Abstract

Enterococcus faecalis is a gram positive bacterium which is commonly found in dental root canal endodontic failure. Neem leaf has several active substances such as flavonoids, tannins and sterols which act as an antibacterial. The purpose of this research is to determine the effect of neem leaf extract on the growth of Enterococcus faecalis in vitro.The research was an experimental research, used the posttest only group design. In this research there were five treatment groups (100%, 80%, 60%, 40% and 20%) and two control groups (control + 2, 5% NaOCl and control – sterile distilled water). The diffusion methods were used with calculates diameter zone inhibition of the Enterococcus faecalis bacteria in media MHA by vertically, horizontally, and longitudinally passing through the disc. This research used statistical analysis of One Way Anova that follwed with LSD Post Hoc test.The results mean of inhibition zone diameter of bacteria of Enterococcus faecalis in the treatment group (100%, 80%, 60%, 40% and 20%) in a row 26,38; 22,77; 19,74; 0; 0 and group control + and control – in a row 17 and 0. The One Way Anova test value obtained p<0, 05 means that there were differences in the effect of the inhibition produced by the neem leaf extract. The Post Hoc test value obtained p < 0,05 in the concentration of 100% with concentration 80% and 60% which means there was a significant difference among Neem leaf extracts.The result of the research showed that extract of neem leaf (Azadirachta indica) has an influence on the growth of bacteria Enterococcus faecalis and there were differences in inhibition zone diameter in a range of concentrations. Keyword : neem leaf extract (Azadiractha indica extract), Enterococcus faecalis, in vitro

Abstract

Dental caries is a dental hard tissue disease that often occurs especially in preschool children. One of the many factors cause dental caries in preschool children is the role of mother. The importance of housewife role which was emulated by their children particularly dental health can the level of children caries. The aim of this study is to determine the relationship of housewife behavior towards dental caries status of preschool children in the Kelurahan Pedurungan Kecamatan Pedurungan Tengah of Semarang.This research used analytic methods with cross-sectional observational study. The subject of this research was preschool children in kindergarten Tunas Kekancan Mukti and Islamic kindergarten Berlian totaling 82 childrens and 82 mothers. Data collection was obtained through examination of caries teeth of children and housewives behavior was obtained by using questionnaires that its validity has been tested, and then processed. Data analysis includes descriptive analysis and hypothesis test using Pearson Product Moment Correlation test.The result showed that 31,7% houswives belongs to bad behavior score criterion, 43,9% belongs to moderate behavior score criterion and 24,4% belongs to good behavior score criterion. The average housewives behavior is sufficient criteria. Because the data was not normal, the Spearman Rho test was used and found that there is a correlation between housewives behavior towards caries of preschool children. Data analysis of the relationship was not normal so used Spearman Rho test.The result of this research can be conclude that there is a relation between housewives behavior towards caries preschool children in the Kelurahan Pedurungan Kecamatan Pedurungan Tengah of Semarang. Keywords : housewife behavior, dental caries preschool childrens, caries status of preschool children

Abstract

Chitosan is a natural biopolymer derived from chitin polysaccharides which has amine functional groups that able to lyse bacteria so it can functioning  as an antibacterial. The aim of this study is to determine the difference between the inhibition of chitosan with a combination of antibiotics metronidazole-amoxicillin against Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans causes periodontitis aggressive.This research method used laboratory experimental in vitro by disc diffusion method. The research sample used pure cultures of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans. There were 6 groups of materials, chitosan solution with a concentration of 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, 2%, distilled water with a combination of antibiotics and six times repetition. The data analysis technique used in this study was the One-Way ANOVA test with a probability of p <0.05, then post hoc test was used to determine the  differences effectiveness among variables.The results showed an average inhibition zone formed on the chitosan solution of 0.5%, 1%, 1.5% and 2% were of 10.53 mm, 15.47 mm, 17.50 mm and 19.35 mm . While the average inhibition zone of 11.03 mm antibiotic combination. In the post hoc test data note that only 0.5% chitosan group with a combination of antibiotics metronidazole-amoxicillin which has no significant difference with p value: 0.371 (p <0.5).The survey results revealed chitosan solution has the ability to inhibit the growth of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans causes periodontitis aggressive line with increasing concentration. The effectiveness of chitosan with the lowest concentration of 0.5% is almost the same as the effectiveness of a combination of antibiotics and chitosan solution with a concentration of 1%, 1.5% and 2% had a strong antibacterial effectiveness that chitosan can be used as an alternative antibacterial aggressive periodontitis. Keywords: Chitosan, Combination Antibiotics, Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, aggressive periodontitis

