Abstract

Main issue of this commuity service is Motivating Students. Its objective was Increasing Vocabulary of English Language. Its specific target is SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Palu has students who have more vocabulary so that they can easily understand and express sentences of the EFL (English as a Foreign Language). They can be global students if they can increase vocabulary to express the internatonal language. Commuicative method was used to reach the objective. Formerly they were shy and unconfident in expressing the language vocabulary, but after being motivated to increase the global language vocabulary they then were confident to practice it by interacting with the community service team and have spirits better better than before to increase the vocabulary of English so that they can express the lingua franca words. The team motivated them to increase their English vocabulary practically and accompanied them to apply the practical ways of increasing the EFL vocabulary so that they have been able to express its words. They can be motivated to increase the vocabulary by telling them status and significances of English in Indonesia.Keywords: Motivating, Increasing, English, Language, Vocabulary

Abstract

Pengabdian ini dalam bentuk pelatihan tentang penggunaan chatbot Artificial Intelligence (AI) dalam meningkatkan kosa kata peserta didik di SMPN 9 Palu. Tujuan pelatihan ini adalah menumbuhkan dan mengembangkan minat dan kreativitaspeserta pelatihan dalam berbahasa Inggris dengan memperkaya kosa kata bahasa Inggris; menghadirkan mediapembelajaran berbasis ICT (Information Communication Technology) ke dalamkelas yaitu aplikasi chatbotyang dapat digunakan untuk mengirim pesan digitalberbahasaInggris.Tujuankegiatan ini adalah meningkatkan kosa kata peserta untuk dapat berkomunikasiyang baik dalam bahasa Inggris;memberipenjelasansecaraprosedural penggunaan aplikasi chatbot AI mengenai pemanfaatan teknologi dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggrissertabagaimanamempraktikkannyamelalui aplikasi android;memfasilitasi peserta dengan belajar secara mandiri.Lebihlanjut,kegiatan ini juga mengasah keterampilan peserta untukmembuat dan menyampaikan gagasan dalam berkomunikasi secara tertulis dalam berbahasa Inggris. Kegiatan ini dilakukan melalui metode ceramah dan demonstrasi. Kemudian dilanjutkandenganpraktiklangsung(handsonpractice).Metodedemonstrasidancontohlebihbanyakmelibatkanpenguraiandancara memperagakan sesuatu melalui contoh-contoh atau dengan kata lain learning bydoingataulearningbypracticeyangmenekankanpadabelajarsambilpraktik,jadibukanhanyasekadarteori.Jadi,pesertapelatihandiberikesempatanuntukmempraktikkan dalam menggunakanchatbot AI.Selainitu,pesertadidikmembuat suatu tulisan pendek untuk percakapan bahasa Inggris dengandibantuolehtimpengabdidanmahasiswayang terlibatdalam kegiatanini. Hasil pelatihan ini menunjukkan bahwa semua peserta antusias, senang, dan termotivasi karena aplikasi ini masih asing bagi peserta. Peserta juga telah mengetahui penggunaan aplikasi ini, sehingga secara tidak langsung dapat belajar mandiri kapan dan dimanapun peserta berada. This public service was in the form of training on the use of Chatbot of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in improving the vocabulary of students at SMPN 9 Palu. This objective is to foster and develop interest and training of participants in English; bringing ICT-based learning media (Information Communication Technology) into the classroom, namely a chatbot application that can be used to send digital messages in English. The purpose of this activity is to improve the participants' words to be able to communicate well in English; provide a procedural explanation of the use of the AI ​​chatbot application regarding the use of technology in learning English and how to practice it through the android application; facilitate participants to learn independently. Furthermore, this activity also sharpens the skills of the participants to create and convey ideas in written communication in English.This activity was carried out through lecture and demonstration methods. Then proceed with direct practice (hands on practice). Demonstration and example methods involve more on parsing and how to demonstrate something through examples or in other words learning by doing or learning by practice which emphasizes learning while practicing, so it's not just a theory. So, trainees were given the opportunity to practice using AI chatbots. In addition, students made a short writing for English conversation with the help of the public service team and students who were involved in this public activity. The results of this training showed that all participants were enthusiastic, happy, and motivated because this application was still unfamiliar to the participants. Participants also have known how to use this application, so they could indirectly learn independently whenever and wherever they are. Abstract

Hasil analisis dan hasil interview secara informal kepada mahasiswa Program Studi Sosiologi Fisip serta pengalaman pengabdi yang juga sebagai pengajar pada program studi ini mengungkap bahwa kemampuan mahasiswa dalam berbicara bahasa Inggris dalam percakapan sehari-hari sangat rendah dan memiliki ketidakmampuan yang variatif sehingga dibutuhkan suatu teknik, strategi, dan model pembelajaran yang bisa merepresentasikan variasi kemampuan mahasiswa dalam berbicara bahasa Inggris yang simpel yang digunakan sehari-hari. Oleh karena itu, dilakukan pengabdian dalam bentuk pelatihan berbicara bahasa Inggris yang simpel melalui modifikasi dan pengembangan model pembelajaran Pipi-Ku dan Pipi-Mu. Tujuan dari pelatihan ini agar para mahasiswa semakin lebih bergairah belajar, senang karena memiliki kebebasan mengungkapkan bahasa Inggris yang dimiliki sesuai apa yang tertera pada gambar. Hasil pelatihan menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa bersemangat, termotivasi, dan merasa senang sehingga mereka berkreasi untuk mengomentari sesuai apa yang ada di gambar tersebut meskipun tata bahasa Inggris mereka masih kurang sempurnah. Dengan memberikan media gambar untuk dikomentari dalam bahasa Inggris secara bebas dapat menghilangkan rasa ketidakpercayaan pada diri peserta untuk merespon sesuai dengan pengetahuan dan pengalaman yang dimiliki sebelumnya. Selain daripada itu, model pelatihan ini secara tidak langsung menciptakan pembelajaran otonomi para peserta pelatihan.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out if applying Dictogloss technique can improve writing skills of eighth-grade students. The researcher applied pre-experimental research design. One hundred and thirty seven students of SMPN 5 Palu took part in this research, and class VIII A which consisted of 23 students were selected samples of the research. The data were collected using a test administered twice; it was in the form of a pre-test and a post-test. The data were analyzed statistically. The results of the data analysis showed that the t-counted value (15.3) was higher than that of the t-table (1.717) by applying a significance level of 0.05 with a degree of freedom (df) 22(n-1). This means that the hypothesis is accepted. In other words, applying Dictogloss technique can improve writing skills of eighth-grade students of SMPN 5 Palu.

