Abstract

In Indonesia English is the first foreign language and taught as a compulsory subject in secondary and tertiary education with the objective primarily to provide the students with the ability to read English textbooks on their related fields. In spite of the efforts made to improve the teaching especially in secondary school, the result is, so far, still unsatisfactory. This article argues that the implementation of learning autonomy could possibly be a way to improve ELT in Indonesia.

Abstract

The study is an attempt to empirically examine factors that differentiate EFL readers with different EFL reading proficiency levels. Four selected factors believed to play a role in reading comprehension are considered, namely: linguistic knowledge, reading strategies, text structure knowledge, content and world background knowledge. Discriminant analysis was employed to scrutinize the data collected on these variables. The analysis wraps up, revealing that advanced EFL readers, while they are sufficiently equipped with formal schemata that necessarily embrace both linguistic knowledge and text structure knowledge, can be speculated to consist of three groups: those who fail to activate their relevant schemata, those who fail to use their reading strategies, and those who can function both content and world background knowledge and their reading strategies with ease.

The sample comprised 120 first semester English-majored students of a state university in Bali, Indonesia. The data were collected from documents and by administering two questionnaires. Multiple linear regression analysis conducted revealed that learner autonomy and English proficiency as defined in the study had a significant, strong, positive relationship. Some suggestions related to the results of the study, especially in the EFL context, are discussed.

Abstract

Entrepreneurship in online business is related to the rapidly growing number of internet literacy in Indonesia. Currently, 160 million people access the internet, making Indonesia an economical cake that creates a potential market. It encourages market competition and innovation in the red zone. Competition triggers business actors, including entrepreneurs, to rethink the strategies applied to win market competition relevant to the current phenomenon. The research question is related to how online business entrepreneurs take advantage of innovation to survive the business turbulence, such as developing technology, changing regulations, market tastes, and the need for social distancing in a pandemic situation. Innovative Entrepreneurship (IE), initially inspired by Schumpeter and Lumpkin Dess, is now further transformed by the evolution of generations from generation X to generation Y (millennial generation). Millennials have different characters and lifestyles, so that in terms of entrepreneurial characteristics, millennials have an IE perspective that brings their uniqueness. In line with the development of the internet and application breakthroughs by unicorn developers, E-marketplaces have become an interesting online business phenomenon to explore and create the dynamics of IE. This study is based on the perspective of technology-based entrepreneurship through a qualitative approach. The results of the study obtained an IE construct with millennial ownership. The construct of IE in the online business environment is formed by four dimensions, namely technology, work atmosphere, organizational strategy, and market agility. By applying these four dimensions, the IE construct will foster entrepreneurship to formulate better ways to survive and win the competition in the e-marketplace business environment.

Abstract

The research objective was to evaluate the industrial practice programs using the Kirkpatrick's evaluation model, which focuses on human resource development. This study used a four-levels of the Kirkpatrick evaluation model, namely reaction, learning, behaviour, and results. The research subjects were the students majoring in mechanical engineering at Private Vocational High School Muhammadiyah 1 Kepanjen who had done industrial practices. The data was collected using a questionnaire instrument, test, interview, and documentation. Based on the data analysis, the evaluation of the industrial practice program on the student's reaction aspect using the facilities, material, instructor, time, and infrastructure indicators was in the 'good' category. The pre-test and post-test results in the learning aspect experienced an increase, as indicated by the mean values of 61.83 and 80.83. Behavioural aspects based on changes in work behaviour, skills and knowledge generally underwent significant changes. The results aspect showed the impact of graduate work performance on increasing incomes and positions; the data showed that only a small proportion of graduates get this increase. The school can use the results of this study as input in dealing with various problems and the success of industrial practice programs.
