Abstract

The emergence of group online communication provides various patterns in using language, especially in written text. In the process, teenagers and adult learners who frequently use online communication produce new vocabularies, spelling modifications, symbols, and emoticons in their online written communication. This study focusses on the word-formation processes used in written online communication especially during usage of a WhatsApp Group (WAG). The study aims at finding types of word-formation processes that emerged in WAG. Collected data was examined empirically to understand the characteristics of WAG users and their patterns in forming words. A descriptive method and data collected from 30 chats were gathered from WAG consisting of students attending Mahasaraswati University in Bali. The study analyzed 336 words and classified them into the appropriate word-formation processes (Yule, 2010). The study found three predominant types of processes used by WAG users: borrowing, multiple processes, clipping, and three other processes included acronym, blending, and miscellaneous (not stipulated in his theoretical backing (see table 6)), which were used less by WAG users. Changing words into shorter or simpler forms and borrowing words from other languages were some strategies used by the users of WAG to accelerate the production of text or chat. These appear to be the reasons why users mainly generated these three most types of word-formation processes in WAG. The investigation has presented a diversity of word-formation processes used in WAG. In turn, this diversity may cast light on the creativity of online group communication language usage.

Abstract

This research aimed at knowing the effectiveness of online learning design with an e-portfolio approach in increasing self-efficacy in speaking ability. Seventy-seven students were involved in this study. They are in the second semester of a vocational college in Business Administration Department in the academic year 2020/2021. This research is experimental research with implementing paired samples t-test as the measurement tool in knowing the effectiveness of e-portfolio based learning by finding the t score and the sig value before and after the implementation of the teaching method. The result of this study showed that e-portfolio based learning had a significant effect on the student's self-efficacy in their speaking ability. It was indicated by the value of the sig and t result from paired samples t-test analysis which was showed 0.000 as the sig value and -20.551 as the t count. The result of sig value which is below 0.05 and the t-count which is above t-table were clear indicators to argue that e-portfolio significantly impacted the student's self-efficacy in speaking ability. In this case, the variables of self-efficacy in speaking ability were improved significantly by the implementation of e-portfolio based learning. Even the implementation of e-portfolio brings many positive impacts on the students, some limitations lie on this method implementation. The limitation of this method lies in the time execution and the number of students who are taught by the lecturer.

Abstract

Abstract

In the lens of technology used in classroom instruction, the 360-video virtual reality begins to use in the education field. This study aimed to identify the Indonesian language students in the higher education level perceptions of the use of SVVR (Spherical Virtual-based Video Reality) which was operated through the smartphone. The performance expectancy (PE) and effort expectancy (EE) in the UTAUT theory was employed to assess the data. There were 131 sophomores who learn the Indonesian language in the tourism department in the State Polytechnic of Bali involved to provide specific arguments through the questionnaire. The result of the study explained that learners in the Polytechnic education system were keen to engage SVVR (Spherical Virtual-Video Based Reality) during the teaching and learning process. Additionally, this learning medium elevated students’ urge significantly in learning the Indonesian language. Subsequently, the SVVR will be a promising tool employed by the lecturer who teaches the learners in the applied education system. These learning materials ought to be explored and developed more systematically by lecturers in underpinning students’ demand for knowledge and materials understanding in vocational education.

Abstract

This study explores students' perceptions regarding the effectiveness of e-portfolio-based digital modules in a hybrid learning environment. The study involved 77 students in the Business Administration Department of a vocational college during the 2021/2022 academic year. Data was collected through a questionnaire with five aspects of e-module implementation and semi-structured interviews. The results indicate that the e-module created has a substantial impact on students' learning, both online and offline. Experts have previously indicated that e-portfolios allow students to build their independent learning environments, and students in this study confirm that access to electronic modules through smartphones offers a new learning approach. However, further development of the module into web-based materials is recommended to help students learn more efficiently. Overall, the integration of e-portfolio-based digital modules in a hybrid learning environment provides students with positive effects on their independent learning process.

Abstract

The English and guiding training conducted in Perean Village aims to improve the language and guiding skills of the members of the Pokdarwis group. This is expected to enhance the quality and services of the village as a tourist destination that advances in the future. The community engagement activity was carried out by the community service team from the Language Lab Unit at Politeknik Negeri Bali for 5 months, consisting of 5 stages of activities from proposal to evaluation. In its implementation, the community service team provided various methods of English and guiding training and learning to the Pokdarwis participants, including interactive games, speaking, listening, and writing. Interactive games provide an opportunity for participants to learn English without feeling pressured, which positively impacts their motivation to learn consistently. Furthermore, the combination of speaking, listening, and writing training also has the potential to efficiently develop participants' skills, which is essential for tour guides who require good English skills. However, the weakness of participants in recognizing English vocabulary provides an opportunity for the community service team to develop a more specific approach in improving the vocabulary of the participants. This approach is expected to have a positive and significant impact in improving the English skills of tour guides in Perean Village, Tabanan, Bali.