Abstract

This research aimed to identification and analysis students’ ability and difficulties in writing descriptive text. This research used qualitative descriptive methods. The research subject are X grade students of Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 1 Palu. The research took 20 students as sample. This research used interview and test to collect the data. The result of this research shows the students’ ability, the students’ difficulty in writing descriptive text and the factors students’ difficulties in writing descriptive texts. The difficulties are difficulties in generic structure, difficulties in grammar, and difficulties in mechanic, while the factors that cause the students’ difficulties in writing descriptive text are lack of proficiency in the text production skills, and lack of interest in learning English

Abstract

The objectives of this research are (1) to find out the strategies that the English teachers use in teaching reading comprehension at SMP Labschool Palu, (2) to find out the reasons why the English teachers chose the strategies in teaching reading comprehension. The subject of this research all the English teachers at SMP Labschool Palu. This research was descriptive qualitative research. The technique of collecting data were questionnaire and interview. The researcher analyzed the data by using descriptive qualitative research. The result of this research showed that there were five strategies mostly used by the English teachers in teaching reading comprehension to be applied in the classroom. There were (monitoring comprehension, recognizing story structure, question answer relationship, graphic and semantic organizers, and summarizing). Based on the analysis of interview to the teachers, those strategies can help the teachers because the students more active and the students could exchange their opinion with their friends.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the grammatical errors and the dominant error written by the tenth-grade students of SMA Karuna Dipa Palu in the academic year 2021/2022 in writing recount text. The researchers used the descriptive qualitative design. The subject of this research was all the tenth-grade students of SMA Karuna Dipa Palu which consisted of 32 students. In collecting the data, the researchers used test as the instrument. The researchers analyzed the data by using error analysis. The result of the research showed that the students made 412 errors in their recount texts which are classified into: simple past tense (34.7%), preposition (6.1%), pronoun (3.9%), spelling (10.7%), and punctuation (44.7%). The dominant error is punctuation. The dominant errors occurred because the students pay less attention to the use of good and correct punctuation. They are apathetic to the use of punctuation.

Abstract

The focus of the problems for this research are: (1) Determining the form of code-switching in communication in the community of Gunung Bale Village, Donggala, (2) The factors causing code-switching in communication among the community of Gunung Bale Village, Donggala. The aims of this study are (1) to describe the form of code-switching in communication among the community of Gunung Bale Village, Donggala, (2) to describe the factors that cause code-switching in communication in the community of Gunung Bale Village, Donggala. This study uses a qualitative method. The process of obtaining data and data sources Is through oral data in the community of Gunung Bale Village, Donggala. Data collection techniques used are recording technique, observing technique, and note-taking techniques Data analysis techniques through the process of (1) data collection, (2) data reduction, and (3) data verification. The results showed that the forms of code-switching from the results of this study are the internal form of code-switching in the form of code-switching from Bugis to Indonesian, the external code-switching in the form of (1) code-switching from Indonesian to Kaili, Undepu dialect, (2) code-switching from Kaili, Undepu dialect to Indonesian. The factors that caused code-switching to Kaili, Undepu dialect in the Gunung Bale Village community, Donegal, are (1) speaker factors, (2) speech partner factors, (3) third-person presence factors, and (4) topic change factors.

Abstract

This study focuses on sociolinguistics analysis towards the use of code switching produced by instructors in English teaching and learning (ELT) process. This study applied qualitative method and records the process of teaching English and interviews the instructors and students as a technique of this research to find the importance of code switching. The data were transcribed and analyzed use the concepts of Wardhaugh and Suwito about types of code switching and functions of code switching use the concept of Margana. The result shows that that there are 4 types of code switching used by instructors in English teaching and learning process. They are extern, intern, metaphorical and situational code switching.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the most dominant types of errors made by students in transforming active English sentences into passive sentences and to find out the causes of students making errors. The subjects of this study were class XII students of SMAN 1 Bungku Tengah. The samples are 24 students were taken using convenience sampling. This study used qualitative research and data collection using tests items and interviews. The data were identified, classified, and analyzed based on surface strategy taxonomy of Dulay’s theory, namely error of omission with percentage 25,13%, the error of addition with percentage 6,81%, the error of misformation with percentage 65,45% which was established as the dominant error, and error of misordering with percentage 2,62%. Based on the results of interviews, the causes of errorness were, 1) Students did not understand the formula according to tenses, 2) Students were still confused about the use of "to be", 3) Students still lacked vocabulary.
