Abstract

This study tried to re-examine the the significant role of literature as readingmaterials in class, and the appropriateness of involving students in teaching andlearning process in which they were supposed to provide reading materials forclass discussions. With the text provided by the students, hopefully they would beencouraged to read; thereby increasing their reading interests. However, the twocycleaction research revealed that such learning and teaching processes did notcontribute to improving their reading preferences. Interestingly the seemingly lessinterests in reading did not have any effects on their reading scores. There weresignificant increases in the pre-test and the post-test, indicating that the studentsstill managed to read the texts for good scores. It is therefore recommended thatthe use of authentic texts in line with the students’ major be still preferable.

Abstract

Teens are identical with instability and anxiety for which they need to express as their individual self-actualization. So far there have been no such efforts to accommodate their needs through literary works. The current study explores the dictions employed in English poems written by the students (identified as teens) of English Letters Study Program to find about how far a poem can be as a means for teens to express their feelings. The subjects were assigned to write poems of their interests. The 32 poems were then analyzed and interpreted to find out how most students expressed their anxieties in terms of love to parents, love to boy/girlfriends, friendship, hope, admiration, disappointment, encouragement, divinity and educational goals. The findings indicate that they turn out to be able to write poems when they are emotionally touched. In particular, they employed a limited range of lexical items to express their love to their parents, boy/girlfriends, in addition to love to their college in pursuit of their educational goals. As the general practice of teaching literature ending up with the students’ analyzing literary works, it is high time that they were assigned to write poems to express their feelings. Keywords: anxieties, poem, love, emotionally touched

Abstract

The current study was aimed at investigating the struggle of Charley Pride through his song lyric entitled “This Bed’s Not Big Enough” employing a mixed approach of literary and systemic-functional perspectives to save his marriage in an alternative. The marital problem may go even worst when the memories linger in bed, calling his or her ex’s name on sexual encounters. This really hurts, and may or may not end in a divorce depending on the wife's decision. Upon completion of systemic functional linguistic analysis to construe the meaning of the song, it turns out that the song lyric managed to create a discursive practice that most people would experience when encountered in the same situational context. The solution varies from one individual to another pertinent to one's social and educational background. Therefore, to further confirm the research findings, a supplementary survey to twenty male colleagues (husbands) was conducted to reveal their attitude- moral values and judgments on both implicit and explicit intentions of the song, to extrinsically relate them to a social and religious domain (value). The findings show that alternative solutions differ from one individual to another depending on social, educational and religious backgrounds.

Abstract

The current study investigated Bimbos Song lyric entitled Belalang in a Discourse Perspective. It has come to be known that Bimbo is a senior music group, specializing in deep philosophical touches of romantic songs. Belalang is a song attempting to create an analog of an insect (mantis) with special mating behaviors to human love affairs tied in dangerous wedlock. The lyric was analyzed in two ways, (1) to find out the field, tenor and mode of the discourse, employing the analytical framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) in a macro sense, and (2) to find out the eco-psychological phenomena, employing the analytical framework of eco-psychology. The findings show that both mantis (with its special mating behavior) and humans (in showing true love to the destructive wife) have a similar patternto preserve the ecosystem or in other words to create a conducive environment. The moral teaching seems to support the old saying that to love does not necessarily own despite the presence of love-chemistry. A seemingly peaceful marital life has to come to its end due to an unexpected mystical curse of Bahu Laweyan. Yet, secondary love can be made possible in search of peaceful lives, to avoid self-destruction.

Abstract

The current study investigated a song lyric entitled “Lily” in terms of its generic structure to come up with the rhetorical strategies—how satanic tricks influence people through human greed. Lily belongs to a lyric considered a narrative poem. It is theorized that a narrative poem is a poem or possibly a lyric which consists of orientation, complication and resolution. In other words, a lyric is structured as such to produce rhetorical strategies (goals) which were analyzed employing Aristotle’s ethos, logos and pathos.  Meanwhile, in the complication analysis of Lily, not only did the study employ psychological theory but was also supported by social contexts to describe how satanic tricks were made use through human greed engineering in achieving the goal of negative thoughts generating. The findings indicate that human minds are in fact guided by both angels and satans. Angels guide any individual (Lily) to stay in track of the positive values while Satan whispers tricks to divert from the positive path toward the negative values by means of human greed. To confirm the findings, a survey was administered to 90 purposefully-selected teenagers in Semarang Municipality only to find that “Lily“ song lyrics failed to give any answer to the question whether or not she (Lily) can be saved despite her frequent calls for help.

Abstract

The current study reports Year One of a Two-Year Research Project on manifestation of Islamic values and local wisdoms to anticipate Society 5.0. A survey questionnaire was administered to 39 subjects consisting of students of Sultan Agung Islamic University Semarang enrolled in Basic Culture Course in order to grasp their profiles in terms of S (Strength) W (Weakness) O (Opportunity) and T (Threat) with respect to Islamic values and local wisdoms. It turns out that all students show their strength, namely being aware of the Islamic values and local wisdoms positively contributing to the success of the future career as soft skills. However, their weakness is that they master knowledge of Islamic values and local wisdoms only at cognitive level. In practice rules are violated. Opportunity is open for them since they are still at college with rooms for advancement and improvement. Meanwhile, the threat is that they may be influenced by the negative impact of cyber information providers within disruption of digital manufacture unless it is anticipated by equipping them with manifestation of Islamic values and local wisdoms to successfully survive in Society 5.0 in which people shall govern technology and not otherwise. Keywords: Islamic values, local wisdoms, soft skills, society 5.0, digital manufacture

Abstract

ABSTRACT Studies have found that engaging with poetry through poetry reading helps individuals develop positive outlook in life and cope with difficult experience. Poetry has a unique ability to express complex emotions, making it useful for building resilience. This study aims to explore how poetry especially Islamic poetry could serve as a cultural resilience strategy during the pandemic. Cultural resilience refers to the unique way cultural backgrounds such as values, norms, supports, language, and customs can help facilitate an individual or a community to overcome adversity (Clauss-Ehler, 2004). This present study employed reader-response method, involving 21 student-readers who attended Poetry class at Sultan Agung Islamic University, Indonesia. The class was conducted during the Covid-19 pandemic. Three plague-themed Islamic poems were introduced in the poetry reading, such as: The Cholera (1974) by Al-Malaika, The Black Death Plague (1348) by Ibn al-Wardi, and The Night Visitor (c.960) by Al-Mutannabi. This study found that reading poetry positively affected students who have genuine interest in aesthetic reading. The enjoyment in poetry reading could serve as a protective factor for the readers through three major mechanisms: a reminder to the Islamic concept of qadr or preordainment, the consciousness cultivation of pandemics as a shared experience, and the development of empathy out of those experiences. Keywords: Cultural Resilience, Covid-19 Pandemic, Islamic Poetry, Plague, Readers’ response. Kelas diadakan selama pandemi Covid-19.
