Abstract

Environmental issues from pollution to climate change are a major concern in today’s world in which mining activities and its attributed pollution effects posed a looming threat to the environment and human health. This study examines how the implementation of contextual learning in environmental education program could alter students’ attitude on the health effects of mercury. Respondents were 165 junior high school students in Aceh Province-Indonesia. Students’ attitude on the health effects of mercury was explored via a questionnaire administered before and after learning, and the collected data was analyzed by Rasch Modeling. Rasch modeling indicated that contextual learning significantly alters students’ attitude on the health effects of mercury. Students’ attitude changes before and after learning are discussed.

Abstract

ABSTRAKMatematika merupakan salah satu mata pelajaran yang menantang pemahaman siswa; pokok bahasan peluang dalam topik statistik merupakan hal yang bermanfaat dan mempunyai aplikasi ke berbagai disiplin ilmu. Namun, pokok bahasan ini termasuk yang kurang dipahami oleh siswa. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji pemahaman siswa dalam menyelesaikan masalah peluang (probabilitas) dan untuk mengetahui masalah yang dihadapi oleh siswa dalam menyelesaikan masalah peluang. Untuk tujuan tersebut, satu studi kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi kasus telah dilakukan dengan jumlah sampel secara purposif sebanyak delapan orang pada siswa kelas sepuluh di sekolah menengah negeri di daerah Johor Bahru, Malaysia. Data penelitian pada tahap awal didapat dengan memberikan ujian diagnostik kepada sampel, kemudian empat orang diantaranya dipilih untuk di wawancara secara mendalam mengenai jawaban yang diberikan. Wawancara difokuskan kepada pola pemahaman siswa dalam menyelesaikan masalah peluang dan masalah yang di hadapi oleh mereka dalam menyelesaikan masalah peluang tersebut. Data kualitatif kemudian dianalisis menggunakan kaedah analisis tematik. Hasil studi mendapati beberapa tema dan pola yang menjelaskan tentang pemahaman siswa dalam menyelesaikan masalah peluang yaitu miskonsepsi, penguasaan konsep yang lemah dan tidak memahami kalimat dan istilah.ABSTRACTMathematics is one the challenging subject to students’ understanding, and probability concepts in statistics is one of the concept that used in many disciplines. However, this topic is one that not comprehensively understood by students. This study purpose is to seek students understanding about probability topic and to know problem that students’ face when solving prability problems. A qualitative study that employed case study design has been coducted with sampling of eight of year 10 students selected purposively in one public secondary school in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. First stage of data collection came from diagnostic tests to students; then four of the students are chosen to be interviewed. Data from interviews and diagnostic test analyse with thematics method. The study found that students have misconception to probability concept, they have poor understanding and cannot understand terms used.

Abstract

ABSTRAKSaat ini, informasi dan teknologi komunikasi (ICT) menjadi alat yang sangat diperlukan untuk belajar, khususnya multimedia komputer dan sumber daya internet. Makalah ini menyelidiki penggunaan ICT dalam pembelajaran oleh guru sains di sekolah menengah pertama dari berbagai provinsi di Indonesia. Ada 151 guru yang berpartisipasi dalam studi ini menggunakan metode campuran, yang mereka diminta untuk mengisi kuesioner dan menjawab beberapa pertanyaan terbuka. Di banyak tempat, ilmu guru mulai sudah mulai menggunakan ICT dalam pengajaran dan kegiatan belajar, baik di laboratorium kelas atau komputer, serta penggunaan internet sebagai sumber belajar. Ada beberapa masalah yang terungkap disebabkan oleh hal-hal teknis (listrik, fasilitas hard ware, virus komputer) atau yang berhubungan dengan keterampilan dan isu-isu pengelolaan seperti pelatihan, penyusunan dan penggunaan yang efektif.ABSTRACTCurrently, information and communication technology (ICT) is becoming indispensable tool for learning, particularly computer multimedia and internet resources. This paper investigates the use of ICT in learning by science teachers at lower secondary school from various provinces in Indonesia. There were 151 teachers who participated in the study using mixed methods, which they were required to complete the questionnaire and answer several open-ended questions. In many places, science teachers begun have started using ICT in their teaching and learning activities, either in classroom or computer laboratory, as well as the use of internet as learning resources. There were some problems revealed which were caused by technical things (electricity, hard ware facilities, computer virus) or related to skills and managing issues such as training, preparation and its effective use.

Abstract

Science laboratory activities are important part of science learning at school level. However there are still debate about how we put in the context of science learning and best approach to use them. Using mixed methods, this research investigates science teachers’ perspectives regarding science laboratory activities in Cimahi, West Java, Indonesia at public junior secondary school level. There were sixty two teachers participated giving their answer and write their comments in the questionnaire, then followed with informal discussion. Some findings revealed: teachers view that laboratory work is to make students finding science facts and principle, their difficulty to conduct the activity which related to support needed, they require specific training about laboratory’ skills and management and their identification of science teachers preparation and competency.
