Abstract

This article reports on a study intended to find out the patterns of the Self Access Center (SAC) utilization by students of  the English Departments, State University of Malang, and to  explore the most effective pattern in developing students English proficiency as well as students learning autonomy. The study involved 207 students of various years. The data were collected through questionnaires, observations, and interviews. Analyses of the students responses to the questionnaires resulted in the findings that the more advanced the students were, the less frequently they utilized the SAC; that the students proficiency was improving along with classes; and that the students were autonomous in their learning. In addition, the study also found out that the materials and activities need to be periodically updated in order for the SAC  to better serve the learning needs of the more advanced students.

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to determine the perception of lecturers of Biology Education Program on the integration of scientific literacy on curriculum design. The data were collected by questionnaire consisting of four dimensions: (1) curriculum component, (2) development of teaching staff, (3) curriculum development and evaluation, and (4) resources. The results show that scientific literature is integrated in the curriculum component but the lecturer considers science as simply the material being taught. In addition training, access to aid, and awards for teachers who undertake scientific literacy learning are lacking. For lecturers, the availability of standard instruments and the regularity of curriculum evaluation also need to be accommodated.Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui persepsi dosen prodi Pendidikan Biologi mengenai integrasi literasi saintifik pada desain kurikulum. Pengambilan data dilakukan dengan kuesioner yang terdiri dari empat dimensi yakni (1) komponen kurikulum, (2) pengembangan tenaga pengajar, (3) pengembangan dan evaluasi kurikulum, dan (4) sumber daya. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa literasi saintifik terintegrasi dalam komponen kurikulum namun dosen menganggap sains sekedar materi yang diajarkan. Selain itu, pelatihan, akses bantuan, dan penghargaan bagi pengajar yang melakukan pembelajaran literasi saintifik masih kurang. Bagi dosen, ketersediaan instrumen baku dan keteraturan evaluasi kurikulum juga perlu untuk diakomodasi.

Abstract

Abstract: This research was aimed to improve the soft physical motoric skill of kids in coordinating eyes and hands movements through the implementation of playing strategy by using busy book media. The subjects of this research were 16 kids at group A Nafilah Kindegarten Malang City. The results of the observation concludes that the soft physical motoric skill of kids experiences improvement from classical average in the amount of 50% at the first cycle then it improves to be 100% at the second cycle. This improvement can be achieved through the implementation of playing strategy by using busy book media conducted by the teachers until it gives progress on the aspect of kids soft physical motoric skill in coordinating eyes and hands movements.Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan fisik motorik halus anak dalam mengoordinasikan gerak mata dan tangan melalui penerapan strategi bermain dengan menggunakan media busy book. Subjek dalam penelitian ini sebanyak 16 anak di kelompok A TK Nafilah Kota Malang. Hasil observasi menyimpulkan bahwa kemampuan fisik motorik halus anak mengalami peningkatan dari rata-rata klasikal sebesar 50% pada siklus I kemudian meningkat pada siklus II mencapai 100%. Peningkatan tersebut dapat dicapai melalui penerapan strategi bermain dengan menggunakan media busy book yang telah dilaksanakan guru sehingga memberikan kemajuan pada aspek fisik motorik halus anak dalam mengoordinasikan gerak mata dan tangan.

Abstract

Abstract: Teacher?s corrective feedback on in English class has been studied many times in secondary or higher education level. However, how a teacher deliver corrective feedback in non-English subjects for students in elementary students rarely become the focus of studies. Therefore, this qualitative research studied the elementary students of International Class Program of SD Laboratorium UM. The second grader and the teachers contributed as the research subjects. There were five corrective feedback types used by the teacher, translation, first language, conversational recast, clarification, and explicit. Those feedbacks were considered as effective feedbacks since the students mostly responded to it.Abstrak: Penelitian tentang feedback korektif guru sebelumnya seringkali diteliti di pendidikan menengah atau di tingkat perguruan tinggi. Namun, bagaimana guru menyampaikan feedback korektif untuk siswa sekolah dasar pada pelajaran non-bahasa inggris sangat jarang dijadikan fokus penelitian. Maka dari itu penelitian ini mengkaji bagaimana guru memberikan korektif feedback pada siswa Program Kelas Internasional SD Laboratorium UM. Siswa kelas dua beserta gurunya menjadi subjek penelitian ini. Ada lima jenis feedback korektif yang diberikan guru; translation, first language, conversational recast, clarification, dan explicit. Feedback tersebut direspons oleh siswa.

Abstract

This collaborative action research aimed at increasing teachers' reflective teaching through the use of mutual observation and conference among critical friends, and the writing of teaching journal. It consisted of two cycles and involved two lecturers, two senior teachers, and one junior teacher. In cycle one, mutual observation followed with conference among critical friends resulted in the teachers' more reflective attitude about their teaching performance and better relationship between senior and junior teachers. Though considered to be beneficial, mutual observation needed deeply rooted trust among colleauges that needed long time to grow and neatly arranged teaching schedule. Therefore, in the second cycle, the writing of teaching journal, which then was discussed among critical friends, was taken as alternative.

