Abstract

Make a Match method employed by Curran (1994) has some advantages in teaching especially reading comprehension in English. Thus, the purposes of this study are examining the effectiveness of make a match in teaching reading comprehension that is measured from the students’ achievement and the students’ attitude which is compared to the achievement. This study used mixed method of convergent parallel design combining quantitative (Quasi experimental) and qualitative. The data was gained from test (pre-test and post-test), interview and observation. The result of this research showed that “Make a Match” method was effective to teach reading comprehension especially in reading report text. Based on the post-test result of the reading comprehension achievement of the students who are taught using “Make a Match” method (experimental group) is significantly higher than those who are taught without using “Make a Match” method (control group). The achievement was affected by the students’ attitude that they were motivated by showing their enthusiasm and participation when “Make a Match” method was applied

Abstract

The role of lecturers in designing the teaching materials is very decisive successful learning and learning process through a teaching material. Teaching materials can also be interpreted as any form of materials arranged systematically that allows students to learn independently and are designed according to the applicable curriculum. The teaching material is unique and specific to achieve the learning objectives. Culture is a method for pre-service teachers to transform the results of observation into form and creative teaching material. The problem is appointed how the design of the teaching material through local wisdom as a form of independent curriculum application used by pre service teachers and lecturers in designing learning design that supports the independent freedom curriculum in the digital era. Research is in classroom action research. The research data is a design of teaching material in the form of learning design. The data sources were pre-service teachers who took the Micro Teaching course with 20 pre-service teachers as class of 2019 in academic year 2021/2022. Culture is also considered as a teaching material in the teaching and learning process. The application of E-PUB as the device of teaching material. The data collection technique is observation, documentation, and interview. The research instrument uses two aspects, namely: skill in arranging lesson plan and learning practice. The indicators of success are: (a) material understanding, (b) curriculum understanding, (c) learning practice, and (d) personality. The result of cycle I, 75% in sufficient category so it needs to continue to the next cycle. The result of cycle II is 91,66% is in very good category, 6,67 % is in good category and only one student is in fairly good category that is successful in cycle II in applying E-PUB.

Abstract

This study aims to measure the effectiveness of using the traditional game "engklek" for teaching English vocabulary mastery of grade 6 students at SDN Mlaten, Mojokerto. This research used a quantitative approach with a one group pretest-posttest design. The research sample consisted of students in grades 6A and 6B at SDN Mlaten. Data was collected through pretest and posttest to measure students' vocabulary mastery before and after intervention. Data analysis was conducted using paired t-test statistical test to determine the significance of the value results. The results showed that there was a significant change in students' English vocabulary mastery after participating in learning using the traditional game "engklek". The average score of the pretest was 56.73 and the average score of the posttest was 82.65. The test carried out also produced positive results because the sig level. is below or less than alpha (0.00 < 0.05). This has implications for rejecting the null hypothesis (H0) and accepting the alternative hypothesis (Ha). The use of the traditional game "engklek" has proven effective for teaching English vocabulary mastery at primary school.

Abstract

This study addresses the critical gap in utilizing YouTube as an ICT tool to enhance pronunciation skills among seventh-grade students in Mojokerto. Grounded in multimedia learning theory, the research employs a descriptive qualitative approach to examine the impact of YouTube-based pronunciation lessons. Findings reveal that the teacher's strategy of creating and implementing pronunciation videos on YouTube significantly improved students' pronunciation skills and was perceived as highly effective by the learners. These results underscore the transformative potential of digital platforms like YouTube in revolutionizing English language education, particularly in pronunciation.

Abstract

English Language Learner might be good in English mainly on grammar, but that doesn’t determine that they are good in transforming information from source language to target language or so called translation. Translation is necessary since it is crucial for individuals who are not fluent in English. This research used descriptive qualitative in analyzing translation techniques and readability. The data sources were the English and Indonesian versions of a review text regarding the Harry Potter film series. The text was translated into Indonesian by nine ELLs (English students at Islamic University of Majapahit). The data were gathered by note-taking procedures and then evaluated using content analysis methods. Three readers served as raters, evaluating the readability of the translated review content. According to the findings, the ELLs used 13 techniques, the most dominant of which was amplification (22.81%), followed by reduction (20.80%) and borrowing. The ELLs' translation text had a high readability score (score 3) ranging from 23.14% to 0.59%. This data reveals that ELLs provided readable translation results on average. Furthermore, the average readability value has been classified as highly readable.

Abstract

The beneficial impacts of both extensive reading and digital project have been proved by some scholars to improve the students’ competencies. Besides, the environmental crisis in today’s era also needs to be executed. This research explains how ecopedagogy extensive reading and digital storytelling project stimulates students’ creativity and enhances reading encouragement as well as environmental awareness during the learning process. Thirty-six senior high school students were involved in this study. The data were obtained from students’ writing artifacts, classroom observations, and interviews. Employing qualitative case study, the results reveal that ecopedagogy extensive reading help senior high school students discover, express, and compose idea as well as cultivate their creativity in writing narratives. Specifically, the ecopedagogy approach used help students be aware of environmental problem and express the solution in their writing. This study recommends that using both extensive reading activities and digital writing projects is influential in enhancing students reading motivation, writing ability, and creativity.

