Abstract

Abstract

A study aiming at comparing the effectiveness of seed extract of Phaleria papuena Warb and chemical insecticides for controlling beet armyworm pest (Spodoptera exigua Hubner) at the onion crops has been conducted. The experiment was set up by using a completely randomized design (CRD) with five treatments and tree replicates. The treatments applied were: without insecticide application as a control (P0), botanical insecticide, Phaleria papuena extract 2% (P1), 4% (P2), and 6% (P3), and chemical insecticide, prevathon 50 SC (P4). Variables measured were Spodoptera exigua population density and intensity of pest infestation. Results showed that application of botanical  and chemical insecticides significantly reducing the population density and the infestation of Spodoptera exigua. Effectiveness of Phaleria papuena extract 6% (P3) and prevathon (P4) was not significantly different in controlling Spodoptera exigua. In average, the application of Phaleria. papuena extract 6% (P3) and prevathon (P4) reduced population density at 9.4% and 9.3%, respectively, and infestation intensity of Spodoptera exigua 37.8% and 36.7%, respectively. These results suggest that the seed extract of Phaleria papuena is highly potential to be developed as botanical insecticide. Key Words : Botanical insecticides, Phaleria papuena, Spodoptera exigua.

Abstract

Diamondback moth P. xylostella attack on cabbage crop represents one of the main constraints in the crop development in Donggala regency Central Sulawesi.  Plant extracts as insecticide to control the pest can be developed to overcome the constraint. The research aimed at determining the effectiveness of various plant extracts to suppress P.xylostella . The research was conducted in       a central plantation of cabbage in Nupa Bomba, Tawaeli sub district or Donggala regency, from March to October 2008.  This research used a Randomized Block Design with 5 treatments: K0 = Control (water), K1 = Widuri extract, K2 = Srikaya extract, K3 = Dringo extract and K4 = matador 25 EC insecticide. Each treatment was repeated 4 times giving 20 experimental units. The experimental  parameter observed were (i) density of larva population, and (ii) crop weight per plot. Data were analysis using analysis of variance, whether the treatments were significant, advanced analysis of Duncan Multiple Range Test at 5% significant level was used.  The research results showed that the various plant extracts have significant effect on population density of the larva diamondback moth (P.xylostella) and the cabbage weight.  The largest number of dead larvae  was found in K3 treatment K3 (extract of Dringo leaf).  In the same treatment, the cabbage weight per crop was also higher than any other treatment.

Abstract

Maize is an important commodity after rice that gets priority in increasing food security in Indonesia. The emergence of Invasive Spodoptera frugiperda pests in Indonesia is a threat to the sustainability of maize production in Central Sulawesi. The use of synthetic insecticides to control these pests has various negative impacts. To reduce the negative impact, botanical insecticides can be used. The problem in the use of botanical insecticides is that farmers do not know the effective plant extract control S. Fugiperda. The community service program aims to accompany farmers to develop the extract of Calotropic gigantea, Vitex negundo, and Ageratum conyzoides. Implementation method with the participatory action program approach with stages: counseling and training, technology design, extract application demonstration, observation of S. frugiperda attack intensity, and community assistance. The results show that farmers can make and apply plant extracts C. gigantea, V. negundo and A. conyzoides. The three types of plant extracts can suppress the intensity of S. frugiperda attacks. Extract C. gigantea suppresses S. fugiperda attacks (6.71% to 4.04% on 35 HST, and 3.35% to 1.7% on 42 HST), Extract V. negundo (6.71% to 4, 62% and 3.35% to 2.43%) and extract A. conyzoides (6.71% to 4.99% and 3.35% to 2.43%). Thus, the three types of plant extracts have the potential as effective botanical pesticides to control S. frugiperda

Abstract

Calotropis gigantea produces secondary metabolites. Some toxicity tests on several pest species had been conducted, yet the most susceptible pest species towards C. gigantea extract is still unknown. This study aims to determine the susceptible insect species and study the behavior of susceptible insects to C. gigantea extract. The test methods used in this research were leaf dipping and spraying upon four insect pest species of different orders (Bactrocera carambolae [Diptera: Tephritidae], Nilapavata lugens [Hemiptera: Delphacidae], Sitophilus zeamais [Coleoptera: Curculionidae], and Plutella xylostella [Lepidoptera: Plutellidae]). The concentration used to determine susceptible insects was 25 g.L-1 and control. Deterrence test of susceptible insects using a choice test and no-choice for 1.5 hours observed every five minutes. Five replication were used for each concentration. Behavioral test of susceptible insects using dietary toxicity test. Five bok choy leaf disc was immersed into solutions for 1 minute and air-dried on a petri dish. Observations were carried out for 12 hours with an observation period of every 1.5 hours. A leaf dipping test for 12 hours with an observation period of every 1.5 hours using the feed method. The concentrations used were 12.5 µgL-1and control. The concentration used was the toxicity test of C. gigantea leaf extract 25, 12.50, 6.25. 3.12, 1.56, 0.78, 0.39, 0.19, 0.09, 0.04 µgL-1. P. xylostella was considered a more susceptible test insect towards C. gigantea leaf extract than B. carambolae, N. lugens, and S. zeamais. C. gigantea leaf extract showed a toxic and feeding deterrent to P. xylostella larvae. The LC50 value of C. gigantea extract against P. xylostella by dipping was 16.9 µg.l-1 and 18.5 µg.l-1 by spray. The components of C. gigantea leaf extract consist of alkaloid, tannin, phenol, flavonoid, saponin, and terpenoid. The result of the research showed that C. gigantea leaf extract has a toxic and deterrent substance against P. xylostella and potential to control P. xylostella.
