Abstract

Code-switching has attracted many studies in recent years especially in non-native English speaking countries. In some parts of Indonesia, code-switching has been the topic of research. This paper particularly seeks to examine the effect of code-switching on Indonesian Medanese student’s speaking confidence and investigate their attitude towards it. A total of 34 students from English Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara were chosen purposely to be involved as the participants in the study. An interview and observation were applied to assess their spoken English skill and examine how they interact with each other throughout the sessions. While the ten item questionnaires with a Likert scale were distributed to students to collate their feedback on the implementation of code-switching. It was then explicitly analyzed based on each indicator of speaking, including vocabulary, grammar, fluency, pronunciation and lecturer’s role. Our findings lead to the conclusion and suggest that code-switching can be harnessed as a technique in enhancing students’ speaking confidence since students think positively towards the implementation of code-switching. Hence, based on our findings, it is recommended that lecturers use English and Indonesian at an interchange to lower proficient students so as to give students better comprehension of grammar rules, structure, pronunciation, and subsequently improve their fluency and confidence in speaking.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the process of developing teaching materials by using Glasser model in the Indonesian language course in FKIP UMSU. The sample of the research is 34-second semester A morning students in the Study Program of Language and Literature of Indonesia, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, University of Muhammadiyah, Sumatera Utara. The questionnaire instrument was used to determine the student's response and activeness to the developed teaching material, the observation sheet used to know the condition of the students in the learning process, and the validation sheet instrument used for the development of teaching materials based on SAP using Glasser model. The result of descriptive research on student's response shows that 100% of students were happy about the teaching materials of Bahasa Indonesia (Teaching Materials, Guided Exercises and Lecture Strategies) and 91.66% of students think that the teaching materials are new to them. After using the teaching materials developed by the researcher and following the teaching and learning activities, students (100%) are interested in following the next lesson, the readability of the language of the learning material is easy to understand (91.66%) and the guidance given by the lecturer is clear (100%). While the self-employed activity is fun for students (91.66%). Students activity in learning activities was shown by their involvement in problem solving, his involvement in carrying out learning tasks, assessing his ability, digging and developing his own knowledge. Based on the validation sheet on the test of learning result 1 obtained information that from the 3 learning objectives formulated in SAP I and SAP II there is 1 learning objectives that have not yet completed. Based on the results of descriptive analysis of the test results of learning 2 it was obtained that the 3 learning objectives formulated in SAP III and SAP IV was finished learning objective.

Abstract

This research uses ethnographic qualitative research. The purpose of this study is to examine the form and meaning of local wisdom contained in traditional Malay games in terms of ecolinguistics and preservation strategies that can be done. The data is in the form of descriptions of body movements in the steps of the game and snippets of song lyrics that show the values of local wisdom. Sources of data were children who played traditional Malay games, actors of Malay tradition, and traditional leaders. The data collection method used is the listening and speaking method with note-taking techniques through observation and interviews. The data analysis technique used is data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that the game of injit injit semut, lu lu cina buta, tam tam buku, and wak wak udin has a form of local wisdom in the form of words, namely, poetry that is sung when playing and actions in the form of body movements that are reflected in the steps of the game. The meaning contained in the forms of local wisdom is described in four values, namely 1) the value of togetherness, 2) the value of education, 3) the value of sharing, and 4) the religious value. The game can be preserved by making game applications that can be downloaded on mobile phones with the same original game, and it can be introduced again in educational institutions, so that there will be more research on local wisdom on traditional games.

Abstract

Mantra Jamuan Laut is spells or words used by a sea-handler in the process of Ritual Ceremony among Malay society in Kabupaten Serdang Bedagai, North Sumatra - Indonesia. This study deals with translation technique, ideologies and quality of the translated text of sea repast incantation from Malay language into English. There was 82 clauses of translated text as the data. The source of data is the utterances of a sea-handler and FGD. Descriptive qualitative was applied by using Molina and Albir’s theory to find out the translation techniques meanwhile the theory of Nababan & Machali used to figure out the quality of the translation. Considering the fact that the data which consists of four incantations are translated by five translators, then the results of their translation vary. From the analysis, it was found that there were 11 techniques of 18 applied with literal as the most dominant technique. Thereby the translators embraced foreignization ideology that mainly focuses on the source text. The utilization of foreignization ideology and the use of source language-oriented translation techniques showed that intercultural and thematic knowledge of the translators are insufficient. Since the frequency of literal technique was less than 25%, the quality of translated-text was regarded as ‘fair’.

