Abstract

Abstract. This research aims to identify the language styles used in a biography book, ‘The Sultan’s Admiral.’ The identification may help us see how various language styles add to non-fiction writing and are structured in a biography book. This current research is a qualitative analysis that uses a content analysis method. The data source is available from the biography ‘The Sultan’s Admiral: Barbarossa’ written by Ernle Bradford and published in English language edition in 2008. The data comes in the form of linguistic elements such as syntax, lexis, and semantic forms of the text. The data analysis technique categorizes or determines stylish language features from the sample and the level of style related to linguistics and stylistics approaches. Lexis, syntactic and semantic level of language style is prior categories of this research. As a result, the technical terms and adjectives are used in the lexical level of style, direct quotations, and em-dashed ( – ) adjuncts in sentences as the structural level of style, idioms, and figures of speech are used in the semantic level of style. Those chosen styles appear with the writer's background to give extra values to the actual story. This research describes and classifies portions among several linguistic features used by the narrator/writer in the development of narrative in Barbarossa's legendary life, to demonstrate the benefits of the technique in incorporating linguistic aspects into the text. Abstract

Cerita rakyat dan dongeng dianggap materi tidak formal dalam penyusunan materi di perguruan tinggi karena struktur narasi sederhana, pemakaian kalimat dan kosakata sehari-hari, dan isi cerita yang tidak ada kaitan dengan materi formal yang dibahas dan dikerjakan dalam tugas atau ujian. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis alasan, keuntungan, dan batasan penggunaan cerita rakyat dan dongeng sebagai materi yang patut diperhitungkan oleh para pendidik tingkat perguruan tinggi untuk penguatan pendidikan karakter. Penelitian ini merupakan kajian pustaka dengan menggunakan teknik analisis wacana. Sumber data utama berupa kumpulan pustaka berupa artikel hasil eksperimen, wacana atau gagasan tertulis dalam artikel, dan hasil pemaparan ide lewat seminar tentang cerita rakyat pada pelajaran bahasa Inggris di perguruan tinggi. Pengumpulan data dengan teknik pembacaan teks. Data yang terkumpul dianalisis dengan teknik analisis isi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa cerita rakyat tidak hanya dapat dipakai dalam pelajaran budi pekerti dan perkembangan karakter, tetapi juga bermanfaat untuk pembelajaran bahasa Inggirs dalam konteks pendidikan formal di perguruan tinggi. Kesadaran akan konten naratif khusus budaya dan nilai moral dalam setiap cerita lokal atau internasional dapat membantu mahasiswa perguruan tinggi untuk penguatan karakternya.Kata Kunci: cerita rakyat, perguruan tinggi, pendidikan karakter, pengajaran bahasa asing.STRENGTHENING CHARACTER EDUCATION THROUGH FOLKSTALES IN ENGLISH LESSONS IN HIGHER EDUCATION Abstract: Folktales and fairy tales are considered informal material in the preparation of material in higher education because of the simple narrative structure, daily use of sentences and vocabulary, and story content that has no connection with formal material that is discussed and worked on in assignments or examinations. The purpose of this research paper is to analyze the reasons, advantages, and limitations of using folktales and fairy tales as material that should be taken into college-level educators to strengthen character education. This research is a literature study using discourse analysis techniques. The main data source in the form of a collection of literature in the form of articles of experimental results, discourse or ideas written in the article, and the results of the presentation of ideas through seminars about folktale in English lessons in college. Data were collected by text reading techniques. The collected data ware analyzed using content analysis techniques. The results showed that folkltales can not only be used in the lessons of character building and character development, but also beneficial for English language learning in the context of formal education in higher education. Awareness of specific cultural narrative content and moral values in any local or international story can help college students to strengthen their character.Keywords: folktales, higher education, character education, foreign language teaching

