Abstract

This study aims to discover the type of discrimination experienced by Auggie and how the psychological aspects of Auggie based on Abraham Maslow's theory in Wonder novel by R.J. Palacio. The data source used in this study was the novel Wonder. In analyzing the data, the writer used a qualitative research method through a psychology approach. Data were obtained by using reading, noting, and analyzing techniques. While in classifying and analyzing data, the writer used Abraham Maslow's theory. The writer found that the novel Wonder by R.J Palacio contained 13 data indicating that the character experienced discrimination there were 6 data direct discrimination and 7 data indirect discrimination, and 25 data indicating the Hierarchy of human needs. This data is divided into 5 types of needs. The first need was physiological needs with 4 data, the second is safety needs with 4 data, love and belonging needs with 6 data, esteem needs with 7 data, and self-actualization needs with 5 data.

Abstract

This Study aims to identify the type of politeness principle used by the character in the novel and to find out how the politeness principle that was used by the characters in the novel. The data source of the study is the novels In H.G Well’s The War of The World. In analyzing the data, the researcher used qualitative descriptive method and Maxim’s theory. Data were obtained by using the techniques of reading and analyzing. In this study, researcher found 19 data using 6 types of leech theory, namely tact maxim, modesty maxim, approbation maxim, agreement maxim, sympathy maxim, and generosity maxim. In using tact maxim the characters express it in a sincere way, in using modesty Maxim the characters used it by reducing self-praise, in using approbation maxim characters use it in a polite way of praising someone. The agreement maxim used by the characters for asking permission and agreeing, while sympathy maxim used by characters to to keep the people feeling, and generosity maxim for praising someone.

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to identify the depictions of violence racism and identify the impact of violence racism on African-America society in“Black Klansman” novel by Rons Stallworth.The data source used in this research is Black Klansman novel. In analyzing the data, the writer used a qualitative descriptive research method through sociological approach. The data were obtained by using reading, identified, noting and quoting, and collecting data techniques to classify the racism and the impact of racism in the novel Black Klansman by Swingewood and Setiadi theories with his classification of violence in narrow and broad sense. The result of this research there were 13 data that depicted of violence racism in “Black Klansman” novel by Ron Stallworth. 5 data contained the violence racism in narrow sense, 8 data of the violence racism in broad sense, and there were 9 data which include the impact of violence racism.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the type of epistemic modality most frequently used and also to determine the speaker's attitude towards his editorial. The level of editorial confidence in the written editorial can be seen by looking at the use of verb modals which is epistemic modality. The writer assesses modality based on qualitatif method to describe the speaker’s attitude and quantitative to determine the type of modality that is the most often used. The data collection procedure was sourced from newspaper and used 43 editorial texts as the research sample. The results of this study found that the type of epistemic modality most often used was the assumptive type which reached 61,8%. The second is the speculative type with a percentage of 26,4%. The third is deductive type with a percentage of 8,9%. And the fourth is concessive type with a percentage of 2,9%. Apart from that, this study also found that the speaker's attitude was doubtful about his proposition when based only on possible conclusions. The speaker's attitude is confident in his proposition when it is based on a sound conclusion. The speaker's attitude of being confident and believing what is necessity to do is based on the only possible conclusion. And the speaker predicts something to be true when the speaker has evidence that contrasts with the proposition.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the forms of interrogative sentences in Torajanese and English structurally. This research is a descriptive qualitative research with the sample of native speakers of Torajanese in Pangala’ Village, North Toraja Regency. The method used in this research is contrastive method proposed by Tarigan. Then, for analyzed the types and forms of interrogative sentence the writer used the theory proposed by Quirk. The results of this research indicated that there were dominant differences in terms of sentence structure between Torajanese and English. The first types is Yes/No question, there are 8 forms of Interrogative sentences in Torajanese. Then, for the second types there are 7 forms of Wh-question. In the third types namely Alternative question there are 3 forms. Moreover, the differences from both languages were in placing the question word, in English it always begins with an Auxiliary verb or To Be and Wh-word. While, in Torajanese it was “Raka” which was equal to auxiliary verb, In Torajanese, it did not always begin in front of the sentence, but begins in the middle, and at the end of the sentence.

