Abstract

Treatment for Rehidration After Exercise with Coconut Water (Cocos nucifera L.), White Sugar Enrichted Coconut Water, Suplement Beverage and Water Abstract The influences of coconut water and white sugar enriched coconut water compared to commercial supplement beverage to heal dehydration, have been investigated. Method used in this assesment was double blind cross over design in four times experiment  and one week washout period. After conditioning athletes’ hydration, athletes ran at 75% VO2max  for one hour until reached dehydration state. Then body fluid loss recovered during rehydration period equal to 120% fluid lost during exercise. Rehydration used coconut water recovered athletes’ condition back to normal through body weight and hematocrit recovery, with rehydration index better than control, which were 2,09±0,32, 2,40±0,45,  2,14±0,38 and 3,02±0,52 respectively for coconut water, enriched coconut water, “X” supplement beverage and plain water (control). Coconut water induced urine production less than sugar enriched coconut water and “X” supplement beverage, but enriched coconut water was better in maintaining athletes blood sugar levels during the rehydration period. Keywords: Rehydration index, Dehydration, Coconut water, White sugar enriched coconut water, Blood glucose.

Abstract

Research in the area of herbal neuropharmacological effects has increased markedly over the past decades. This research was aimed to further investigate neuropharmacological properties of Cyperus rotundus rhizomes fraction by measuring hypnotic-siccative and anticonvulsant activities. The exploratory behavior test was performed using Hole Board method while motor coordination was assessed using Rotarod Test. The result showed that the 70% ethanol fraction of Cyperus rotundus rhizome in has significant (p <0,05) neuropharmacological activities. All three fractions tested (ethanol, ethyl acetate, and n-hexane), the ethanol fraction showed the best hypnotic-sedative and anticonvulsant activities. Ethanol Cyperus rotundus rhizome fraction could decrease the duration of HLE equal to sodium valproate and potentiated the phenobarbital-induced sleep by decreasing the onset and prolonging the duration of sleep. The highest dose of 70% ethanol fraction of Cyperus rotundus rhizome (356.7 mg/kg) showed the best anxiolytic activity comparable to diazepam (p> 0.05). In conclusion, Teki ladang (Cyperus rotundus) rhizome appeared as potent neuropharmacological drug candidate with abilities comparable to synthetics drugs.

Abstract

Pengurus Pembinaan Kesejahteraan Keluarga (PKK) of Pondok Bambu, East Jakarta, was attended by members ranging in age from 30 to 70 years. There had been training on ginger planting by other parties in Pondok Bambu's RPTRA, but there was no follow-up to this activity so that the ginger plants were not well maintained. These PKK members are used to using traditional ginger medicines to maintain health, but the processing is only limited to hereditary knowledge. As educators and practitioners in the pharmaceutical field, we feel that we have an obligation to provide additional knowledge related to the proper way of treating and utilizing ginger for health. This community service activity aimed to increase the knowledge of PKK members about ginger, improve skills in processing ginger into syrup products in the hope of improving the health as well as using this knowledge to run a business in order to increase the economy of the residents. This activity was held at RPTRA Pondok Bambu Berseri using interactive and demonstration methods. The evaluation results showed an increase in knowledge of PKK members of processing ginger syrup and got the benefits of ginger for the health.

Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is one of the leading causes of death in Indonesia. Early intervention is very important to delay the development of this disease. This study aimed to determine the effect of XOS (Xylo-oligosaccharide) as prebiotic in preventing insulin resistance. The rats were divided into 5 groups: XOS 2 gr/kg, XOS 1 gr/kg, XOS 0.5 gr/kg, diabetic control, and non-diabetic control. Animals were given the test substances and standard feed for 2 weeks then induced with STZ (streptozotocin) except for non-diabetic control. On the 19th day, the data was collected. The results showed that XOS 2 gr/kg BW could prevent blood sugar elevation which is 57.84% lower than diabetic control and show a comparable cholesterol level to normal control. It can be concluded that administration of XOS showed a significant effect in preventing T2DM.

Abstract

Tobacco extract had been proven to have antimicrobial activity against Streptococcus mutans. To maximize the use of tobacco extract on topical use as an antibacterial, it could be formulated into a pharmaceutical preparation. This study aimed to formulate tobacco extract in gel preparation by using Hidroxy Propyl Methyl Cellulose (HPMC) as a gelling agent and to test its activity on S. mutans. The tobacco extract gel was prepared in 3 formulas with variations of HPMC concentration of 1.5% (F1), 2% (F2) and 2.5% (F3). The research began with tobacco extraction, then continued with characteristics evaluation. The extract was formulated in gel form and evaluated for 12 weeks of physical stability. Antibacterial activity was tested using the diffusion method. The evaluation results of tobacco extract gel showed that all formulas were stable during 12 weeks storage. Antimicrobial activity against S.mutans showed inhibitory diameter of F1, F2 and F3, were 9,07 mm, 19,53 mm, and 11,57 mm respectively. The test was continued by determining the relative potential of F2 compared to erythromycin. The test results showed 1.2 x 10-2 relative potential compare to erythromycin. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that HPMC concentration difference did not give significant difference to the physical stability of tobacco gel, with the best antibacterial activity on S. mutans obtained from F2.
