Abstract

This research aimed to determine undergraduate students’ problems and factors causing the problems in writing a research proposal. Ninety-one English Education Study Program undergraduate students in FKIP Universitas Tanjungpura, Pontianak, West Kalimantan, participated in this research. This descriptive research used forty items in a questionnaire as the instrument modified from Dwihandini, Marhaeni, and Suarnajaya’s (2013) model. The model utilized three factors causing students’ problems in writing a research proposal, namely (1) psychological factors, (2) socio-cultural factors, and (3) linguistic factors. To report the findings of the results, the researcher used the descriptive statistics technique to display each factor's percentage score. The findings indicated that the score of linguistic factors got the highest (75,49%), which highly affected students' writing in research proposals. The conclusion is each factor causes problems, so it affects students in writing a research proposal, and linguistic factors become the dominant factor among others.

Abstract

This study aimed to design supplementary materials in the form of an e-book based on the genre-based approach for students’ learning of writing explanatory text. It was undertaken by the development research method and ADDIE concept (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, Evaluate) with the exclusion of the Implement and Evaluate phases. The participants of this study were the eleventh-grade students, an English teacher at SMAN 01 Seponti, and the researcher’s supervisors. The instruments of data collection were observation, interview, document, and questionnaire. Based on need analysis results, the compulsory textbook used by the teacher was not in line with the students’ needs and interests, particularly in the explanatory text content. After the e-book was entirely designed and developed, the researcher inquired about an internal evaluation to supervisors and the English teacher. The results represent that the e-book is in the ‘very good’ category for all the criteria, namely its general appearance, layout and design, methodology, activities, language skills, language content, topic content, teachability and flexibility, and assessment, with the percentage of 93,33%, 93,33%, 93,33%, 86,67%, 93,33%, 93,33%, 93,33%, 86,67%, 80%, respectively. This shows that the e-book is feasible for the students to learn and practice their writing of the explanatory text.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the challenges faced by teachers in integrating digital media in EFL classrooms and explore their innovative solutions to overcome them. Data were derived from interviews with teachers who attempted to incorporate digital media in a variety of situations. Official documents, including local and national government regulations, school websites, school YouTube channels, and lesson plans supplemented the interview data. The results revealed that teachers faced challenges such as lack of competence, deficient teaching materials, and inadequate digital teaching skills when attempting to integrate technology into their classroom. Limitations of infrastructures, such as low internet bandwidth and a scarcity of devices available in their schools were also reported as additional contributing challenges. Despite the difficult circumstances, evident in the study were teachers’ willingness and efforts to make use of a diverse array of technology devices and applications in their classrooms. These included projectors, laptops, smartphones, audio speakers, as well as software such as word processors, PowerPoint, Google Classroom, Hot Potatoes, search engines, WhatsApp, Zoom, Google Meet, online dictionaries, YouTube, and video editors. This study sheds light on the resilience and resourcefulness of EFL teachers in adapting to digital media and offers insights into ways to support and enhance their efforts.

Abstract

To improve their competence and professionalism, teachers must always reflect on the learning process that they conduct, which is documented in the form of scientific papers called Classroom Action Research (CAR). The knowledge of teachers, especially elementary school teachers, regarding CAR is still very limited. Therefore, the PKM team of English Education Study Program lecturers carried out PKM activities on CAR. The purpose of this activity was to provide teachers with an understanding of the importance of CAR and how to conduct it. The activity was carried out using lecture, question and answer, and discussion methods. This activity took place for two days and was attended by 50 representatives of elementary school teachers in Sambas Regency. The results of the activity showed that the teachers were very enthusiastic and actively asked questions during the presentation and actively participated in group discussions. From the discussions and presentations, it was found that elementary school teachers in Sambas Regency were able to reflect on their classroom teaching to identify problems encountered in class, found the causes and solutions to the problems.