Abstract

Saat melakukan manajemen emosi pada anak usia dini, orangtua harus dalam kondisi tenang dan terkendali. Bukannya meneriaki balik si anak, menceramahinya panjang-lebar, atau bahkan menekannya dengan tujuan ia sadar terhadap kesalahannya. Semua itu akan sia-sia ketika kondisi si anak, juga kita, masih panas. Jadi, pertama-tama, tenangkan diri sendiri dulu, baru setelah itu tenangkan si anak. Kunci keberhasilan anak mengendalikan diri dimulai dari orangtua yang mampu berbuat demikian lebih dulu. Hal ini tidak akan tercapai apabila ayah atau ibunya masih mudah marah dalam menyelesaikan masalah. Setelah tenang, berikut hal-hal yang hendaknya orangtua lakukan saat si anak sedang emosi yaitu mengetahui penyebabnya, mengalihkan perhatiannya, bersikap tenang, memberikan perhatian dan pelukan, dan membiarkan anak tenang terlebih dahulu sebelum diajak berdiskusi.

Abstract

Dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris hal yang terpenting adalah bagaimana menarik siswa untuk menyukai pelajaran bahasa Inggris, apabila mereka sudah menyukai dan menyenangi suatu pelajaran maka mereka dapat menguasai pelajaran tersebut.Jadi konsep pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di Madrasah Ibtidaiyah dapat dilakukan dengan learning by playing (belajar sambil bermain). Apabila guru mengajarkan bahasa Inggris dengan metode ceramah maka anak-anak akan merasa bosan. Pembelajaran bahasa Inggris dengan permainan dapat membuat suasana belajar menjadi asik, menarik dan menyenangkan  sehingga siswa termotivasi  untuk mempelajari dan memahami materi yang diajarkan.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini dilaksanakan untuk guru di lingkungan RA Nurusssa’adah RT 007 RW 005 Tanjung Barat Jagakarsa Jakarta Selatan. Tujuan dari diadakannya kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini adalah untuk penerapan GLS dalam upaya penanaman rasa cinta terhadap tanah air khususnya pada masa pandemik ini. Oleh karena itu, kami bermaksud untuk melaksanakan kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat. Dengan harapan dapat memberikan tambahan pengetahuan kepada para tenaga pendidik supaya dapat memberikan pembekalan secara langsung mengenai pentingnya rasa cinta terhadap tanah air melalui penerapan GLS kepada para siswa dengan lebih baik.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to improve students' writing skills in English using Think Pair Share Learning Strategy. The method for this research is Classroom Action Research. The researcher will try to use the Think Pair Share strategy properly to solve problems in Teaching Writing at BIT BINA AULIA Vocational High School. The object of the research in this study is grade 10 students. Think Pair Share not only makes students think individually but also builds Communication Skills when all students are asked to present and share their thoughts and the result of discussions with their partners, or in front of the class. This research is established in two cycles within four steps for each cycles: plan, action, observation, and reflection. In reflections, the researcher finds things to improve the next cycle. Students’ worksheets have to show a good result to see how much students have improved their writing skills in hope and conclusion that the Think Pair Share Learning strategy can be used as a variation of learning to improve English writing skills

Abstract

Language is a basic need to our existence of life since speaking, listening, reading, and writing are such fundamental aspects of our daily lives. Those aspects are substantial in establishing social interaction and seizing fabulous achievements as well. However, some people suffered from injured brain, mental retardation, and autism who experienced difficulties such as speech disorder and language disorder. This research was designed to identify types of words utterances and types of language disorder that produced by an autistic savant character in the Rain Man movie. By conducting qualitative research with psycholinguistic approaches, this study revealed the autistic savant characters of the producing utterances, namely articulation disorder, phonological disorder, voice disorder and repetition. By developing people’s knowledge and awareness on the autistic language disorder, this study enlightened people to communicate and understand autistic person in their surroundings and prevented miscommunication as well. Further research is expected to be administered, particularly on an autistic woman to explore comprehensive knowledge and understanding on autistic language disorder.

