Abstract

This research was purposed to measure the significant difference on the use of video as an authentic material to improve students’ writing skills and investigate the use of video as authentic material in students’ writing skills on recount text. The present study applied cluster random sampling technique that implemented a mixed-method with the type of true-experimental design. A series of pretest-posttest for the quantitative data and interview for the qualitative data were utilized. The sample of the present study employed 30 students as the experimental and control group. The documentation of students’ tests was used to extract the data. The result showed that there was significant difference in students’ writing skills before and after being taught by means of video as an authentic material.  Meanwhile, the interview showed that students with high, middle and low achiever gave positive responses about using video as an authentic material in improving writing recount text. The study concluded that the use of video as an authentic material has contributed a good impact to students’ writing recount text with high, middle and low achiever, although it did not give significant impact in students’ learning outcomes particularly in writing recount text.

Abstract

This paper reports an analysis of students’ perception on the impact e-learning assessment using portfolios on writing engagement. This research employed a case study approach. Questionnaires were used as data collection instruments. The participant of this study was students of Islamic High School of grade 10 in Garut and the data collection was obtained from the questionnaire with EFL Students. The results showed that the use of e-learning assessment through portfolio was very influential on students in collecting assignments. The results also show that the student's perception of e-learning assessment through the portfolio is very influential on students ' writing engagement.

Abstract

In the process of writing, the teacher always provides feedback to students even though it usually takes to do so. Thus, this study was designed to elaborate the use of peer feedback, the type of peer feedback, and students' perceptions of peer feedback to be compared with previous related research. The research site was at a Vocational High School in Ciamis. The data were gathered from observations and documents of students' writing. Then, the questionnaires were handed to 10 students who practice peer feedback in the writing class. The results showed that students used two types of feedback. They were direct feedback and indirect feedback. Furthermore, students' perceptions of peer feedback received a positive response and the most of students agreed that the implementation of peer feedback was more beneficial and it helped them improving their writing.

Abstract

The 21st-century skill has intrigued all stakeholders in the education context and educational practitioners have a great decision to ignite the implementation of critical thinking in the classroom. This brings the present study to be carried out with the aim of exploring 1) the argument analysis of critical thinking demonstrated by the EFL students in writing argumentative text using Instant Messaging; and 2) students' awareness of the relationship among argumentative text, critical thinking, conservation issue and some challenges in experiencing the activity Instant Messaging. The present study involved five EFL students enrolling in Academic writing in the fifth semester. The qualitative case study theory was utilized so that the primary data was obtained by employing screenshots of students' written argumentation and interview (Instants Messaging Interview). The present study came up with evidence that the quality of students' arguments was not contented. The obvious premises and conclusion are not offered to build a good argument. It is to say that a student's ability to write argumentative text as a tool facilitates students' critical thinking and needs more ignition. Consequently, students' ability in thinking critically also needs improvement. Another result reveals that the inclusion of technical support such as internet access and an E-writing device, namely, instant messaging, helped them a lot in making judgments fast. Searching from Google search in one click made them more aware of several issues in a concise time such as the term critical thinking, strategy in writing a good argumentative text, effects caused by plastic and its recommendation, and offering some alternatives for some challenges. Thus, students experienced technical support as a great assistance to attach accurate data for their writing of Argumentative text effectively and efficiently.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini merupakan upaya peningkatan pengetahuan pengenalan Bahasa Inggris untuk tingkat sekolah dasar yang melibatkan isu konservasi. Kegiatan ini melibatkan 34 orang anak-anak SD / MI sederajat yang ada di Kota Banjar dan sekitarnya. Pelaksanaan bimbingan belajar ini dilakukan selama 4 kali pertemuan setiap hari Ahad/ Minggu selama bulan puasa (Ramadhan 1444 H/ 2023 M) dari tanggal 26 Maret, 2 April, 9 April, dan 16 April 2023. Perolehan data primer menggunakan dairy journal, observasi, dokumentasi video dan wawancara secara online. Pada acara pembukaan kegiatan ini diawali sosialisasi konservasi sehingga bukan saja literasi bahasa Inggris yang mengalami peningkatan namun juga literasi pengelolaan lingkungan hidup. Peningkatan pengetahuan Bahasa Inggris dari kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini menunjukkan hasil yang memuaskan bagi anak-anak SD/ MI sederajat level 1st Primary Class dengan capaian 80% (pengenalan Number)  90% (pengenalan Part of the Body), dan 99% (pengenalan Greeting). Sedangkan kemampuan level 2nd Primary Class terhadap pengetahuan Introducing Myselft mencapai 32% (kategori lancar menjawab) dan 68% (kategori kurang lancar menjawab). Sedangkan hasil wawancara dengan orangtua menunjukkan bahwa kegiatan semacam ini sangat bermanfaat untuk mengisi waktu luang anak-anak serta dapat mengurangi intensitas penggunaan gadget sehingga kegiatan ini dapat dilakukan secara berkesinambungan. Salah satu peserta juga menunjukkan antusiasnya karena selama bimbingan belajar, para tutor menggunakan metode pembelajaran yang menarik dan atraktif. Mengingat manfaatnya yang sangat luar biasa, kegiatan ini diharapkan dapat diselenggarakan lagi dimasa mendatang dengan menlibatkan berbagai disiplin keilmuwan yang berbeda.

