Abstract

Children were considered weak and lack of experience. The perspectives, nevertheless, have changed; children are competent to deliver their voices. Therefore, there is a need to do research with children so that adults can understand their childhood. The principles of research with children and research with adults might differ. The researchers did qualitative study analysing documents, highlighting the differences between them. Three themes appeared. The first is ethical aspect; children's researchers need to gain consent from children's gatekeepers. The second is rapport building; researchers apply unique strategies, such as role-playing to provide comfort during the research. The last is child-rights based approach; researchers should consider that children's insights can contribute to adults' understanding of children's experiences. This study's practical implication is that it contributes information to potential researchers to apply specific strategies for research with children that might not be applied to research with adults because of their maturity nature.

Abstract

This paper aims to analyse the benefit and constraints of approaches for investigating washback in English language testing. This paper starts with the exploration of the concept of washback in English language testing. The notion of washback is related to the effect of testing on learning and teaching. This notion shows that washback research is associated with a causal relationship. A causal relationship might be investigated through quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-method approaches. Each approach may have strengths as well as constraints. This paper concludes that quantitative and qualitative approaches contribute to the investigation of washback in English language testing. However, each approach also has some constraints. This writer concludes that a qualitative approach may suit well to investigate washback in English language testing. This approach may capture in-depth information on how and why teachers and students are affected by language testing in their teaching and learning process. However, the quantitative approach may excel in many participants so that the research results may be generalised. Each approach may contribute to washback research in English language testing; therefore, a mixed-method approach: qualitative and quantitative, is recommended to gain comprehensive finding for investigating washback in English language testing

Abstract

A Continued Professional Development (CPD) in the educational context is a continual program aimed to develop teachers' quality, including English language teachers, in their teaching practices to improve students' academic achievement. A traditional or teacher-centred CPD is criticized for its failure to provide teachers' active participation. Although this program may allow teachers to learn from outside experts, it still fails to meet teachers' and classrooms' needs. The program may not be in line with the challenges and experiences teachers face in their classroom's real teaching practices. Past researchers started to identify effective professional development which invites teachers' active participation. CPD through action research offers English teachers to get involved actively from planning to the program's evaluation so that they can improve their knowledge, English language proficiency and teaching skills that fit the condition and teachers' context. This paper offers a design to develop an action research model of CPD.

Abstract

This paper discussed Indonesian efforts to change the Indonesian educational system from centralization to decentralization. The Indonesian government launched several programmes to support its decentralization policy in education. The programmes were intended to open equal access to education all over Indonesia and minimize the gap among the regions. This paper analysed whether the programmes provided equality and equity to Indonesian citizens in terms of educational access. Finally, this researcher recommended that the Indonesian government gives more attention to the disadvantaged area, for example, poor and remote regions. This may provide equal access to education with good quality in Indonesia. Moreover, the Indonesian central government may allow local authorities to get involved in teacher professionalism programmes. Local authorities may invite successful educators from other regions to learn their successful localized curriculum. Finally, the central government must ensure that local government apply a minimum of 20% of its budgets for education. The funding might help local educational authorities pay teachers' salaries on time as the delay in teacher salaries may affect negatively their work conditions.

Abstract

This study explored the learning strategies and difficulties of visually impaired students. The study involved four students with visual impairment in Pontianak, West Kalimantan Province. The researchers collected data through semi-structured interviews. A qualitative approach was employed in this study. Four informant students took part in this study. All of them were in their secondary education level. The researchers coded the transcription of the interviews. The results showed that visually impaired students preferred to use auditory learning resources and active learning strategies. They perceived these two learning strategies as essential to help them understand the learning materials. Besides, the informant students also claimed that their reading comprehension, self-efficacy and confidence were low. These ideas may facilitate educators to understand what visually impaired students need in their learning and help educators accommodate their teaching in line with what blind students require.

Abstract

Mentoring programs in education are known as the involvement of experienced persons to support students’ learning. Concerning improving literacy, mentoring programs aim to help students understand reading materials and improve their reading enjoyment and behaviors. This research aimed to investigate mentoring programs’ impact on primary students’ reading enjoyment. This study, in particular, intended to probe whether the mentoring programs significantly affected students’ reading enjoyment, whether male and female students differed on their reading enjoyment after getting mentoring intervention and whether the periods of mentoring impacted students’ enjoyment of reading. The study used secondary data of the Time to Read Program, a volunteering program conducted in Northern Ireland held by the Business in the Community in cooperation with Education Authority to promote literacy to local primary school students. The sample students in the secondary data used in this study were 250 eight-to-nine years old students. This study used the independent t-test and the ANOVA test to analyze the data. This study failed to find evidence that mentoring programs increased students’ reading enjoyment and that males and females differed in their reading enjoyment after mentoring intervention. However, this study found evidence that mentoring periods significantly improved primary students’ reading enjoyment.
