Abstract

Abstract

Abstract: Human skin color is determined by melanin pigment, either eumelanin or feomelanin.Melanogenesis is a melanin synthesized process that is initiated with tirosin oxidation to DOPAquinoneby tirosinase, and then auto-oxidation to DOPA and DOPAchrome. Eumelanin are formed fromDOPAchrome, while pheomelanin from DOPAquinone with the presence of cysteine or gluthathione.Hyperpigmentation disorders like melasma, are difficult to treat especially in dark skinned individuals.Treatment of melasma can be topical or physical. Topical agent can use depigmenting agent, eitherindividual or combination with other. Depigmenting agent can be melanotoxic or toxic to melanocytewhich can be cell killing or cell damage. Hydroquinone, monomethyl of hydroqunone, N-acetyl-4-Scysteaminylphenol ,and azelaic acid are depigmenting agents melanotoxic. Majority of those agents actas tirosinase inhibitors which cause deactivation of tirosinase. The use of those agents in combinationare better to minimalize side effect of agents.

Abstract

Several studies regarding the quality of life of chronic spontaneous urticaria patients based on Autologous Serum Skin Test (ASST) results have shown a variety of results. This study aims to determine the correlation between the quality of life and ASST results in chronic spontaneous urticaria patients at Dermatology and Venereology (DV) Outpatient Clinic of Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang. This analytic observational study with a cross-sectional design used secondary data in the form of medical records. 76 samples met the inclusion criteria from 110 samples of chronic spontaneous urticaria patients at DV outpatient clinic. The distribution of chronic spontaneous urticaria patients was highest in the 17-25 year age group (23.7%) and the female group (64.5%). The majority of chronic spontaneous urticaria patients had negative ASST results (52.6%). The effect of chronic spontaneous urticaria on the decline in quality of life was mostly moderate (35.5%). The bivariate analysis between DLQI score and ASST results with a value of p = 0.307 or p> 0.05 showed no significant correlation between the quality of life and ASST results.

Abstract

Background: Xerosis and pruritus (XP) are the most common skin conditions in the elderly, manifesting clinically as roughness, scales, fissures, and mild-to-severe itching. Vitamin D improves skin hydration, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and regulates the immune system. We aimed to determine the efficiency of topical 7-dehydrocholesterol (DHC)-vitamin D3 complex cream in elderly patients with XP. Methods: An experimental phase III study was performed on elderly women with XP from December 2021 to March 2022 at the Geriatric Dermatology Clinic of Dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital, Palembang. Inclusion criteria were age older than 55 years, healthy or with comorbidity. The exclusion criteria include the use of moisturizer within two weeks before the study. DHC-vitamin D3 cream was applied on subject’s volar arms once a day. Overall dry skin score (ODSS), visual analog scale (VAS) for pruritus and adverse effects, skin hydration, TEWL, sebum level, serum vitamin D level, and dermatology life quality index (DLQI) were assessed at baseline and after 4 weeks. Statistical analysis was done with Wilcoxon and paired T-test. Results:Eighteen elderly women were included. Most subjects were 60 to 74 years old (83,3%). Half the subjects (50%) had comorbidity. There was a significant difference in skin hydration (p Conclusion: Topical 7-DHC vitamin D3 complex cream is proven to improve skin barriers, increase serum vitamin D levels, well-tolerated, and provided satisfaction and comfort in elderly women with XP.

Abstract

Waste has been a part of human life since the beginning of civilization. Waste is the end result of activities carried out by humans and nature that are wasted and do not have economic value. Waste problems mainly occur in urban areas because of high population density and activity and are problems that are difficult to overcome and require proper handling. Conventional waste handling by collecting, transporting and disposing to landfills (TPS) has not been able to solve the waste problem completely, therefore innovation is needed in handling and processing waste as a whole so that it has a positive impact on the health of the environment and the economy of the community. One of the innovations or alternative solutions in handling waste is through community empowerment, namely by forming a waste bank. The program is integrating the principles of 3R in waste management (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) will make community empowerment more effective and efficient by creating creative ideas in processing waste. The government of Surabaya, as one of the second largest cities in Indonesia with a high population density has quite complex waste problems. Several programs have been carried out to deal with the waste problem, including through community empowerment by involving government participation. Here, we use a qualitative descriptive method that aims to convey facts about waste management by empowering the community and the impact of implementing the program both from an economic and environmental standpoint, especially in the Surabaya area. The research shows that changing something from zero value things requires high collaboration and creativity which is shown by the handling of waste through a waste bank program with creative ideas of the community and the participation of the government that have had a positive impact, for everyone, environment and nation in the future.
