Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic period was a special condition that caused different learning drawbacks and learning losses in the achievement of student competencies. In addition to learning losses, many national and international studies state that Indonesia has also experienced a learning crisis for a long time. Therefore, it is necessary to change the curriculum so that educational institutions are able to improve the quality of education. This research was conducted to improve the understanding of teachers as participants in the independent learning curriculum training. This study found that teachers’ understanding increased significantly after being given training on the independent learning curriculum. The results of this study imply that intensive training is needed on the concept of implementing the independent learning curriculum so that teachers can carry out more effective learning.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to investigate the essay-writing skills of students in Indonesian education institutions. A descriptive study approach was used to collect data from a group of students. Students were given three topics to choose from and were instructed to write academic essays within a certain time range. The student writings were gathered and scored using a scoring rubric that assessed several components of the essays. The data obtained were statistically analysed using descriptive analysis to describe the students’ essay writing skills. According to the findings of this study, the majority of students performed modestly on the writing test, with some performing better than others. The research found that the students struggled with organization and consistency, while their grammar and word usage still required to be improved. The study highlights the importance of enhancing students' writing skills to a higher level

Abstract

Vocabulary development is critical from both a theoretical and a practical point of view. Vocabulary is a central factor in the process of language learning. This research is based on the idea that students are required to use English in daily interactions in the school's language program. Therefore, learning English vocabulary is crucial for improving students’ language skills. Teachers must know the students' abilities before conducting the learning activities. This study used ex post facto research design to reveal students’ vocabulary ability by conducting sentence construction tests. The study found that students' vocabulary is at a sufficient level. Therefore, students are required to improve their vocabulary to a higher level. This study highlights that various vocabulary activities should be intensified in the classroom to build up students’ active vocabulary and enable them to speak communicatively.

Abstract

Speaking is one of the most important language skills to be mastered. Speaking is a person's ability to express or express ideas and thoughts within oneself that involve others in conveying this information using words. This research examined the assessment practiced by the teachers in assessing speaking skills. This research method is a qualitative method where the data were analyzed critically and presented descriptively. Data required for this study were collected through interviews and classroom observations. This study found that teachers conducted various assessments to assess students’ speaking skills. Assessment becomes highly powerful tool in improving the quality of learning. Consequently, careful considerations should be taken into account to carry out valid and reliable assessment. This study implies that teachers should always consider the appropriate assessment to be carried out in the classroom to measure the students’ speaking skills and use the results for learning and teaching improvement
