Abstract

Pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan sumber daya para pemangku kepentingan di kawasan obek wisata budaya Ciung Wanara Desa Karangkamulyan Kecamatan Cijeungjing Kabupaten Ciamis melalui pelatihan keterampilan bertutur (storytelling) destinasi wisata menggunakan asistensi Whatapps Group.  Khalayak sasaran adalah para pemangku kepentingan yang terdiri dari perwakilan perangkat desa, pengurus harian Paguyuban Kawargian Adat, pengurus harian Bumdes, Juru Pelihara, pemandu, pedagang kios, pedagang kaki lima, pedagang asongan, petugas parkir, pengurus harian Karang Taruna, dan pengurus Museum Ciung Wanara. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan observasi dan interview mendalam menggunakan teknik Diskusi Kelompok Terfokus (Focus Group Discussion). Observasi dilakukan untuk mengamati lebih jauh dan secara langsung kemampuan menyusun cerita untuk menuturkan (storytelling) destinasi wisata budaya Ciung Wanara Karangkamulyan. Hasil observasi baik secara offline dan online berupa tangkap layar, panggilan suara dan pesan suara Whatsapp Group kemudian dianalisa secara detail melalui beberapa tahapan: reduksi data, penyajian menggunakan tabel, reduksi data, tampilan data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Sedangkan hasil Diskusi Kelompok Terfokus (Focus Group Discussion) dianalisa secara tematik dengan beberapa tahapan terlebih dahulu seperti transcribing, coding, categorizing, dan interpreting. Hasil pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini menunjukkan bahwa WhatsApp Group telah menjadi solusi dan media yang memudahkan pemangku kepentingan dalam penguasaan tekhnik bertutur (storytelling) destinasi wisata budaya Ciung Wanara. Keberhasilan peserta pelatihan mencapai 64% dalam memahami materi yang telah disampaikan. Selain itu, asistensi yang diperoleh pemangku kepentingan di kawasan wisata ini adalah pemahaman terhadap materi bertutur (storytelling) termasuk definisi bertutur (storytelling), unsur-unsur bertutur dan pemahaman menyajikan storytelling masing-masing mencapai 55%, sedangkan materi mengenai keunggulan bertutur (storytelling) mencapai 46%.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini dilakukan untuk memberikan bimbingan belajar Bahasa Inggris bagi anak-anak sekolah di Rumah Literasi Banjar menggunakan Smartphone. Khalayak sasaran pengabdian berjumlah 19 orang anak-anak sekolah dari tingkat TK hingga SMA. Mereka dibagi menjadi lima rombongan belajar (rombel). Setiap rombongan belajar memiliki jumlah siswa belajar maksimal 5 orang saja sesuai ketentuan pembelajaran tatap muka di masa kehidupan normal baru Pandemi Covid-19. Pemberian bimbingan belajar Bahasa Inggris dilakukan berdasarkan kebutuhan akan pengenalan Bahasa Inggris untuk tingkat sekolah dasar dan permasalahan yang dihadapi dalam memahami materi tertentu mata pelajaran Bahasa Inggris (SMP/ SMA). Pelaksanaan bimbingan belajar ini dilakukan selama 4 kali pertemuan setiap hari Ahad/ Minggu selama bulan puasa Ramadan 1442 H atau dari tanggal 18 April sampai 9 Mei 2021. Sumber data pengabdian ini diperoleh melalui dairy journal, dokumentasi video (observasi), dan wawancara yang diuraikan secara deskriptif. Hasil kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini menunjukkan bahwa implementasi bimbingan belajar secara tatap muka dilakukan sesuai tingkat sekolah dan sesuai prokes pandemi Covid-19. Selain itu, kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini telah mendapat respon positif karena bimbingan belajar Bahasa Inggris gratis memberikan pengalaman yang berharga bagi anak-anak sekolah dari tingkat Taman Kanak-Kanak (TK) hingga SMA. Kegiatan pengabdian semacam ini selayaknya dilakukan secara berksinambungan dan tentu saja dilakukan dengan mempertimbangkan berbagai sudut pandang keilmuwan. Kata kunci: Bahasa Inggris, bimbingan belajar.

Abstract

The high increase of electronic media supported by internet resulted in accessing all information easily. Concurrently, the requirement of thinking critically intrigued all parties to be involved in the internet environment. This research aimed at investigating whether or not there were significant mean differences of critical thinking ability in writing exposition text between students who were taught by using E-writing method and those who were given traditional method of writing. The study employed quantitative paradigm design with the type of quasi experimental and involved students which was selected purposively and formed into experimental group and control group. The primary data was the result of pre-test and post-test in the form of essays which were scored by the Holistic Critical Thinking Scoring Rubric (HTCR) developed by Facione & Facione (2011). Based on the result of pre-test and post-test, NGain was analyzed through Man Whitney test to find out the significant mean different of students’ critical thinking ability. After being analyzed by using SPSS 23, the Mann Whitney test came up with the accepted hypotheses i.e., there were significant mean differences of critical thinking ability between experiment group and control group, with mean of NGain score for experimental group was higher than control group had. The statistical output of Mann Whitney test obtained implied that students’ critical thinking ability were influenced by E-writing method. The result of the study convinced that E-writing contributed greater improvement in students’ critical thinking ability than the traditional method did. The finding of present study provided evidence for the effectiveness of E-writing in increasing the students’ ability in thinking critically in writing exposition text.

