Abstract

This paper describes 11th grade students? understanding of the concept of precipitation reaction at the end of the learning process of solubility and solubility product. Precipitation reaction is an important reaction in industry, pharmacy, and daily life. In the learning process, students are asked to predict the formation of precipitation based on their understanding of solubility and solubility product concepts. Thirty eleventh grade students in one of the best senior high schools in Padang were chosen as the subject of this study. Classroom learning process was observed and recorded. Data of students? understanding were collected through a set of essay problems which was validated through expert judgment, and then integrated in students? end-of-chapter test. Through qualitative analysis, this study revealed some mistakes and misconceptions that students have regarding the application of precipitation reaction concept, and possible sources of them. Recommendations for improving the quality of learning this concept in the future are provided at the end of the paper

Abstract

Periodical properties of elements are not a new topic for students in science education department for they have studied this topic previously in senior high school and in General Chemistry course. However, teaching experiences for the past two years in Basic Inorganic Chemistry course revealed that many students still failed to master the expected learning outcomes for this topic. Therefore, this explorative study was conducted to figure out what kind of difficulty that students perceived in learning this topic. One hundred and twelve students in science education department of Universitas Negeri Padang enrolled in Basic Inorganic Chemistry course in the academic year of 2017/2018 were involved as subjects in this study, and data of students? perceived learning difficulties were collected with a questionnaire. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics technique to map out our findings which will become the fundamental consideration in discussing attempts to overcome students? perceived learning difficulties. Our findings revealed that the sources of students? perceived difficulty came from several factors, namely: the characteristic of content, personal learning style, condition of classroom learning, availability of relevant learning resources and previous learning experiences. Based on these findings, attempts for better learning of periodical properties of elements were suggested.

Abstract

Laboratorium activity and experiment related to Dynamic Electricity topic in secondary schools have always been a “scary” thing to science teachers in Indonesia, especially to those with more experience in teaching Biology than Physics. To our surprise, the problem was more related to teacher’s confidence to conduct lab acitivy rather than to the availability of experiment kit in school. Our visit to two schools in Padang revealed that each school has sufficient amout of experiment kit for Electricity but the science teachers were too scared to take students to lab and get nervous when something is not working, or too scared to damage the kit. Therefore, we would like to offer a solution to overcome this problem by intoducing an easy do-it-yourself simpe electricity circuit with potato. The activity is expected to build more confidence in teachers to conduct lab activity and make science learning more fun to the students. Abstract

Abstract: The research purpose is to analyse the needs of Science Technology Engineering and Mathematic (STEM)-based science practicum books for secondary school. This is descriptive qualitative research with questionnaire and interview methods. The sample of this research were secondary school science teacher and students. The data were analysed descriptively with the results of data processing in percent (%). The results showed that 98% of secondary school science teachers did not know that STEM-based practicum activities could train 21st century students' skills and 90% of secondary school students stated that they never carried out practicum activities other than laboratory activities. The results also shows that 75% of students do not have science practicum book and only have worksheets provided when carrying out practicum activities. Furthermore, the results of the study also showed that 70% of students stated that practicum activities were not discussed deeply when they entered the class. It can be concluded that there is an urgency to develop a STEM-based science practicum book to that can practice students' 21st century skills in facing the era of the industrial revolution 4.0.Abstrak: Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis kebutuhan buku praktikum IPA berbasis Science Technology Engineering and Matematic (STEM) untuk sekolah menengah. Jenis penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif dengan metode angket dan wawancara. Sampel penelitian ini adalah guru dan siswa IPA SMP. Data dianalisis secara deskriptif dengan hasil pengolahan data dalam persen (%). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa 98% guru IPA sekolah menengah tidak mengetahui bahwa kegiatan praktikum berbasis STEM dapat melatih keterampilan siswa abad 21 dan 90% siswa sekolah menengah menyatakan tidak pernah melakukan kegiatan praktikum selain kegiatan laboratorium. Hasil penelitian juga menunjukkan bahwa 75% mahasiswa tidak memiliki buku praktikum IPA dan hanya memiliki LKS yang disediakan saat melaksanakan kegiatan praktikum. Selanjutnya hasil penelitian juga menunjukkan bahwa 70% mahasiswa menyatakan bahwa kegiatan praktikum tidak dibahas secara mendalam ketika memasuki kelas. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa ada urgensi untuk mengembangkan buku praktikum sains berbasis STEM yang dapat melatih keterampilan abad 21 mahasiswa dalam menghadapi era revolusi industri 4.0.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan menggali pemahaman yang dimiliki siswa kelas XI IPA di SMA mengenai konsep pengaruh suhu terhadap kelarutan garam elektrolit, dan dasar yang digunakan siswa dalam membangun pemahaman tersebut. Subyek dari penelitian adalah 32 siswa SMA yang dipilih dengan teknik purposive sampling. Subyek penelitian berasal dari dua kelas di SMA unggulan di kota Padang. Dalam setiap kelas, subyek penelitian dilabeli sebagai high- dan low-achievers berdasarkan hasil belajar kimia sebelumnya. Pemahaman siswa diperoleh melalui dua soal yang telah divalidasi oleh pakar dan terintegrasi dalam soal ulangan harian siswa setelah mempelajari materi kelarutan dan hasilkali kelarutan. Data pemahaman siswa dianalisis dengan teknik analisis data kualitatif, kemudian dikelompokkan ke dalam kategori tingkat pemahaman yang dikembangkan oleh Abraham, dkk. (1992).