Abstract

This research aims to look at language variations that occur phonologically and lexically in the Scouse dialect or Liverpool English in English and Tabulahan dialect in Mamuju language. Sources of the data for the Tabulahan dialect and Mamuju language were obtained directly from the informants as native speakers of the Tabulahan and Mamuju languages. Meanwhile, the Scouse dialect and English data as a comparison were obtained from previous research conducted by Honeybone (2007) and Baranova (2015). The writer used a qualitative method through a dialectological approach and contrastive analysis. The results of this study show that there are similarities and differences. Phonologically, similarities occur in the features of Vocal Change and Lenition. The difference occurs in the features of the TH-stopping and the category of Rhotic and non-Rhotic which the Tabulahan Dialect does not have this feature but is found in the Scouse Dialect in English. Lexically, both dialects have variations in word classes such as nouns, verbs, adverbs, and adjectives. While the differences occur in other word class variations such as pronouns, prepositions, determinants, conjunctions, numbers and question words which are only found in the Tabuhanan dialect.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the factors and causes of household problem that portrayed in the novel Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. This research is expected to be a reference for future researchers. The data source used in this research is the novel Gone Girl. In analyzing the data, the researcher applied qualitative descriptive method through a sociological approach. The data were obtained by reading, identifying, note-taking, and quoting techniques. The analysis applied the social context by Ian Watt's theory. The results of this research showed the factors and causes of household problems in the novel Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn is as a reflection of society. Internal factors were factors that came from each partner, how to resolve the conflicts, communicate, and sexual relations, while external factors were factors that from outside the partner such as rude actions against partners, rude words, the presence of other people in household relationships, problems about children, and parental intervention. The cause of household problems was the cause of an event that gave rise to something such as the occurrence of rudeness, cheating, and incompatibility.

Abstract

The study aims at finding out the types and meaning of the Tominaa language or utterances that used in Rambu Solo text. The data were analyzed and transcribed into English. The sources of the data were the Rambu solo text and the explanation from the village leader who understands well the Tominaa language. The study applied the qualitative descriptive method. The study reveal that there were 20 data from Rambu solo text which told about the life journey history of the death peolple before she/he burying. The data were transcribed based on the information from informants but it was difficult to understand because some words have two meaning and only appears in particular time. Only a few informants who could understand perfectly about the text and its meaning the new generation of Tanah Toraja already forgot about this language.

Abstract

Some difficulties of the speakers in using the diexis in the social interaction, and make the speakers misunderstand the message of utterances. The research aimed to find out the types and function of deixis in the Raya and The Last Dragon movie script. The deixis are always found in the daily interaction. The deixis were analyzed in the interaction or the utterance in which related to the people, something, place and time. The research applied qualitative descriptive through pragmatic approach in analyzing the data. The data were obtained by reading, identifying, highlighting the words that contained deixis in the utterance based on Levinson theory. The results show that there were five types of deixis used in movie script namely person deixis, time deixis, place deixis, discourse deixis and social deixis. Person deixis was the most dominant types used in movie script. Every deixis has different functions based on the types of deixis such as: person deixis has 6 functions, time deixis has 3 functions, place deixis has 3 functions, discourse deixis has 2 functions and social deixis has 5 functions.

Abstract

The script made the audience confuse and the actual social influence of the literature. The research aimed is to identify the social aspects that appeared in Encanto movie script and to found out the impacts of the main character to the society in Encanto movie script. The research applied descriptive qualitative method in order to explain the types of social aspects that are found in the Encanto movie script and the impacts of the main character to the society in Encanto movie script with sociological approach. The writer found there are 3 types of social aspects; culture aspects, social environment aspects and economic aspects. The writer also found the impact of the main character to the society which was the main character could influence other character which has an impact of changing people’s perspective on being positive in every way, to not judge book by its cover.