Abstract

Teacher feedback stipulation is a necessity for students especially in the process of writing. It’s become a reflection of their teaching process. The present study, therefore, is aimed at finding out the effectiveness of indirect teacher feedback in reducing students’ grammatical errors in writing recount text, and describing lexico-grammatical aspects of students’ writing that indicate significant progress in error reduction toward indirect teacher feedback as the treatment. The present study implemented a mixed-method with the type of pre-experimental design for the quantitative design and content analysis for the qualitative design. The sample of the present study involved 17 students as the experimental group. Students’ document tests were used to obtain the data. Based on the statistical result, after indirect teacher feedback was implemented on students’ writing recount text especially personal recount text, the t-observed value was higher than t-table value; thereby, the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the alternative hypotheses (H1) was accepted. Thus, the use of indirect teacher feedback is effective in reducing students’ grammatical errors in writing personal recount text. In addition, from the analysis content of students’ document tests, verb tense indicated significant progress in error reduction. Based on the findings, it is recommended for English teachers to apply indirect teacher feedback to reduce students’ grammatical errors, especially in teaching writing so that the students' writing can be improved.Keywords: Indirect Teacher Feedback, Recount Text, Students’ Grammatical Errors, Writing

Abstract

This study aimed at 1) analyzing moves of Application Letter written by Agribusiness students; and 2) language used in Application Letter. The study adopted the descriptive research involving   the third semester students at Agribusiness Department of Agriculture Faculty in a Private University in East Priangan, West Java. The selected participants were 18 students who were asked to write Application Letter (solicited letter); and those document texts were analyzed, particularly, in term of the move structure referring to previous study conducted by Bhatia (1993), Henry and Roseberry (2001), Khan & Tin (2012), and Wijayanti (2017), by using quantitative and qualitative descriptive method. Therefore, the present study provided evidence for description of moves in Application Letter written by Agribusiness students. It consisted of fourteen moves: opening salutation, referring to source  information,  stating  reason,  offering candidature,  introducing  candidature,  promoting candidature, offering candidature, glorifying institution, enclosing document, willingness to action, stressing the fact, offering to provide information, thanking, and closing salutation. However, the move structure was weakened by their inability in producing effective and impressive language used in Application Letter; they still need improving in language aspect such as expression, cohesive, coherence, and spelling. This resulted in necessity of an explicit teaching in writing professional   genre   of   Application   Letter   for   Agribusiness   students.   Further   research   is recommended to investigate the related topic in terms of language aspect.Key words: Agribusiness Students, Application Letter, ESP, Moves Analysis

Abstract

Pentingnya kemampuan komunikasi bahasa Inggris semakin disadari oleh semua pihak, termasuk para petugas parkir di kawasan objek wisata budaya Ciung Wanara, Karangkamulyan. Oleh karena itu, tim pengabdian kepada masyarakat Universitas Galuh melaksanakan pelatihan English Questions, khususnya materi Yes/No Questions dan 5W+1H Questions. Project-based learning diterapkan dalam program ini dengan berprinsip kepada aspek andragogik. Subjek pengabdian berjumlah 6 orang petugas parkir di area objek wisata budaya Ciung Wanara. Pelatihan English Questions yang meliputi pelafalan dan penggunaannya dengan benar dilakukan selama kurun waktu 7 kali pertemuan. Sumber data pengabdian ini diperoleh melalui observasi dan rekaman video yang dianalisis menggunakan teori pendukung secara deskriptif. Sedangkan penilaian kemampuan English Question menggunakan CEFR. Hasil analisis menunjukan bahwa kemampuan bahasa Inggris yang dimiliki para petugas parkir di kawasan objek wisata budaya Ciung Wanara Karangkamulyan semakin signifikan. Mereka mampu membuat pertanyaan dengan berbagai situasi, apabila ada turis asing datang; diantaranya pertanyaan (1)  saat turis datang atau turun dari bus di area parkir; (2) ketika turis hendak  mencari restoran; (3) ketika turis keluar dari restoran; (4) saat turis memasuki area Ciung Wanara; (5) ketika turis  keluar dari area situs; dan (6) saat turis akan segera melanjutkan perjalanan. Keberhasilan ini diharapkan mampu mendongkrak peningkatan kesan positif objek wisata tersebut dari para pengunjunag, terutama turis asing. Dengan demikian, kapasitas para petugas parkir sebagai bagian dari objek wisata budaya Ciung Wanara juga semakin optimal dan para petugas parkir pun dapat meraih keuntungan yang maksimal.