Abstract

This study seeks to investigate the quality of translation generated by a popular Machine Translation (MT) platform, viz. Google Translate (GT) in translating the content of a Russian flight charterer’s website from English into Indonesian. To analyze the translation quality produced by MT, we compared the original translation of the website texts translated by a human translator and the machine-translated version. The translation quality is limited to the readability level. The texts serving as the data were collected from the menus of a Russian flight chartering service website which was originally translated by an Indonesian translator. An analysis further discovered that the translation produced by MT is divided into two quality categories: less readable and readable. The less readable translation is caused by MT’s inability to adjust to stylistic forms in Indonesian, failure to do adaptation strategy and in some cases, MT tends to follow the same sentence structure of the original text (source text).

Abstract

The aim of study is to investigate tourists’ perspective on English verbal communication of the tour guides at pulau banyak.. This study used descriptive qualitative method in analyzing the data. Verbal Communication consist can be found and use on tourist guide to tourist foreign.  And to reason for the used of communication between researcher and tourists . Tourist Guide are people who provide assistance, information about cultural, historical and contemporary heritage about people organized tours and individual client in educational pleces, Tourist attraction, religious and historical sites, museum,  and in places from other significant interests. And Tourist is person travelling in a certain period in place he visits( Yoeti : 1999 ). Therefore, the tourist need someone to help in giving detail information releted to the place, know as tour guide. That have good verbal communication to tourist understand what tour guide talk about it. it was found that the first tour guide produced (Fair ) for Accuracy, (Fair ) for Fluency and (Very Good  ) for Comprehensibility . and the second tour guide produced (Fair) for accuracy, (Good ) for Fluency and (Very good ) for Comprehensibility. It means the most dominant types of verbal communication that used on the conversation by both tour guide is   Comprehensibility.

Abstract

This study was concerned on the significant effect of the students’ ability in writing procedure text by using think talk write strategy. The research was conducted in quantitative research that used experimental group and control group. The population of this study was 60 students at SMP Sinar Husni Medan. In this study the sample was divided into two groups: the experimental group and the control group.  T-test was used as formula to analyze the data. The data were calculated by using t-test formula. The writer used T-test formula to analyze the data. The data were calculated by using t-test formula. The result of the analysis shows that t-observed (9,35) was higher than t-table (1,67) and the degree of freedom (df) 58. Therefore, the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. There was a significant effect of Think Talk Write (TTW) strategy in writing procedue text

Abstract

SMP Muhammadiyah 61 Tanjung Selamat is located on Jalan Perjuangan No. 18 Dusun II-B Tanjung Selamat, Sunggal sub-district, Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra Province. Tanjung Selamat Village is a suburb of Medan City as well as the border between Medan City and Deli Serdang Regency is a partner school of FKIP UMSU who was accompanied by lecturer facilitators in the Tanoto Foundation PINTAR program for the past 3 years where previously internship had been carried out using the Zoom application as an online learning medium during the pandemic by the previous team in April 2021 to October 2021 at SMP Muhamamdiyah 61 Medan. However, the improvement in teacher skills must also be in line with their ability to provide digital assessments to students, then digital assessment training through the Kahoot and Quiziz applications is the solution offered in this PKM activity. By being provided with digital assessment training based on Kahoot and Quizziz for the teachers of SMP Muhammadiyah 61 Medan, this program is expected to reduce the additional workload of teachers, such as correcting student assignments that are part of the assessment task, such as the final assessment of students not only depending on daily assessments, mid-assessments. semester and end of semester assessment. Quizziz and Kahoot as a form of digital assessment become authentic because the teacher can create contextual question materials and the teacher can insert images and videos from their own recordings into the Kahoot and Quizziz platforms.