Abstract

Abstract This community service is carried out with the aim of increasing the knowledge and the empowerment of Paguyuban Kawargian Adat on marketing of food products and e-writing using WhatsApp Group. The activity involves 9 members of Paguyuban Kawargian Adat in the area of Ciung Wanara Cultural Tourist Attraction who represents kiosk trader. All participants are given a training of food product marketing and Electronic-based writing of English language using WhatsApp Group. The training uses extention activity, Focus Group Discussion (FGD), and WhatsApp Group screenshot documents as the primary data. The result of training shows that the knowledge of Paguyuban Kawargian Adat on marketing of food product achieves 3,8 on average of all 5 test items with the completion value of 76%. Meanwhile, the knowledge of English Advertising Slogan obtains 4,9 on average of all 5 test items with the completion value of 98%. The skill of e-writing includes word, phrase, and sentence levels forming the slogans for food product marketing. The results obtained from Focus GroupDiscussion suggest that the training or learning using WhatsApp Group impacts on the acquisition of knowledge and empowerment of Paguyuban Kawargian Adat due the assistance and effectivness of WhatsApp Group. Abstrak Pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini dilakukan untuk meningkatkan keberdayaan dan pengetahuan pemasaran produk pangan dengan E-writing menggunakan WhatsApp Group. Kegiatan ini melibatkan anggota Paguyuban Kawargian Adat di area Objek Wisata Budaya Ciung Wanara yang berjumlah 9 orang perwakilan pedagang Warung Kios. Peserta kegiatan diberikan pelatihan pemasaran produk pangan dan penulisan Bahasa Inggris secara elektronik (E-writing) melalui WhatsApp Group. Kegiatan pelatihan menggunakan tekhnik penyuluhan,diskusi kelompok terfokus dan dokumen tangkap layar WhatsApp Group menjadi sumber data. Hasil pelatihan menunjukkan bahwa pengetahuan Paguyuban Kawargian Adat untuk pemasaran produk pangan mencapai nilaii rata-rata 3,8 dari keseluruhan 5 soal yang diberikan sehingga nilai ketuntasannya adalah 76%. Sedangkan pengetahuan E-writing Slogan Iklan Bahasa Inggris mencapai nilai rata-rata 4,9 dari keseluruahn 5 soal yang diberikan sehingga nilai ketuntasannya adalah 98%. Keterampilan menulis Bahasa Inggris secara elektronikmeliputi tataran kata, frase, dan kalimat yang membentuk slogan iklan untuk memasarkan produk pangan. Melalui diskusi kelompok terfokus dapat diketahui bahwa pelatihan dan pembelajaran menggunakan WhatsApp Group berdampak terhadap pemerolehan pengetahuan dan keberdayaan masyarakat Paguyuban Kawargian Adat karena kemudahan dan efektifitasnya.

Abstract

Program bimbingan belajar hadir untuk menyediakan bimbingan belajar. Bahasa Inggris bagi anak-anak Sekolah Dasar sebagai salah satu strategi peningkatan kualitas berkomunikasi dalam Bahasa Inggris. Tujuan dari bimbingan belajar Bahasa Inggris adalah anak-anak memiliki pengenalan materi dasar tentang Bahasa Inggris dasar dan mampu mengucapakan kata-kata dan kalimat-kalimat dasar dalam Bahasa Inggris yang berhubungan dengan kehidupan sehari-hari. Metode pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini berupa penyuluhan melalui pembelajaranya yaitu pembelajaran kooperatif tipe STAD dengan cara anggota tim menggunakan lembar kegiatan atau perangkat pembelajaran yang lain untuk menuntaskan materi pelajarannya dan kemudian saling membantu satu sama lain untuk memahami bahan pelajaran melalui tutorial, kuis, dan atau melakukan diskusi. Lokasi untuk pengabdianya berada di Dusun Dobo Kecamatan Pataruman Kota Banjar Jawa Barat tepatnya di KADIBAWA (kampong diskusi baca warga). Pembelajaran kooperatif tipe STAD yang dilaksanakan telah mampu menumbuhkan dan meningkatkan motivasi belajar 30 anak anak sehingga prestasi belajar Anak anak “Kampung Diskusi Baca Warga”meningkat. Terutama adanya penghargaan yang diberikan tutor disekolahnya pada kelompok terbaik. Pemberian penghargaan ini telah memunculkan efek positif pada anak anak. Anak anak semakin antusias untuk belajar