Abstract

The purpose of the research is to find out the types of error which made by the ninth graders in writing descriptive text using simple present tense at SMPIT Nurul Ihsan. The number of the students is 27 students. This research uses qualitative descriptive as the approach. The researcher directly did the survey and conducted a written test to the students write English descriptive text. The result of the study shows that there are 77 errors from all students’ compositions. The most error made is misformation with the percentage 49,35%. Followed misordering with the percentage 20,78%, then addition with the percentage 18,18%, and the least error made is omission with the percentage is 11,69%. Most students made wrong sentence in misformation category. The cause of that is the interference from mother language or L1. It makes them influenced the way they think about the language they are learning. When they compose a text in English, they follow the rule of L2. Consequently, they should be guided more so that they could understand about simple present tense.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out The Correlation between Students’ Habit in Listening Song and Student’s English Listening Skill. The research conducted at the senior high school of Trampil for the twelve grade students. The school is located in East Jakarta. The method used is a survey with correlational analysis. The result of the research are there is positive and significant correlation between students’ habit in listening song and English listening skill. It is shown in the score of Fobserved is 39.286 and Sig is 0.000. The score of Fobserved is more than Ftable (> 3.25), and the score of Sig is less than 0.05 (<0.05). Based on that, we can conclude that the better of students’ habit in listening song, the better students’ listening skill.  Keywords: Correlation, Listening Song, English Listening skill.

Abstract

Abstract Total Physical Response (TPR) is an effective method that applied in learning English for kindergarten students. This method involves the students’ activity, which is related activity on their physical and movement. Based on the survey and observation in Darul Kirom Islamic Kindergarten, the team can say that the English learning is not in good achievement. This problem come because the lack competence of teacher that is not an English teacher. Moreover, the learning process is teacher’s oriented. In result, there must an effort to solve this problem, one of the ways is the use of  Total Physical Response (TPR)method in teaching English to children.Because of the importance of the good achievement in learning prosess, the team gives training to the teachers in order to improve their competence in teaching English which can boost the students’ achievement in English skills. This training followed by five teachers and twenty students, the result, this method is effective in teaching and learning English in Islamic Darul Kirom Kindergarten.Key Words: English, method, active, creative, and learning AbstrakMetode Total Physical Response (TPR) adalah metode pembelajaran yang  efektif diterapkan dalam proses pembelajaran bahasa Inggris terutama untuk siswa setingkat PAUD/TK. Metode pembelajaran ini lebih menekankan pada keaktifan siswa, yakni kegiatan langsung yang berhubungan dengan kegiatan fisik (physical) dan gerakan (movement). Berdasarkan survey dan pengamatan yang dilakukan oleh tim bahwa pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris di  TK Islam Darul Kirom belum optimal karena guru yang mengajar bukan berasal dari lulusan sarjana bahasa. Selain itu proses pembelajarannya masih berorientasi pada keaktifan guru sebagai pengajar, dengan demikian harus ada upaya yang harus mengarah kepada pencapaian kompetensi materi pembelajaran yang diperlukan untuk mengatasi permasalahan tersebut diantaranya dengan menerapkan metode pembelajaran TPR (Total Physical Response) dalam proses pembelajaran bahasa Inggris.  Karena pentingnya pencapaian hasil belajar pada siswa, tim melaksanakan pelatihan penggunaan metode TPR (Total Physical Response) untuk meningkatkan kemampuan guru dalam mengajar dan memperoleh pencapaian hasil belajar yang optimal bagi siswa.  Kegiatan ini diikuti oleh 5 orang guru TK Islam Darul Kirom dan 20 siswa. hasilnya menunjukkan kompetensi guru dapat memaksimalkan proses pembelajaran di sekolah TK ini, maka pelatihan ini dapat dikatakan berhasil meningkatkan kompetensi guru TK. Hal ini dibuktikan pada pemahaman siswa dalam mempelajari bahasa Inggris dapat meningkat dari sebelumnya. Dengan demikian penggunaan metode Total Physical Response (TPR) dikatakan efektif dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di TK Islam Darul Kirom.Kata Kunci: bahasa Inggris, metode, aktif, kreatif, dan pembelajaran