Abstract

Implementasi dalam menghantarkan kebijakan dilakukan juga di lingkungan Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (UMSU) salah satunya melalui penilaian implementasi kegiatan Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka dalam program asistensi mengajar. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui sejauh mana penilaian implementasi program asistensi mengajar di UMSU. Metode penelitian yang digunakan yaitu deskriptif kualitatif melalui survei dengan memberikan angket kepada mahasiswa, dosen dan tendik. Instrumen tersebut berupa angket penilaian implementasi kegiatan Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka Program Asistensi Mengajar. Subjek penelitian adalah mahasiswa UMSU peserta Program Kampus Mengajar Angkatan 1, Angkatan 2 dan Angkatan 3. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tingkat kepuasan mahasiswa terhadap program asistensi mengajar berdasarkan fakultas di UMSU menunjukkan skor total sebesar 3,65 artinya secara keseluruhan pelayanan yang diberikan UMSU berada pada level 4 dengan kriteria hasil memuaskan, kepuasan mahasiswa terhadap Kemampuan mahasiswa menyusun perencanaan kegiatan Asisten Mengajar dengan mean sebesar 3.72 yang berada pada kriteria sudah memuaskan, kepuasan mahasiswa terhadap Keterlibatan mahasiswa dalam mengikuti kegiatan akademik, dengan mean sebesar 3.69 yang berada pada kriteria memuaskan, kepuasan mahasiswa terhadap Keterampilan mahasiswa dalam adaptasi teknologi dalam pembelajaran, dengan mean 3.59 berada pada kriteria memuaskan. kepuasan mahasiswa terhadap keterlibatan mahasiswa dalam mengikuti kegiatan non akademik berada pada kriteria sudah memuaskan (3.58) AbstractThis Implementation in delivering policies was also carried out within the Muhammadiyah University of North Sumatra (UMSU), one of which is through an assessment of the implementation of the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) activities in the teaching assistance program. This study aims to determine the extent to which the implementation of the teaching assistance program at UMSU was assessed. The research method used was descriptive qualitative through a survey by giving questionnaires to students, lecturers and staff. The instrument was in the form of a questionnaire assessing the implementation of the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka Teaching Assistance Program activities. The research subjects were UMSU students participating in the Campus Teaching Program Batch 1, Batch 2 and Batch 3. The results showed that the level of student satisfaction with the teaching assistance program based on the faculty at UMSU showed a total score of 3.65 meaning that overall the services provided by UMSU were at the level 4 with the criteria of satisfying results, student satisfaction with the ability of students to plan Teaching Assistant activities with a mean of 3.72 which was in the criteria of satisfactory, student satisfaction with student involvement in participating in academic activities, with a mean of 3.69 which is in the criteria of satisfying, student satisfaction with Student skills in adapting technology in learning, with a mean of 3.59 was in the satisfactory criteria. student satisfaction with student involvement in participating in non-academic activities was in the satisfactory criteria (3.58).

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini mengetahui Peran Guru Menggunakan Media Kartu Huruf Untuk Meningkatkan Kemampuan Membaca Permulaan Siswa Di Sanggar Bimbingan Muhammadiyah Kepong Malaysia. Jenis data yang digunakan pada penelitian ini  yaitu penelitian kualitatif. Penelitian menghasilkan data Deskriptif berupa kata-kata tertulis atau lisan dari orang-orang perilaku yang dapat diamati. Adapun subjek penelitian ini adalah Kepala sekolah, Guru dan Siswa. Teknik pengumpulan data dalam penelitian ini menggunakan teknik observasi, wawancara dan dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa penggunaan media kartu huruf sudah cukup baik untuk mengembangkan keterampilan membaca peserta didik kelas 1 Sanggar Bimbingan Muhammadiyah Kepong Malaysia. Lalu setelah dilakukan perbandingan antara penilaian sebelum dan setelah tindakan penggunaan media kartu huruf, dapat disimpulkan bahwa peran guru dalam menggunakan media kartu huruf dinilai berpengaruh positif dan efektif guna meningkatkan kemampuan membaca peserta didik kelas 1 Sanggar Bimbingan Muhammadiyah Kepong Malaysia. Adapun implikasi yang bisa diberikan dari studi ini yaitu penggunaan media pembelajaran berupa kartu huruf menunjukkan adanya peningkatan kemampuan membaca peserta didik kelas 1 Sanggar Bimbingan Muhammadiyah Kepong Malaysia. Adanya beberapa kendala yang dihadapi dapat diatasi dengan berbagai inovasi yang telah dipaparkan pada kesimpulan. Penelitian ini, fokus pembahasan masih di tahap peran guru dalam pengaplikasian media pembelajaran berupa kartu huruf guna mengembangkan keterampilan membaca siswa.
