Abstract

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak has the potential to affect the mental health of medical personnel. This study aimed to investigate the anxiety experienced by medical personnel during the COVID-19 outbreak and its correlation with individual work performance. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 501 Medical Personnel in Indonesia. Anxiety level and work performance were assessed by the GAD-7 and IWP-1.0. Data analysis techniques used were descriptive statistics, Man-Whitney test, Kruskal-Wallis test, and Spearman's Rank-Order Correlation. The results showed that 33.33% of the participants did not experience anxiety, followed by moderate, mild, and severe levels (31.14%, 27.74%, and 7.78%). Furthermore, the level of anxiety was different in terms of sex, age, and type of medical personnel, while there was no difference in the length of time of work. The results of the correlation analysis showed that anxiety was correlated with task performance and contextual performance, but there was no correlation with the counter-productive work behavior. There is a crucial need for psychological assistance to medical personnel in orders to reduce their anxiety as well as improve their performance.

Abstract

Writing, a skill that involved multiple facets of a language, is commonly considered to be the hardest skill to master. Using appropriate instructional media in teaching writing may make an enormous contribution to the achievement of students. This study explored the impact of cinquain poems as an instructional media on the ability of students to compose paragraphs by implementing a quasi-experimental research method. Sixty first semester students from English Education Study Program, Bengkulu University, chosen using total population sampling, were evenly divided into experimental and control groups. To assess their writing skills, the students were given a writing test as pre-test at the first meeting and a post-test at the sixteenth meeting. Inter-raters were used to eliminate bias in rating the work of students. The results of the paired sample t-test showed that implementing cinquain poems significantly improves the ability of students to compose paragraphs. In addition, independent sample t-test analysis also showed that the abilities of the students in paragraph writing were significantly higher than those who were not taught using cinquain poems. These findings indicate that it is beneficial to teach writing through cinquain poems to help students develop and organize their ideas, improve their vocabulary, and build an engaging learning atmosphere.

Abstract

Learning strategy is an important factor in the success of achieving communicative language skills. Besides the awareness of using various strategies, applying technology in the language learning activity also becomes crucial for learners to succeed. However, learning strategies and the use of technologies by students of English Subjects at colleges and universities have not been widely found in the literature. For this reason, the research is aimed at finding out the application of strategies and technologies used by high proficiency students. The research is designed by combining both qualitative and quantitative research as the so-called Mixed Method. The participants involved were 33 high proficiency students in English subjects. They were taken based on the tests from 169 students spreading across four faculties at Universitas Bengkulu – Sumatera, Indonesia. After providing the test to determine the high proficiency student, the questionnaires were administered to collect the data related to the strategies and technologies applied by the students. Eventually, an interview was also undertaken to gain the qualitative data. Based on the questionnaire data, it was found that the students applied all learning strategies, namely: memory, cognitive, metacognitive, compensation, affective, and social strategies. Of the six strategies, metacognitive was the strategy mostly used with a mean score of 3.771 and followed by cognitive strategy with 3.643 points. Meanwhile, the least used ones were compensation and social, which have a value of 3.419 and 3.460, respectively. In addition, based on the interview, the use of technology as a learning strategy was also concluded. The high proficiency students applied various technologies such as mobile phones, various Internet Websites, and language applications to practice English. Of these various technologies, mobile phones were the most dominant.

Abstract

Abstract English for Specific Purpose (ESP) has grown up quickly in the area of English Language Teaching (ELT). It is separated from English language teaching in general since the needs for English in a defined context becomes essentially significant. Thus, the central focus of ESP is subjective to the students’ needs. The course is preliminary intended to address what students expect to have and to do in learning activities. One of the important elements in ESP course is material design. In this paper, the discussion is related to some basic principles in designing ESP materials; they are stimulating, sequenced, authentic, and supplemented.