Abstract

Kebutuhan komunikasi bahasa Inggris sebagai dampak dari program Masyarakat Ekonomi Asean (MEA) semakin tinggi sehingga semua kalangan masyarakat menyadari akan pentingnya meningkatkan kemampuan komunikasi menggunakan bahasa internasional tersebut. Sebagai upaya nyata untuk memfasilitasi kepentingan tersebut, Universitas Galuh melalui kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat telah memberikan penyuluhan dengan pelatihan bahasa Inggris menggunakan metode pembelajarn berbasis proyek. Peserta pelatihan ini terdiri dari para pedagang yang tergabung dalam paguyuban Kawargian Adat. Untuk menunjang kegiatan mereka, pelatihan komunikasi Bahasa Inggris ditekankan kepada kegiatan jual beli.  Adapun sasaran yang ingin dicapai melalui pengabdian masyarakat ini adalah meningkatnya motivasi dan kemampuan para pedagang dalam berkomunikasi menggunakan bahasa Inggris, khususnya mengenai cara menawarkan barang dagangan mereka. Untuk mencapai sasaran tersebut, metode pelatihan berbasis proyek (Project-based Learning) telah digunakan dalam kegiatan pengabdian ini. Dengan adanya pengabdian masyarakat ini, selain motivasi, kemampuan bahasa Inggris anggota paguyuban Kawargian Adat telah menunjukan peningkatan. Setelah dilakukan pelatihan bahasa Inggris dengan metode pembelajaran berbasis proyek, mereka mampu mengunakan ungkapan-ungkapan bahasa Inggris dalam kegiatan jual beli dengan turis asing. Ungkapan-ungkapan tersebut terdiri dari offering something to drink and to eat (menawarkan makan dan minum), stating a preference (menyatakan pilihan), dan stating a price (menyatakan harga). Dengan demikian, peningkatan volume penjualan juga dapat tercapai untuk meraih keuntungan yang maksimal bagi para pedagang paguyuban Kawaragian Adat di daerah objek wisata budaya Ciung Wanara Karangkamulyan Kabupaten Ciamis.

Abstract

The use of mobile technology, especially MALL (Mobile Assisted Language Learning) grows popularly in pandemic era. Most of teacher use it to help students while they are learning at home. This study is aimed at interpreting students' perceptions towards the use of English Pronunciation application on students’ self-regulated learning and investigating the use of English Pronunciation application in optimizing their self-regulated learning in learning pronunciation. Researchers applied a qualitative case study as the research design of this study. The data were collected through questionnaires and interviews. This research involved 25 students of the freshman of English Education Program in a private university in Ciamis. The result shows that the students respond positively on the use of English Pronunciation application in learning pronunciation since it helped them in overcoming their problems in learning pronunciation, especially in pandemic era where they situated to learn at home. The results also indicate that the use of English Pronunciation application in learning pronunciation is effective to optimize students’ self-regulated learning.

Abstract

This paper reports on student’s perception on the effect of teaching writing of narrative texts using media movie clips. Movie clip is one kind of audio visual media which is very useful in teaching learning process if the teacher carefully prepares it and then she/he uses it effectively to support the explanation of the lesson.This research uses mixed method design with explanatory type design by means of three data collection techniques : pre test and post test, document test, and interview. The sample of this research was 12 students of ten grade from one Vocational High School in Tasikmalaya. The result of this research shows the significant effect with normality test is 0.63≥ 0.05 so that H0 is accepted. Then value of pretest comes from populations that are normally distributed, and that significant value of post test is 0.15 ≥0.05, so that H0 is accepted. The improvement made by movie clips is an avarage pretest amounting 63.58 and 77.5 for posttest. It means that there is an improvement, and the perception obtained from interview shows a lot of positive comment. Meanwhile, each student has different scores, high and low, that are able to influence how their learning achievement are in the classroom, but they have the same goal in writing class in that they want to write well and correctly. Before writing, they must also have good exercise and skill in order to get correct writing results and to achieve success in this course.Keywords: mixed method. movie clips, writing

Abstract

This research focused on teacher and students’ challenges and strategies in writing narrative text by using Google Classroom in a remote area. This case study was carried out in an Islamic Senior High School in Malangbong Garut. The writer selected the English teacher and 27 students in class XI IPA-1 as the participants of this study. The first conclusion revealed that the teacher and the students faced challenges in teaching and learning of writing narrative text by using Google Classroom in a remote area, especially in grade eleven of an Islamic Senior High School in Malangbong Garut. The second conclusion revealed that the teacher and students used strategies to solve their challenges in teaching and learning of writing narrative text by using Google classroom in a remote area.
