Abstract

Twenty years have passed since the US occupation of Iraq, yet the deployment of the US military in the Middle Eastern country remains today. Initially, the US argued that the primary aim for invasion was the disarmament of the mass weapons (WMD). Further on, they claimed that the intervention was to help establish the Iraq democracy. The final justification for the troops to stay was to combat ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria). This raises the question, what are the true motives of the US foreign policy in Iraq? This research was conducted using a qualitative method by analyzing textual data from the previous studies, official documents, and media reports. The data are analyzed using foreign policy theory related to national interests. The findings of this study indicate that the main motive why the US military continue to exist in Iraq is to maintain its power and hegemony in the region. In line with that, the US also has economic motives, such as oil and arms business.

Abstract

In 2017, Sweden built women entrepreneurship (SHE-Leads Program) in Saudi Arabia to foster networks, meetings, and educational opportunities to train Saudi Arabian women as entrepreneurs and innovators. The aim of this study is to elucidate how did Sweden’s feminist foreign policy build women’s entrepreneurship in Saudi Arabia 2017-2021. This study was conducted using interview method by electronic mail with Monika Wirkkala, Director of the Department of Communication and Analysis of Sweden at the Swedish Institute (SI). The data are analyzed using the feminist foreign policy concept proposed by Cheung, Gürsel, Kirchner, & Scheyer, which encompasses five core values of feminist foreign policy. The results were as follows: (1) intersectionality, Sweden applied this policy fairly without any differentiation among participants; (2) empathetic reflectivity, Swedish leaders and stakeholders responded positively to this policy by developing SHE-Pioneer; (3) substantive representation and participation, Sweden actively engaged women from the Swedish Institute (SI) and collaborated with non-state actors in formulating and implementing policies; (4) accountability, the policy incorporates evaluation and monitoring, involving program participants, stakeholders, and partners; (5) commitment to peace, the SHE-Leads Program policy is implemented through collaboration, involving participants from diverse backgrounds, and aims to strengthen relations between Sweden and Saudi Arabia. This study concluded that Sweden feminist foreign policy in building women entrepreneurship in Saudi Arabia (SHE-Leads Program) has reflected Sweden feminist foreign policy and has implemented the five core values of the feminist foreign policy concept.

Abstract

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) number 2 is "zero hunger," among the targets mentioned in the SDGs document are stunting prevention and sustainable agriculture. One of the causes of stunting is the lack of nutrition, especially foods that contain iron and zinc, which come from green vegetables. The community service carried out by the Team of the International Relations Study Program at Padjadjaran University integrates these targets by encouraging the village residents to process organic waste as fertilizer and grow vegetables organically. The community service carried out in the RW 22 Cileunyi Kulon Village in the form of assistance and consultation for the village residents so that they are consistent in processing organic waste and growing vegetables that are sources of iron and zinc. In this activity, the team conducted interviews and dialogue with the village residents (who had previously received education on processing organic waste and tools for organic farming) to evaluate their activities so far. Thus, the method used is PRA (Participatory Rural Appraisal), in which the team acts as a facilitator, and residents carry out the activities independently. The findings from this assistance are that consistent residents have strong motivation regarding the benefits of processing organic waste and growing organic vegetables.

Abstract

In early 2020, the international community was faced with Covid-19. At the global level, the COVAX Facility was established to ensure all countries in the world have equal access to Covid-19 vaccines. However, many vaccine-producing countries have undertaken bilateral ways to distribute vaccines directly. The existence of the Covid-19 vaccine is still determined by vaccine manufacturing companies. This article aims to examine the international structure after the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic based on the postulate that Covid-19 vaccine-producing countries will become world hegemons in a non-polar world structure. The concepts used are health diplomacy and hegemony. The evolving operational components used to determine world hegemon are vaccine types, consumer countries, and vaccine production capacity. The method used is pseudo-qualitative. The article concludes that (i) world hegemony in terms of vaccine types is China, Russia, the United States, and India; (ii) the world hegemons in terms of the number of consumer countries are the United States, the United Kingdom and China, and (iii) the world hegemons in terms of vaccine production capacity are China, the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Finally, the world hegemons that meet these all criteria are China and the United States.