Abstract

Noni fruit (Morinda citrifolia, Linn) consists of antibacterial compound of phenolic. The phenolic derivatives of noni fruit are alizarin, antrakuinon, and acubin, these derivatives can kill bacteria by damaging cell membrane and protein denaturation. The aim of this study is to determine the effectiveness of antibacterial noni fruit extract in killing bacteria Enterococcus faecalis.The study was conducted by making various concentrate of noni fruit extract, that is 100%, 50%, 25%, 12,5%, and 6,25%, and cresophene as the positive control. Testing samples of the bacterium Enterococcus faecalis suspension by putting a disc that has been soaked in various concentrations extract and cresophene on a petri dish, and then incubated for 24 hour, followed with measurement of kiling zone (light zone) around the discs using calipers.The average killing zones formed in extracts 100%, 50%, 25%, 12.5%, 6.25% and cresophene respectively were 13.9 mm, 9.6 mm, 7.3 mm, 6.4 mm , 6mm, and 27.1 mm. The data obtained were tested with One Way Anova and gained a result that there was a difference in the treatment group with significance of 0.000.It can be concluded that noni fruit extract was effective in killing bacteria Enterococcus faecalis.The higher concentration of noni fruit extract, more effective in killing bacteria Enterococcus faecalis. Keyword: antibacterial, noni fruit extract, killing zone of Enterococcus faecalis.

Abstract

Carbohydrates and protein can be used to inhibit S. mutans as a bacteri causes caries. Both nutrients can be found in cow’s or soy milk. The aim of the study is to know the difference in effectiveness between the cow’s milk and soy milk on the Streptococcus mutans growth.The research was designed by group post test only. The independent variables were preparation of cow’s milk and soy milk. The dependent variable was the S. mutans growth measured from the inhibition zone diameter around the Muller Hinton Agar Plate. Data were analyzed by One-way anova.Result of this study showed that the inhibition zone diameter in cow’s milk concentration 80% and 100% were 5.26 mm and 6.17 mm, while in the soy milk were 12.61 mm and 15.11 mm. One-way anova results p = 0.000 explained that cow’s milk and soy milk have a significant difference to the S. mutans growth. Post hoc test showed that soy milk 100% was the most powerful in inhibition of S. mutans growth.The inhibition of soy milk and cow’s milk on the growth of S. mutans tends to increase according to the high concentrations that were used. Key words: cow milk, soy milk, Streptococcus mutans

Abstract

Background: Background: The number of patients with periodontal disease in Indonesia is estimated to continue to increase yearly. 4.79% or 34614 people had healthy periodontal tissue, while 95.21% or 687715 people had unhealthy periodontal tissue. Clamshell waste containing chitosan can be utilized, considering that interest in sources of raw materials derived from waste is increasing. Chitosan has a dual function, which is osteoinductive because it contains growth factors that provide growth for osteoblast cells.Methods: A true experimental laboratory study with a post-test-only control group design was conducted on 30 Wistar rats and divided into two groups: the 0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate group and the chitosan group of scallop shells (Amusium Pleuronectes). The increase in the number of osteoblasts was compared and analyzed.Results: The results showed that the average in the control group on days 7, 14, and 21 was 1, 3.20, 8.80, while in the treatment group on days 7, 14, and 21, it was 12.2, 21.8, and 25. Based on the One Way Anova test results, a p-value of 0,000 (p <0.05) was obtained, meaning a significant difference in the average number of osteoblast cells in each study group.Conclusion: This study concludes that there is an increasing effect of alveolar bone osteoblasts from chitosan in scallop shell extract (Amusium Pleuronecte) in Wistar rats with periodontitis.

Abstract

ABSTRACTBackground: The healing of wounds in the lip region is impeded by the fact that chewing food and speaking can exert pressure and attract the wound. Rosella flowers were chosen because they contain anti-inflammatory flavonoids, anthocyanins, tannins, and saponins, as opposed to chemical medications for wound healing that often induces negative effects. Purpose: This study's objective was to assess the influence of 15% roselle flower extract (Hibiscus sabdariffa L) in a paste formulation on the expression of IL-6 and TNF Alpha during the incision wound healing phase. Method: The method is experimental analytic research with post-test-only control group design. There were two groups: control group and the treatment group. Each group contains 3 Rattus Norvegicus. They were incisions in the upper labial mucosa using blade with a length of 5 mm and a depth 1 mm. Roselle flower extract (Hibiscus sabdariffa L) 15% was applied two times per day for three days in treatment group. After the treatment, the rats were sacrificed to check the expression of IL-6 and TNF Alpha using the Immunohistochemistry method. Result: The results of the analysis of the ANOVA-test show that for TNF Alpha expression it has a significant value (p) of 0.054 or p > 0.05, meaning that there is no significant difference. Meanwhile, the IL-6 expression obtained a significant value (p) of 0.009, meaning that there was a significant difference between the control and treatment groups. Conclusion: The study concluded that 15% rosella flower petal extract in a paste reduced IL-6 expression during the inflammatory but not TNF Alpha. Keyword : Roselle flower; Interleukin 6 (IL-6); TNF Alpha, Oral mucosa; Wound healing