Abstract

Hasil wawancara dengan Kepala SMK Hasyim As’ari Mojokerto diperoleh belum pernah ada kegiatan pendampingan bagi Bapak/Ibu guru dalam menyusun soal AKM. Guru-guru juga mengeluh kesulitan dalam memahami AKM dan bagaimana cara menyusun soal berbasis AKM. Sehingga dilaksanakan pengabdian ini yang bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kompetensi guru SMK Hasyim Asy’ari dalam menyusun asesmen pembelajaran kurikulum merdeka berbasis Asesmen Kompetensi Minimum (AKM). Kegiatan pengabdian ini terdiri dari tahapan persiapan, implementasi dan evaluasi. Pelaksanaan kegiatan dilakukan mulai tanggal 7 s/d 11 Juni 2024. Berdasarkan hasil pengabdian diperoleh respon positif dari peserta baik dari aspek materi yang disampaikan, metode pelatihan dan narasumber. Respon peserta sangat antusias dan menerima materi dengan baik. Hal ini ditunjukkan oleh semua peserta bertanya perihal yang belum dipahami secara langsung. Adanya kegiatan pelatihan ini diharapkan dapat menyusun soal berbasis AKM secara mandiri dan menerapkan dalam pembelajaran baik tes formatif maupun sumatif untuk melatih kemampuan siswa dalam menyelesaikan soal berbasis AKM

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the representation of multicultural values in senior high school English textbooks and elucidate how these values align with the eight characters of education. The theoretical framework guiding the analysis of the textbooks is based on Fairclough's theory of critical discourse analysis. The findings unveiled the presence of four core multicultural values within the textbooks, encompassing (1) Acceptance and appreciation of cultural diversity, (2) Respect for human dignity and universal human rights, (3) Responsibility to the world community, and (4) Respect for the earth. Additionally, the examination identified six character education values grounded in Pancasila, namely (1) Religious, (2) Tolerance, (3) Patriotism, (4) Friendly/communicative, (5) Environmental care, and (6) Social care. Abstract

In the 21st century, technological progress has revolutionized education, emphasizing the 5Cs (communication, communities, connections, comparisons, and culture) in English language teaching. This evolution presents challenges for educators to innovate learning methods, including Project-Based Learning that integrates technology and cultural elements. This study explores students' perspectives on a writing project that combines extensive reading and narrative writing using Book Creator, focusing on the impacts and cultural aspects. Using a qualitative case study design, data was gathered through interviews and analyzed with thematic analysis. The participants were fifteen second-semester students. The findings show that, according to the students, a culture-based writing project with technology integration requires structured processes to help develop ideas. This approach not only improves writing skills but also enhances cultural understanding. The study suggests that the learning model, along with its positive outcomes and contributing factors, could provide a valuable framework for university-level writing courses. Abstract

Pembelajaran di abad ke-21 dengan kemajuan teknologi yang pesat mendorong dunia pendidikan untuk melaksanakan pembelajaran khususnya bahasa Inggris dengan konsep 5Cs (communication, communities, connections, comparisons, dan culture). Hal ini memberikan tantangan tersendiri bagi pendidik untuk melakukan inovasi dalam pembelajaran, salah satunya adalah melalui pembelajaran berbasis proyek dengan integrasi teknologi dan budaya. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan perspektif mahasiswa terkait proses pengalaman proyek menulis melalui Aplikasi Book Creator untuk menunjang kreativitas dan berfikir kritis, dampak dan faktor –faktor dalam kegiatan menulis teks naratif budaya lokal digital melalui Book Creator ke mahasiswa. Penelitian kualitatif ini menggunakan desain penelitian studi kasus dengan menggunakan metode wawancara dalam pengambilan data. Analisis data dilakukan dengan menggunakan thematic analysis. Partisipan dalam penelitian kami adalah lima belas mahasiswa semester dua (2). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa menurut mahasiswa kegiatan proyek menulis berbasis budaya dan melalui Book Creator memerlukan proses atau tahapan penulisan untuk mempermudah siswa dalam mengembangkan ide. Selain itu, kegiatan tersebut juga memberikan dampak yang tidak hanya dalam keterampilan berbahasa inggris, akan tetapi juga dalam hal pengetahuan dan kesadaran berbudaya serta kreativitas dan berfikir kritis. Model pembelajaran dalam proses penulisan serta dampak positif bisa menjadi rekomendasi untuk pembelajaran mata kuliah writing di tingkat universitas. This brings challenges for educators to do innovation in learning, one of them is by implementing Project-based Learning together with the integration of technology and culture. Therefore, this current research aims to explain students’ perspectives in their experience of writing project process, the impacts, and factors of culture-based narative writing by using Book Creator. This qualitative research employed case study research by using interview method in collecting the data. Thematic analysis was applied to analyze the data. The participants are fifteen students of second semester students. The results of this research proves that based on students’ views, culture-based writing project using technology need processes or stages to make students easy to develop ideas. Besides, it also gives positive impacts not only to students’ writing skill but also to students’ cultural knowledge. The learning model in the process of writing, the positive impacts and factors can be recommended as a learning activity in writing course in university level.
