Abstract

This study focuses on board race games in which students of the English Education Department in the first years at UIN Alauddin Makassar can improve vocabulary memories. This study is planned in the first year of students from the UIN Department of English Education to discover the efficiency of the use of Board Race Games to develop their vocabulary. The study used a quasi-experimental method of two before and after the test classes. In this analysis there were 2 variables; they are independent (Using Board Race Games) and contingent (Memorization of Vocabulary). This research instrument is a test aimed at evaluating the students' success in vocabulary memory. The research is performed both before and after testing. In the post-test, the analysis of the mean score between the test class and the control class has ensured whether the technique is successful.

Abstract

 The aim of this study was to identify the types of technological tools and applications used by students with visual impairment at SLBA-A Yapti Makassar and analyze the students' perception and willingness in using various means of technology in their EFL Classroom. The questionnaires and interviews were used to perform the study methods in which the researcher used Google form that sent to students via WhatsApp feature. Despite the challenge of visual impairment faced by students in integrating technology in the classroom, the results showed that students have positive attitudes about the use of those technology and applications.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the phenomenon of language shift among the noble teenagers of mambalan Village. Research has been carried out with the noble teenagers as the participants of this research. To improve understanding of the complexity of this research, this research used descriptive qualitative method by using some tools in collecting the data such as, questionnaires, interview, data recording, note taking and observation. After obtaining the data, the data analyzed by Gathering and understanding data transcription carefully, coding the data transcription word per word and displaying the words into the relevant conversation. The study found that there is language shift occurred among the noble teenagers of mambalan village. The finding is strengthened by vocabularies and sentences which shifted from high Sasak language to low Sasak language.

Abstract

The study is to reveal the significant different between the learning in Vocational School and in general Senior High School. The appropriate teaching-learning processes are based on their needs. The data in this study were qualitative descriptive data obtained through interviews and questionnaires. The questionnaires were distributed to the students and alumni of computer and network engineering program students. The data analyzed qualitatively. The aim of this study was to identify some factual information about the needs of vocational students in learning English, especially in the English-language skills (Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing) and some of language components in English (Grammar & Vocabulary), and to analyze the conformity between the content of English textbooks with the vocational students’ needs. The subjects in this study were the vocational students and English textbooks, both SBC and Curriculum 2013 edition, of 4 (four) SMK which organized the TKJ department in Mataram. The results showed that the needs of students towards learning English is to meet the academic professions and the future needs of the students, which involved the skills of the language and some of the language components. Whereas in the case of conformity between the content of the English textbooks and the vocational students’ needs, it was found that the English textbooks was more focused on describing the English language competences generally and not directed to the Department of TKJ itself.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine whether or not using the Think pair-share strategy could enhance students' speaking performance with visual impairments Grade XI of SLB-A Yapti Makassar in the academic year of 2020/ 202. This study was pre-experimental research in which the TPS strategy treated only one class. The data were qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative data were obtained by observing the teaching and learning process during the implementation of the TPS strategy and interviewing the students about this strategy. Meanwhile, the quantitative data were gained by assessing the students’ speaking skills through the pre-test and post-test. The instruments for collecting the data were the speaking rubric, observation guidelines, and interview guidelines. The results showed that the TPS strategy effectively improved the students’ speaking skills of visually impaired students. There are different significant scores on the speaking performance of students on pretest and posttest. The frequency and percentage of student scores in specific categories indicating post-test results are higher than pre-test results. Nonetheless, the TPS strategy also has the drawbacks where it was very time consuming during the implementation since students need to be dealt with the given lesson and the screen reader.

Abstract

The Prince and The Pauper is one of great novels written by a famous American author, Mark Twain. The novel tells about some discrimination experienced by two main characters who were born at the same time and with similar appearance. The objectives of the writing is to investigate the kinds of the discrimination reflected by the two major characters and to elaborate the way the characters resolve the problem of discrimination. In performing the analysis, the writer utilized structural approach focusing on the intrinsic elements of literary works which are inherent in the novel. The primary data concerned text analysis that accounted primarily for literary text of the novel. This was then analyzed by means of qualitative social constructivism interpretative paradigm. Results of analysis demonstrated that social class influences the discrimination, the second was that appearance influences the discrimination, and the third was that the education also influences the existence of discrimination. Tom Canty who was born within poor family got used to deal with the discrimination. It is because he has experienced the discrimination since he was born to the world. While Edward Tudor even though he finds it difficult at the beginning to deal with discrimination finally he could afford to adjust himself with the condition. The latter had much lesson to learn from the hardship.

Abstract

The problem in this research are: Does speakmate influence students speaking performance at English Department, and how is students’ self-confidence of having speakmate on students’ speaking performance. This research aims to know the effect of speakmate on students’ speaking performance and know students’ self-confidence to speak mate. This research was a quantitative approach by applying experimental method of quasi-experimental design. The population was all of eight-semester college students , class C and class D who enrolled in academic year 2017/2018. The sample was taken by the. The researcher used purposive sampling, 10 students in experimental group and 10 students in the control group. The intrument used in this research was pretest and posttest in experimental group and control group in the form of speaking test. The finding indicated that the mean score of paired students with their speakmate of the experimental group in pretest is 60.66 in moderate category and the mean score in posttest is 77.33 in the good category. while in the control group, the mean score in pretest is 60.66 in moderate category an the mean score in posttest is 64.66 in the moderate category. The result of hypothesis analysis indicated that tcount is 2.905 is more significant than t-table is 2.101. it means that Ho is rejected and H1 is accepted. Based on the calculation of the t-test above, it can be concluded that speakmate influence students speaking performance. Majority of students show their agreements that speakmate influence students’ speaking performance.

Abstract

This research discussed about translating cultural taboo words Get Hard movie. The aim of this research is to explain the translation strategies of taboo words. This research focused on Batistella’s theory about types of taboo words that are Epithet, Profanity, Vulgarity, and Obscenity, and Karjalainen’s theory about motives of using taboo words that are Psychological motive, Linguistic motive and Social motive. This research applied descriptive qualitative method in revealing data. In collecting the data, the rsearcher used note taking as instrument in order to get the valid data. As the result of the research, it was found there were four types of taboo words and three motives of using taboo words in Get Hard movie. The most common types and motives of using taboo words in Get Hard movie is Epithets and Psychological motive.