Abstract

This study aimed at describing the implementation of Writing Process Approach in an informal classroom of fourth and fifth graders of Barrington Elementary School in Columbus, United States. The data were gathered from five-week observation. The results showed that (1) students were provided with regular, abundant opportunity to write, (2) students were free to choose their own topics with the general theme that the teacher set, (3) there were student-student conferences, student-teacher conferences, and whole-class conferences which allowed the teacher and also the peer to scaffold students in their meaning-making process, (4) language was taught out of students’ individual and whole class writing contexts, (5) students were surrounded by rich literature, (6) the implementation of the writing process did not follow a linear predetermined, rigid stages, but was based on students’ individual characteristics.

Abstract

Abstract: This study presents the graduate students’ understanding of metacognitive reading strategies. Obtained from thinking-aloud and interview, seven reading strategies are monitored when reading namely, (1) restating strategy to figure out the author’s meaning, (2) making gist conclusion to get the key point, (3) using Google translate to interpret new terms confidently, (4) Rereading to amplify self-understanding correction, (5) Using context clues to get complete idea of the point, (6) underlining to centralize reading points, and (7) Asking self-questions for rechecking comprehension. By noticing the strategies use and the reasons for its use, the students understand the appropriate strategies to use.Keywords: metacognitive reading knowledge, reading strategies, declarative-conditional knowledge, thinking-aloudAbstrak: Penelitian ini menyajikan pemahaman mahasiswa pascasarjana tentang strategi membaca metakognitif. Diperoleh dari thinking-aloud dan wawancara, tujuh strategi membaca yang dipantau saat membaca yaitu, (1) strategi mengulang untuk memahami makna penulis, (2) menyimpulkan inti bacaan untuk mendapatkan inti pembahasan, (3) menggunakan Google translate untuk menafsirkan istilah baru dengan percaya diri, (4) Membaca ulang untuk memperkuat koreksi pemahaman diri, (5) Membaca kontekstual untuk mengetahui info lengkap, (6) menggarisbawahi untuk memusatkan poin bacaan, dan (7) Mengajukan pertanyaan diri untuk memeriksa kembali pemahaman. Abstract

Abstract: This study was implemented in a private institution focusing on the ESP textbook employed in the class of management. There were 196 students, 9 ESP instructors, and one ESP expert who participated in this research. The aim was to know their perspectives toward the textbook used. It focused on five criteria applied. There were aims and approaches, skills and strategies, topics, practical considerations, and methodologies. The subjects agreed that from criteria of the aims and approaches, topics, and methodologies were good. In contrast, the other criteria, such as practical consideration and skills and strategies, slightly needed to be re-evaluated as some parts of them were inappropriate specifically to their level of comprehension.Keywords: ESP textbook, textbook evaluation, needs analysisAbstrak: Penelitian ini dilaksanakan pada sebuah institusi swasta yang berfokus pada buku ESP yang digunakan pada kelas manajemen. Ada 196 mahasiswa, 9 instruktur dan seorang ahli ESP yang ikutserta dalam studi ini. Tujuannya adalah untuk mengetahui perspektif mereka terhadap buku yang digunakan. Penelitian ini berfokus pada lima kriteria. Kriteria tersebut yakni tujuan dan pendekatan, kemampuan dan strategi, topik, pertimbangan praktis, dan metodologi. Semua subjek setuju bahwa pada kriteria tujuan dan pendekatan, topik, dan metodologi, buku ini sudah baik. Sedangkan kriteria lain seperti pertimbangan praktis, dan keterampilan serta strategi sedikit perlu dievaluasi kembali karena beberapa bagian di antaranya tidak sesuai khususnya dengan tingkat pemahaman mereka. Kata kunci: buku teks ESP, evaluasi buku teks, analisis kebutuhan

Abstract

Abstract: This study aimed to improve students’ narrative writing by implementing POWER strategy combined with the animated film at class VIIIB of SMPS Kartika Kendari. It was CAR design conducted in 2 cycles. The findings showed an improvement in writing ability in which 29 students (82.85%) achieved the minimum passing grade and the rest 6 students (17.15%) were in fair level of writing, and the result of teaching and learning process showed that 82.5% respond positively. The teachers are suggested to use this strategy as an alternative way to improve the writing ability and the media that is used should be appropriate with students’ level.Key Words: POWER strategy, animated film, writing narrative Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan menulis naratif siswa dengan menerapkan POWER strategy berbantuan film animasi pada kelas VIIIB SMPS Kartika Kendari. Penelitian tindakan kelas ini dilakukan 2 siklus. Temuan-temuan menunjukan ada peningkatan kemampuan menulis dimana 29 siswa (82.85%) mencapai KKM dan sisanya 6 siswa (17.15%) berada pada tingkatan cukup dalam menulis, dan hasil proses belajar dan mengajar menunjukan 82.5% merespon dengan positif. Guru disarankan untuk menggunakan strategi ini sebagai salah satu alternatif untuk meningkatkan kemampuan menulis dan media yang digunakan harus sesuai dengan tingkatan siswa.Kata Kunci: stategi POWER, film animasi, menulis naratif