Abstract

Some studies concerned about engagement markers (EMs) have been conducted among international authors. However, it does not literally trigger Indonesian scholars to study this discipline. Based on this fact, this research aimed to compare EMs in the discussion section of research articles (RAs) written by English Education students of Bengkulu University and RAs published in a reputable English journal. The corpora were analyzed by using the documentation checklist with a quantitative approach. The results showed that the more frequent types of EMs employed by students were knowledge appeals and directives. Similarly, experienced authors of RAs published in the reputable English journal employed the same dominant EMs. However, the order of minor prevalent markers in both corpora differed slightly. The Chi-square test result indicated that the differences in EMs between both corpora were significant in quantity (with Asymp sig. 0.000). More specifically, the experienced authors used a more considerable amount of EMs. In conclusion, the higher frequency of EMs in experienced writers’ RAs signifies the authors’ awareness of using EMs to construct relationships with readers. Therefore, it is essential to emphasize the use of EMs in academic writing. Further study is suggested to analyze the accuracy of EMs in the corpora and focus on a particular type of EMs for achieving more comprehensive findings.

Abstract

Applying appropriate teaching strategy can give huge contribution to students’ achievement. This study investigated the effects of Read, Encode, Annotate, Ponder (REAP) strategy and reading interest on reading comprehension achievement (RCA) of the third semester students of English study program at IAIN Kerinci by applying experimental research method with factorial design. A questionnaire was distributed to the population to find out their reading interest level. Forty students were divided into Experimental and Control groups equally; they were given reading comprehension test as the pre-test and post-test to measure their RCA. The results indicated that REAP strategy significantly improved students’ RCA. Moreover, although the interaction effect between REAP strategy and reading interest on students’ RCA was not found, the mean difference of the post-test scores from the whole sample indicated that the achievement of High reading interest students were significantly better than Low reading interest students. These results suggest that English teachers should apply various appropriate teaching strategies and monitor students’ reading interest while teaching reading.

Abstract

This study investigated the appropriateness and patterns of sound stress on nouns ending in -ion produced by students of English education study program. The research is designed as a descriptive study. There are 40 English students from Universitas Bengkulu and Universitas Negeri Padang who were selected purposively out of 240 students as the research participants. The data was gathered by using a pronunciation test comprises of 40 nouns ending in -ion with the category of 2, 3, 4, and 5 or more syllables. The participants' utterances were recorded in an audio form, then the sound stress was analyzed using the Audacity application. Based on data analysis, it was discovered that: 1) only 34.44% of students produced the sound stress appropriately, while the rest (65.56) did not; and 2) the pattern of sound stress on noun ending in -ion pronounced by the students varied, with the no stress category dominating. It proves that the more syllables of nouns ending in -ion, the more difficult it is for the students to produce sound stress accurately. Finally, the English students are expected to raise their awareness of practicing sound stress, as it is important for the lecturers to provide more chances for the students in the learning activities.

Abstract

Although there have been several studies investigated the effect of COVID-19 outbreak on mental health, studies that specifically analyze the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on bank employees have not been investigated, especially during the new normal era. Therefore, this study aims to assess the mental health of bank employees and its correlation with dimensions of work motivation. This online cross-sectional study measured 403 participants using the DASS-21 and the MWMS scale. Participants who experienced depression, anxiety, and stress at the moderate to extremely severe level were 32.51%, 63.77%, and 7.94%. Furthermore, there are no differences in depression, anxiety, and stress on all demographic variables, except for the job position characteristics, which are significantly different on the anxiety scale. The correlation analysis results show that depression is negatively correlated with introjected regulation, identified regulation, and intrinsic motivation, whereas depression is positively correlated with the amotivation dimension; anxiety has a negative correlation with extrinsic regulation-material, introjected regulation, identified regulation, and intrinsic motivation; then stress is negatively correlated with the five dimensions including extrinsic regulation-social, extrinsic regulation-material, introjected regulation, identified regulation, and intrinsic motivation. These findings suggest that banks in Indonesia should provide mental health interventions for employees.
