Abstract

To understand the principles of second language acquisition, we could adopt a variety of perspective. Research on second language acquisition (SLA) by children and adults is characterized by many different subfields and perspectives, both cognitive and social in orientation. Although children feature as participants in this research, it is relatively rare to find reviews or overviews of SLA that deal specifically with child SLA although there are a few important exceptions. This general lack of focus on children?s SLA is somewhat surprising, considering that data from children as first language learners have often provided a basis and impetus for SLA theorizing. Among the best-known first language studies to prove influential was Brown?s seminal work showing a predictable order of morpheme acquisition by children under the age of three. Many early years settings now welcome children and families from different cultures who use languages other than English. Young children who are starting to learn English as an additional language may also be attending a nursery school, pre-school, day nursery or child-minder perhaps for the first time. They will bring with them many skills and experiences from their home culture and will be both anxious and excited about their new situation. A good foundation for learning English as an additional language is embedded in quality early years practice. To know more about the principle of second language acquisition in children, this paper will present some issues related with it such as the nature and the role of language learning and the logical problem in language learning.

Abstract

This study was aimed at finding out the effectiveness of the genre-based instructional model in the teaching of writing skills viewed from students' creativity. This study employed a quasi-experimental research design. The samples consisted of two classes in which one class was treated by using the genre-based instructional (GBI) model and the second class was subjected to the process-based instruction (PBI) model. The writing test and creativity test were functioned as research instruments to collect the data in both classes. The data were analyzed using the multifactor analysis of variance (ANOVA). The research finding informed that the GBI model was more effective than the PBI model. It was proved with the value of sig. (0.008) was lower than sig. level 0.05. Thus, students having high creativity have better writing achievement than those who have low creativity and it was proved with the value of sign (0.000) was lower than sig. level 0.05. It means that the effect of instructional model and writing skills rests on the level of students' creativity. The finding indicates that there is a significant correlation between the instructional model being applied and creativity in the teaching of writing skills.

Abstract

The need to acquire reading skills is increasing along with the needs of students to attain information. Therefore, this study aims at improving student’s reading comprehension viewed from the motivation level using the contextual teaching and learning (CTL) approach at SMPN 1 Jonggat. To this end, a classroom action research consisting of two cycles was applied. Each cycle consisted of four stages, namely plans, actions, observations, and reflections. The subject of this study was the second-grader of SMPN 1 Jonggat, while the object of this study was the use of contextual teaching and learning (CTL) approach to improve students’ reading comprehension in relation to motivation. The observation sheets, questionnaires, and reading tests were employed to collect the data. As result, the study showed that the use of CTL approach was effective to improve students’ reading comprehension and motivation to learn. Students’ achievement was 75 meaning that the passing grade enacted in the school was achieved. Meanwhile, the students’ motivation to learn was at the high level as proven by the percentage of students’ motivation which was at the standard value. Thus, it can be concluded that Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) approach can improve students’ motivation to learn as well as their reading comprehension.

Abstract

The research aimed to provide students’ learning and target needs of incorporating culture-based English instructionalmaterials in enhancing students’ critical thinking skills, ELT achievement, and classroom interaction at the Central Lombok middle schools. The research was a quantitative study. The 350 students and 10 English teachers were involved in the research. The average of students’ age ranged from 12-13 years old, while the English teachers were certified Englishteachers at the middle schools. They had also been from five to seven years of teaching practice experience. The data were collected using a questionnaire to see the students’ and teachers’ needs that were focused on target needs and learning needs. The target needs comprised the learning goals, lacks, and wants, while the learning needs included learning inputs, students’ roles, and classroom management. The data were analyzed using some steps; computation, display, drawing conclusion, and verification processes. Based on the data analysis, the target needs show that students are expected to get English proficiencies by providing them various cultural materials, namely local arts, traditional games, traditional rates, traditional technologies, and traditional pieces of literature. It can bring them to think critically to improve ELT achievement and build classroom interaction. At the same time, the analysis of learning needs informs that students need an appropriate English learning approach. They show they have an intention to be autonomous learners.

Abstract

This study was aimed at developing an intercultural language learning (ILL) model and finding out its effectiveness to increase students’ writing skills. The kind of this study was procedural research (R&D) design. This study was preceded with the development phases and continued by field-testing. The field-testing was conducted by using a quasi-experimental method to know the effectiveness of the developed learning model. The sample included 64 students. The students were divided into two groups and each group consisted of 32 students. One group was the experimental group taught by suing the ILL model and the other group was the control group taught by implementing the conventional learning model. The mean score of students taught by ILL model was 80.34 and those taught by conventional one was 69.97. The data were defined as normal and homogeneous data because the value of sig. was higher than sig. level 0.05. Based on the ANOVA test, the value of sig. (0,000) was lower than the sig. level 0.05. It means there is a significantly different achievement of students taught using an ILL model rather than the conventional learning model. The result informed ILL model was more effective than the conventional one in the teaching of writing skills.

Abstract

Pengabdian ini menerapkan metode Virtual-Based Active Participatory Action. Article Writing and Publication Strategies in National and International Journals: Efforts to Internationalize Higher Education Abstract Writing in reputable national and international journals is one of techniques to improve authors or researchers’ collaboration and connection but it is considered as a uneasy action to be done. This dedication aims to help researchers (novice lecturers and postgraduate students) write and publish articles in reputable national and international journals effectively. This service applies the Virtual-Based Active Participatory Action method. Participants involved in the service totaled 332 participants in virtual meetings. Thirty participants were engaged in intensive meetings and were designed in Article Schools sessions. Participants in this intensive meeting are limited based on the quality of the articles reviewed by the service team. Based on the results of this service, the findings show that the novice lecturers and the postgraduate students can diminish their difficulties in determining the novelty of their studies; their topics or research issues are up-to-date nationally and internationally; they overcome their problems in presenting reviews of related literature in articles; and determine the reputable publication journals.
