Abstract

Laboratorium activity and experiment related to Dynamic Electricity topic in secondary schools have always been a “scary” thing to science teachers in Indonesia, especially to those with more experience in teaching Biology than Physics. To our surprise, the problem was more related to teacher’s confidence to conduct lab acitivy rather than to the availability of experiment kit in school. Our visit to two schools in Padang revealed that each school has sufficient amout of experiment kit for Electricity but the science teachers were too scared to take students to lab and get nervous when something is not working, or too scared to damage the kit. Therefore, we would like to offer a solution to overcome this problem by intoducing an easy do-it-yourself simpe electricity circuit with potato. The activity is expected to build more confidence in teachers to conduct lab activity and make science learning more fun to the students. Keywords — electric circuits, electricity from potato, school science, simple science experiment, dynamic electricity

Abstract

Science learning cannot be separated from practical activities. Practical activities provide benefits for students as a vehicle to practice basic skills in conducting experiments which are very much needed as science student teacher. The Covid-19 pandemic has prevented lecture activities including practical work from being carried out in the laboratory as they should. As a solution, students continue to carry out practical work independently in their respective residences by using tools and materials that are easily found in the surrounding environment. This study aims to capture the perceptions of science education students who are enrolled in the school's science practicum lecture on the implementation of independent practical work based on materials, practical work guide, and the implementation. The research method used is descriptive research with a quantitative approach. The instrument used was an online questionnaire which was distributed to 95 respondents. The results showed that students' perceptions were quite diverse on materials, practicum guides, and the implementation.

Abstract

Scientific literacy an individual’s understanding of scientific concepts, phenomena and processes, and their ability to apply this knowledge to new and, at times, non-scientific situations. The science literacy of Indonesian students is still low as seen from the results of the PISA test as long as Indonesia participates in this program. One learning model that can improve students' scientific literacy is the implementation of Reading to Learn (R2L). R2L is a strategy that can be applied by teachers to train students' reading skills with the aim of increasing literacy. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the implementation of R2L on students' scientific literacy about addictive, additive and psychotropic substances. This type of research is a quasi-experimental carried out with a posttest only control group design. This study conducted in SMP N 29 Padang. The sample is 31 student in experiment class and 27 students in control class. Science literacy data of the subject was collected by multiple choice test that arranged based on scientific literacy indicators. Realiabity  of the instrument was very high category. The results of hypothesis testing using the independent sample t test showed that significance value is smaller than alpha, 0.000 <0.05, so that  R2L model had a positive effect on students' scientific literacy.

Abstract

As a strategy to create learning environment by integrating culture into learning, ethnoscience fits perfectly with the aims of science lesson in the national curriculum of education in Indonesia, which is to understand how nature works, and to improve awareness toward conserving and maintaining balance in nature. Leading toward Education for Sustainability Development (ESD), science learning could serve to develop students’ ability in thinking, learning, and building awareness towards natural and physical environment. In this study, we aimed to design a web-based e-module integrated with both ethnoscience and critical thinking orientation to facilitate students’ learning dan thinking. The product is developed with 4D-model consisting of 4 stages namely: Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate. Product’s validity and practicality was assessed using instruments with Likert—scale items and analyzed with descriptive statistics. From Define and Design stage, four themes of ethnoscience are embedded in the e-module, namely: gold panning, salt farming, the making of virgin coconut oil, and Jamu– a folk drink. From develop and disseminate stage, the web-based e-module was tested to be highly valid and practical to be used as teaching materials. The product received positive feedbacks students especially related to the implementation of Kurikulum Merdeka.
