Abstract

This work aims to investigate an Indonesian EFL student’s perceptions and experiences in repeatedly doing standardized English language proficiency test: TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) and TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). This standardized test has a significant role in the academic and professional lives of students (Anam, 2019); it contributes positively to students’ language proficiency and their future employment if they have higer and valid score in the test (Hsieh, 2017). This present study interviewed an Indonesian EFL student at a National University in Taiwan running an international program. The study participant passed the exam, but she did it repeatedly before she could pass it. This study used a qualitative phenomenological approach with an in-depth interview. The relevant findings illustrate that the participant reveals the reasons for failing the test: lack of self-awareness, lack of self-confidence, and the distance of the test venue from her dormitory. On the contrary, she passed the test by doing online simulation exam individually and modifying her study skills while preparing for the test. The failure process had a positive impact on her in making her to know her ability.

Abstract

The internship program provides students with a good experience developing their potential to prepare themselves to work in the future. This paper focuses on looking at students' experiences in carrying out internships in a hotel in rural areas far from the center of the crowd. This qualitative study aims to examine the experiences of undergraduate tourism students conducting an internship program which approximately three months to see the reality of world work at a hotel. The study was designed with a descriptive qualitative method to study the participants’ experiences. This study conducted the data through focus group discussions and a semi-structured interview. The data obtained were analyzed through transcribing, coding, managing, and interpreting. This study involved four undergraduate tourism students aged twenty-one to twenty-three years old. This study revealed the benefits and the challenges they got through the internship program at the hotel. The benefits include learning disciplines, self-development, and gaining new skills. The challenges include adaptation to the skills required in work, such as responsibility, teamwork, and communication, limited days off, and limited public transportation around the internship site. This study concluded that students learned various skills and knowledge at the internship site through guidance from the supervisor and team. As a result, they achieve self-development and skills useful for their career in the future.

Abstract

The reading ability of Elementary students is a series of actions that must be developed so that students are not only good at reading but also able to explore and understand the text of reading books. This study shows that several picture books are an effort to increase elementary school students' reading interest. The methodology used in this study is a literature review and reports from various journals. To increase students' interest in reading, teachers must use appropriate media to attract students' attention. Picture storybooks have a function to enrich and support storytelling in the process of understanding the contents of the book. Picture books are one of the tools used in the curriculum. Storybooks feature many pictures to tell a story, character, setting, or whatever. This study describes the development of Elementary school picture storybooks and the benefits of using storybooks as a media in teaching elementary students. The study concludes that students' attraction to develop reading skills and develop previous skills can be done through the use of media, namely the use of stories presented in the media.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has forced stakeholders to find the best way to carry out student learning activities through online learning as the best solution during the pandemic. However, the onsite learning system has been switching slowly in the last few months. The current study summarizes the narratives of the challenges and benefits of four undergraduates from the same major who joined online learning and onsite learning during the Covid-19 pandemic. Through a narrative qualitative, the lens examines the students’ experiences. The instruments are interviews and diary notes of participants during conducting online and onsite learning amidst the pandemic and analyzed qualitatively. The findings showed that the students deal with four challenges: limited devices, lack of enthusiasm, anxiety, and unexpected disturbance during online learning. Meanwhile, the benefits save time, and cost, are easy to access, and students can learn independently. Moreover, this learning might help the student to become problem solvers and critical thinkers through task-solving activities and learning responsibilities. It also opens opportunities for students to better understand their own abilities in learning. Pengalaman, tantangan, dan keterlibatan di tengah pandemic: Pembelajaran online hingga pembelajaran luringPandemi Covid-19 memaksa para pemangku kepentingan untuk mencari cara terbaik dalam melaksanakan kegiatan belajar siswa melalui pembelajaran online sebagai solusi terbaik di masa pandemi. Namun, sistem pembelajaran di tatap muka telah beralih perlahan dalam beberapa bulan terakhir. Penelitian ini merangkum narasi perihal tantangan dan manfaat dari empat mahasiswa dari jurusan yang sama yang mengikuti pembelajaran online dan pembelajaran di tempat selama pandemi Covid-19. Instrumen yang digunakan berupa wawancara dan catatan harian peserta selama melakukan pembelajaran daring dan luring di tengah pandemi dan dianalisis secara kualitatif. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa siswa menghadapi empat tantangan: perangkat terbatas, kurangnya antusiasme, kecemasan, dan gangguan tak terduga selama pembelajaran online. Sedangkan keuntungannya adalah menghemat waktu, dan biaya, mudah diakses, dan siswa dapat belajar secara mandiri. Selain itu, pembelajaran ini dapat mendukung siswa untuk menjadi sosok pemecah masalah dan pemikir kritis melalui kegiatan pemecahan tugas dan tanggung jawab belajar. Hal ini juga membuka kesempatan bagi siswa untuk lebih memahami kemampuannya sendiri dalam belajar.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the problem of rampant bullying that is currently happening in the community without exception, with the rampant bullying that often occurs among students, seen explicitly by researchers. Therefore, researchers are interested in exploring bullying. Based on the description above, it is necessary to conduct research. The writer is interested in analyzing the representation of bullying in the novel, "And the Rain Stopped by Farida Susanty, through a literary, sociological approach." The researcher categorized into sub-problems to be more focused: (1) What are the forms and impacts of bullying in the novel "And the Rain Stopped by Farida Susanty"? (2) What are the factors or causes of bullying in the novel "And the Rain Stopped by Farida Susanty"?. The research method is descriptive qualitative. The research data are in the form of words, phrases, and sentences that contain representations of bullying in the novel by Farida Susanty, namely what forms of bullying, factors or causes of bullying, and the impact of bullying. The novel contains categories of verbal/verbal bullying and psychological and physical bullying.