Abstract

Afer 9 month doing online learning, a lot of things can happen in learning and teaching process. The purpose of this research is to know the respond of middle school science teacher to online learning during COVID 19 outbreak. This is a descriptive qualitative research with questionnaire as the research instrument. The sample are 35 middle school science teachers from MGMP IPA Kota Padang. The auestionnaire shows that most of the science teacher do an online learning through this year because of the COVID 19 Pandemis. Whatsaap is the most used application and online learning really helps the teacher with teaching. Furthermore, there are a lot of obstacle with online learning that science teacher faces during COVID 19 outbreak and most of the teachers hope that learning will continue face to face in the classroom.

Abstract

Kemajuan teknologi informasi dan akses internet yang luas semakin memudahkan manusia untuk melakukan transaksi jual beli dimanapun dan kapanpun. Salah satu dampak dari kemudahan ini yang dikhawatirkan adalah semakin dianggap wajarnya gaya hidup komsumtif yang berlawanan dengan konsep gaya hidup hemat. Terbukanya kesempatan untuk mencari kemudahan dalam memenuhi kebutuhkan hidup cenderung membuat manusia mengabaikan aspek keilmuan dan kemampuan diri sendiri untuk berusaha lebih keras. Melalui pelatihan ini, kami bermaksud menumbuhkan semnagat wirausaha siswa SMP Kota Padang melalui pembuatan produk berbasis sains untuk sekaligus melatih keterampilan proses sains mereka. Sebanyak 114 siswa dari dua sekolah menengah pertama di kota Padang terlibat dalam pelatihan ini. Setiap kelompok siswa terlihat bersemangat menyiapkan dan mendesign label dan merek dagang untuk produk sabun yang dihasilkan. Feedback dari kegiatan pelatihan ini sangat positif karena 98.12% peserta menyatakan bahwa kegiatan ini menyenangkan sekaligus meningkatkan pemahaman mereka tentang produk sabun cair cuci piring yang mereka gunakan sehari-hari.

Abstract

Assessment literacy is fundamental for teacher because it is related to decision making task which will then give impact to students’ future. Assessment literacy influences teachers’ routine practice of assessment in classroom. Without knowing the current assessment literacy among teachers, it is difficult to monitor or give relevant reinforcement to improve the quality of assessment practice. Therefore, this study is aimed to figure out the profile of science teachers’ assessment literacy through a 54-items questionnaire developed from Assessment Literacy Standard (ALS) from Michigan Assessment Consortium. The questionnaire consists of selected choice response and open-ended question. Fifteen secondary school science teachers voluntarily participated in this study which came from 9 school in West Sumatra. Then, data was analyzed with descriptive analysis technique. Our findings revealed that while most teachers agreed with the ideal condition of assessment practice stated in the questionnaire, most are not sure when it comes to analyzing data from assessment with statistic tools or taking the use of assessment result further to improve learning quality for both students and teacher themselves. Implication of these findings on the preparation program of science student teacher in Universitas Negeri Padang was discussed further.

Abstract

This study aimed to figure out what kind of learning resources that science students-teacher used at Basic Inorganic Chemistry Course, especially for the topic of Atomic Structure and Periodical Properties of elements, given the fact that they have studied these topics twice: in Chemistry subject at senior high school and in the second semester at the university. The main background of this study was students’ grades at the end of the semester which was still not living up to the expectation. We believed there could be several factors behind this result. However in this study, we focused on one factor: learning resources. A survey was conducted to figure out: 1) what kind of learning resources that students use; and 2) what are the characteristics of learning resources students expect to have to help them in this course. The data was then analyzed with descriptive statistics technique. Our discussion expanded to the existing learning resources that students can access and what we could offer to help narrowing the gap.

Abstract

Salah satu tujuan dari pembelajaran IPA adalah untuk mengenali gejala alam agar dapat hidup berdampingan dengan alam tanpa kendala berarti. Krisis air bersih adalah salah satu tanda bahwa ada ketidakcocokan antara gaya hidup manusia dengan kondisi alam. Bererapa daerah di Indonesia telah mulai mengalami krisis air bersih, akibat musim kemarau yang berlangsung lama. Meski Indonesia merupakan negara kepulauan yang dikelilingi laut, dampak perubahan iklim dan bencana kebakaran hutan dan lahan yang meningkat dalam lima tahun terakhir turut menjadi faktor dibalik krisis air bersih. Khusus untuk wilayah kota Padang, sebagai salah satu wilayah yang rentan terhadap bencana gempa, banjir, dan tsunami, pengetahuan dan keterampilan untuk mengatasi masalah air bersih merupakan keharusan untuk dimiliki setiap warga. Pelatihan ini bertujuan untuk memperkenalkan salah satu cara memperoleh air bersih dengan membuat kit penyaringan air konvensional menggunakan alat dan bahan yang murah dan mudah diperoleh di sekitar lingkungan tempat tinggal. Melalui pelatihan ini, diharapkan peserta lebih siap menghadapi berbagai situasi dimana air bersih sulit didapat dan mampu menerapkan keterampilan yang diperoleh untuk membantu masyarakat di lingkungan sekitar. Selain itu, melalui pelatihan ini juga diharapkan kesadaran peserta akan pentingnya menjaga kualitas air melalui mencgah terjadinya pencemaran juga meningkat.
