Abstract

Individuals pursuing studies outside their native cultural environment demand complex adaptation. Migration to a culturally distinct environment propels cross-cultural adaptation and communication, especially in Semarang which attracts diverse students, including those from the Batak ethnic group. In this context, cross-cultural communication, particularly with Javanese culture, becomes essential in Semarang's culturally diverse setting. This research examines the cultural adaptation of Batak ethnic students within the host culture during their educational journey in Semarang. The employed method is qualitative, grounded in the interpretive paradigm and phenomenological approach. Data for this study were obtained through in-depth interviews with four Batak ethnic students aged 18 and above, who had not previously resided in Semarang. The findings of this research reveal that the cultural adaptation of Batak ethnic students in Semarang follows several stages based on the U-Curve model. The stages experienced by Batak ethnic students in adapting to the new culture encompass entering the new culture, culture shock, adjustment to the new culture, and understanding the core of the new culture. In the first stage, Batak ethnic students encounter differences in values, norms, language, and lifestyle compared to Javanese culture, resulting in mixed feelings of excitement and enthusiasm, as well as anxiety stemming from unfamiliarity with the new environment. The second stage, termed as the culture shock phase, marks a period where feelings of alienation and discomfort start to arise due to significant cultural disparities, such as language, communication style, and cuisine. However, through effort and time, Batak ethnic students successfully transition into the adjustment phase, where they learn and adapt to new customs, including mastering Javanese language for daily interactions. In this stage, support from local peers plays a pivotal role in aiding Batak ethnic students to adapt more effectively. This adjustment process varies in duration, ranging from two weeks to six months. Ultimately, by grasping the essence of the new culture, Batak ethnic students feel more at ease and adept at functioning within Javanese culture. Understanding the language, customs, and local norms assists in overcoming anxiety and enhances comfort in interacting with the local community. Anxiety also emerges as a factor faced by Batak ethnic students during the adaptation process, primarily due to uncertainty in encountering unfamiliar culture, lack of peers from the same hometown, and a sense of longing for their place of origin.

Abstract

The impact of family divorce is felt by parents and children, including loss of emotional support, the emergence of conflict, and changes in aspects of the family. Post-divorce conflict and negative interactions between parents that are exposed to the child's daily life can reflect negative expressions and emotions in the family, while interactions around the child can be internalized and shape how the child sees themselves (self-concept). This research was conducted to find out how communication patterns within the family influence the formation of children's self-concept. The theories used in this research are family communication pattern theory and social self-construction theory. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative with a phenomenological approach. The subjects in this study were children from divorced families who lived with one parent aged 15-21 years. The research results showed that one informant adhered to a consensual family communication pattern and two informants adhered to a protective family communication pattern. Both family communication patterns have a high conformity orientation, so that children are the ones who adapt and obey the parents' wishes, opinions and regulations. Furthermore, the results of this research also show that the formation of the informants' self-concept tends to be negative, characterized by low self-esteem, caused by the habit of comparing themselves with those around them, children see themselves as not comparable or equal to other people. Associated with a negative self-image from their own interpretation and evaluation, shown by a pessimistic and insecure attitude.

Abstract

This study aims to explore how millennial mothers perceive and engage in sharenting, specifically on the Instagram platform, focusing on self-presentation. Drawing on symbolic interaction theory and self-presentation theory, in-depth interviews were conducted with eligible millennial mothers. The data was analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). The findings highlight that millennial mothers intentionally select and present symbolic elements through Instagram features like editing tools, feed, story, filter, caption, and background music to convey aspects of self-identity. This process is closely intertwined with audience interaction. Furthermore, mothers place significant emphasis on the content they share, prioritizing positivity and educational value. This selective approach aligns with self-presentation strategies, including ingratiation, self-promotion, and exemplification. These strategies collectively contribute to positive audience impressions, portraying harmonious family dynamics, demonstrating parental competence, and reflecting integrity and moral values. The research suggests that millennial mothers find value in utilizing Instagram for sharenting, strategically creating positive impressions to support their roles as parents. While sharenting offers numerous benefits, it is important to acknowledge potential emotional impacts on mothers. This study also indicates that sharenting will continue to be a significant aspect of millennial motherhood. This underscores the importance of deeper understanding and digital literacy education in the community.

Abstract

Anti-Chinese sentiments spread since the Dutch colonial era and the emergence of regulations that are burdensome for ethnic Chinese are the background for the persistence of stereotypes and acts of discrimination to this day. As a result, films that raise issues about ethnic Chinese present stereotypes that are deeply embedded in the cultural construction of society. This research aims to find out the representation of Chinese ethnic identity and intersectionality in the film Dimsum Martabak. This research uses Identity Negotiation Theory, constructivism paradigm, and data analysis techniques using John Fiske's semiotic analysis. The results of this study show that the Chinese ethnic identity depicted in the film normalizes and confirms the stereotypes believed by the wider community. In addition, the Chinese ethnic intersection shown in the movie is still difficult to find. The stereotypes displayed in the film are in the form of Chinese ethnic exclusivity and Chinese ethnic dominance in the economic and business fields. The exclusivity of ethnic Chinese in the film is shown through cultural elements that are still oriented and adapted from Chinese culture, difficult to mingle and be open to different cultures, and drop others who are culturally different. Chinese domination in the economic and business fields is shown through the portrayal of Chinese ethnic characters as entrepreneurs who come from wealthy families. Based on the results of this study, recommendations for future research are to examine the forms of stereotypes in various media using more varied cultural communication theories, as well as adding references to Chinese ethnic identity and stereotypes in it for depth and novelty of research.

Abstract

The phenomenon of fan culture is currently occurring in various aspects of humanity, both cultural, social, economic, political, and entertainment. The fan culture phenomenon was formed because of a set of norms originating from the fans themselves. However, fan culture is slowly experiencing changes in fandom activities. The Indonesian ARMY fandom is known as a loyal fan of BTS, it is not uncommon for them to show their fanatical behavior by often posting everything about BTS. This research aims to find out what ARMY's motivation is for following BTS, what activities occur, and what forms of fanaticism are expressed on Instagram. Several theories are used to examine this phenomenon, including the Bandwagon Effect Theory, Parasocial Relationship Theory, and Participatory Culture Theory. The method used is descriptive qualitative with a phenomenological approach that focuses on the experiences of the informants. To dig up in-depth information from informants, researchers used in-depth interview techniques (in dept interviews). The results of this research show that ARMY's motivation for following BTS can be explained as coming from the circle or joining the group and the interest comes from themselves. ARMY's motivation for liking BTS can also be explained by the way individuals like or love their idols because of the physical factors they display. The activities on social media can create a sense of intimacy, feelings of connection, friendship, and identification with media figures. Active activities that are usually carried out by informants can be shown by giving likes, replying to comments, and sending messages on Instagram as well as re-sharing uploads about BTS. Several activities carried out by the informant indirectly made the informant feel closer to ARMY, which was part of a social relationship. Expressions of fanaticism can be shown in various ways on Instagram, namely by watching concerts, creating short video content about BTS at concerts, uploading concert photos, creating merchandise unboxing content to immortalize, and collecting merchandise, starting from albums, photocards, clothes, hats, etc. and other trinkets, are part of the indicators of participatory culture, namely producing, reading and writing.