Abstract

Peningkatan kemandirian ekonomi Desa Barusjahe melalui pendampingan inovasi produk ramuan tradisional oukup dan minyak kusuk karo dilaksanakan bersama masyarakat Desa Barusjahe Kabupaten Karo. Kegiatan ini merupakan sebuah Gerakan Nasional Revolusi Mental dengan lingkup kegiatan Gerakan Indonesia Mandiri yang dimulai sejak bulan Agustus sampai bulan Oktober 2022. Adapun rangkaian kegiatan GNRM yang dilaksanakan berupa rapat persiapan kegiatan, pendampingan workshop packaging untuk cenderamata khas Kabupaten Karo, pendampingan workshop UMKM dan promosi, kegiatan penanaman pohon dan rapat penyusunan luaran dan laporan akhir. Adapun metode yang dilaksanakan adalah a) Mendata warga yang akan berpartisipasi pada kegiatan GNRM ini, serta memberikan penjelasan terkait program Gerakan Nasional Revolusi Mental bersama masyarakat yang akan dijalankan selama dua bulan ke depan b) Melakukan pendampingan workshop packaging untuk cendramata khas kabupaten Karo, penjelasan terkait pengemasan produk dan pemberian merk produk agar dapat dipasarkan dan dijadikan sebagai cenderamata khas Kabupaten Karo c) Melaksanakan pendampingan workshop pembentukan UMKM dan Promosi, bertujuan untuk meningkatkan promosi inovasi produk Desa BarusJahe d) Melakukan kegiatan penanaman pohon, bibit pohon yang ditanam merupakan komposisi dari ramuan tradisional oukup dan minyak kusuk karo e) Melakukan rapat penyusunan luaran dan laporan akhir, yang merupakan luaran dan laporan akhir dari rangkaian kegiatan program GNRM yang telah berjalan di Desa Barusjahe Kabupaten Karo. Output yang diharapkan dari kegiatan GNRM ini adalah perekonomian masyarakat Desa Barusjahe terus berkembang dengan semangat masyarakat Desa Barusjahe untuk terus berinovasi melalui produk ramuan tradisional oukup dan minyak kusuk karo serta mengajak masyarakat luas untuk meningkatkan pemanfaatan obat tradisional ramuan oukup dan minyak musuk karo.

