampling system. For collecting data, this study used the method of documentary technique. The instrument of this study is documentary sheet. The findings showed that there were four types of Metaphors used in Wak Uteh’s Songs consecutively, Synaesthetic Metaphors (4%), Anthropomorphic (13%), Animal (20%), and Concrete to Abstract (63%). The cultural meanings of the metaphors found in the lyrics of Wak uteh’s songs were literary ones over all about the conditions of social life, economy, and culture from Tanjungbalai Malay life in coastal areas. For example in Anthropomorphic Metaphor is “ambil lah duet seringgit puntong, untuk mamboli kain pandukong (silaule, line 11) as the meaning in the cultural meaning is “Taking a piece of dollar for buying a sling”. So, in this lyric told about the parents ordered someone to take the enough money to buy a sling, Ringgit was a monetary unit that was used by Malay people in Tanjungbalai in long time. Abstract

This study aimed to find out the method used in translating Batak Toba Proverbs into English and explain the reasons for the translation method used in Mangala Pakpahan’s book: Batak Toba character kearifan Indonesia. The research was conducted by using the descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from Mangala Pakpahan’s book that contained 72 proverbs from the Batak Toba language. The findings of the study showed that not all methods were used in translating the proverbs. They were the adaptation translation method (69.44%), followed by the communicative translation method (12.5%), free translation method (11.12%), and the last was the exact translation method (6.94%). Moreover, the reason for using the translation method in translating the proverbs was the translation sounds natural even though in the form of proverbs and is still focused on English grammatical rules. Translation method was also the easier way to be understood by the reader, and it keeps retaining the translation of the proverbs without altering the original meaning.

Abstract

This study aims at describing how the teacher teaches the students to write texts to the eleven grade students of SMK Wirahusada Medan and the underlying reasons of why  the teacher did the way she did. Qualitative research design was used by the researcher to conduct this study. The subject of this study was English teacher who taught the eleven grade students of SMK Wirahusada Medan in academic year 2018/2019. The data were collected by observing, video or audio recording, and interview. The data were analysed by using Miles and Huberman data analysis techique. The findings of the study showed that most of the ways of teaching were focusing on telling the students the genre knowledge of text than focusing on teaching writing. The underlying reasons of the teacher’s ways in teaching writing were due to (1) Teacher believed that by reminding the definition of the text made the students be able to differentiate the text. (2) the teacher believed that by knowing the purpose of material, the students are able to differ a text with other text, (3) the teacher believed that the the generic structure and language feature helped the students to know the steps of writing text, (4) teacher believed that by giving the task from the easiest types, the students will slowly were able to write their other texts later.Keywords:Teaching, Teaching writing, Qualitative research

Abstract

This research discussed about Feminismin both selected novels PerempuanBerkalung Sorban and The Color Purplewhich aimed at finding out the types offeminism, reason why can the figure ofwomen struggle of feminisms and the roleof women in both of the selected novels.This research was based on Tong’s theory.This research was conducted by usingdescriptive qualitative method. The datawere taken from both selected novelswhich have feminisms, they arePerempuan Berkalung Sorban and TheColor Purple Novel. The findings showedthat there were 28 data, 24 data in types offeminism in Perempuan Berkalung Sorbanand The Color Purple Novel.The dominanttypes from both the novels is LiberalFeminisms in Perempuan BerkalungSorban Novel, because the first characterfrom Perempuan Berkalung Sorban Novelis Annisa who feels unfair treatment shereceives from her family;and there were 4data in the role of women in domesticsector can struggle in PerempuanBerkalung Sorban and The Color PurpleNovel. Abstract

The research discussed identityconstruction built in the movie of Parasite through the nonverbal behaviors aspect. The aims of this study were to find out the types of identity construction reflected through non-verbal behaviors, how the identity reflected in the movie, and to find out the reasons of the emergence of identity construction in the movie. The descriptive qualitative method is being used in this research, and the data were derived from the Parasite movie’s screenshot. The findings of the study showed that: (1) There are three identities found they are person identities, role identities, and social identities. (2) The identity construction reflected through non-verbal behaviors are object, accessories, smells/body odor. (3) The significance of identity construction emergence in the movie is to shows that every detail used in people daily can form an identity, and because movies are one of the products that people consume the most, then this becomes very helpful in showing the realities of real life.

Abstract

This study aims at finding out how film adaptation from l novel Alice Adventures in Wonderland I (1865) to the film Alice Adventures in Wonderland I 2010. In terms of addition, subtraction, and variation on its inherent elements, In the study of scientific social problems, a descriptive qualitative design is used. The researcher discovered that the film had some addition, reduction, and variation changes. These changes are also felt by the readers as a result of the film. The research findings show that there are sixteen findings for film adaptation, three findings for plot, four findings for setting, and eight findings for characters, each of which are divided into intrinsic elements of film and novel Adventures in Wonderland  I.