Abstract

Kurikulum dijadikan sebagai acuan dan wadah dalam mencapai tujuan pendidikan. Kurikulum Merdeka pada dasarnya berpusat pada peserta didik. Pendidik diharapkan dapat bertindak sebagai mediator, fasilitator, dan motivator yang dapat meningkatkan kualitas dan kuantitas siswa untuk menggapai hasil yang maksimal. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk menganalisis penerapan kurikulum merdeka belajar di Sekolah Menengah Atas (SMA) dengan menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif yang diuraikan secara deskriptif melalui penelitian kepustakaan. Data pada penelitian ini bersumber dari artikel, buku, dan penelitian terdahulu yang selaras dengan topik pembahasan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya pengembangan kurikulum yang disesuaikan dengan kebutuhan zaman dan lebih berfokus pada kebutuhan peserta didik serta berorientasi pada Proyek Profil Pelajar Pancasila. Pengimplementasian kurikulum merdeka belajar berdampak positif dalam mengembangkan potensi dan meningkatkan kualitas pendidikan di Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to determine teachers' pedagogical competence in increasing students' motivation to learn Bahasa Indonesia. To find this out, the approach used in this research is qualitative, a description method with observational research instruments or observations and interviews with students and teachers. The research participants were Bahasa Indonesia teachers and several SMA Negeri 3 Medan students. The study found that some teachers understand the characteristics of students because there are still teachers who generalize learning and need to understand student learning styles. The teachers in SMA Negeri 3 Medan have been able to design lesson plans (RPP) with innovative learning models. Not all teachers carry out learning according to the lesson plan (RPP) previously designed. In addition, some educators have yet to be able to assess or evaluate learning authentically. All teachers play a role in developing students so that they can actualize the potential of students.

Abstract

Pelita Harapan Orphanage has endeavored to nurture and care for the children in various aspects, including education, physical health, and spiritual development. However, the educational services in the orphanage face a major problem related to the limited number and educational backgrounds of the caregivers, which hinder the nurturing process in the orphanage. The formal education received by the foster children is still considered insufficient in enhancing their character and skills to meet future demands. The informal learning in the orphanage has not undergone updates like those implemented in modern schools today, thus not providing optimal improvement in the learning abilities and character of the children in the orphanage. To address this issue, a soft skills approach is implemented to shape the character and develop the skills of the orphanage children. This approach involves a learning and character-building process through engaging and motivating activities that encourage critical thinking and exploration of new things. This process also adheres to ethical values, local wisdom, understanding of national diversity, and care for the environment. This research aims to enhance the soft skills of the children in Pelita Harapan Orphanage, with a focus on building a strong character, developing social and intellectual skills, and preparing them to face a complex future. The research methodology involves preparation, problem identification, observation in the orphanage, and interviews with relevant parties. With the soft skills approach, it is expected that the children in Pelita Harapan Orphanage can become resilient individuals capable of critical thinking, creativity, and innovation in facing various unpredictable situations and conditions. Through a combination of attitude, knowledge, and skills competencies, the foster children have the potential to maximize their self-development and make positive contributions to society.

Abstract

The development of digital technology is closely related to developments in the world of education. This is because the rapid development of technology is very influential in the development of information and communication, so this provides positive benefits that can be utilized in the world of education. To produce effective learning, varied learning media are needed. This article's development of varied learning utilizes the Canva application at the elementary school level. Canva is one of the many applications that can be used to design varied learning media. As a facilitator in the learning process, the teacher's job is to present meaningful and enjoyable learning so that it can make students become more focused and arouse their thinking in order to encourage students to be motivated to learn to become students who have superior human resources and have the profile of Pancasila students.
