Abstract

This research aims at analyzing the ellipsis and its recoverability in T3 gadget magazine issued on December 2018 based on Swan?s (1996) and Quirk?s (1985) domains of ellipsis. This qualitative-descriptive research investigated 107 clauses found in the advertisement containing 509 ellipses. The data were gathered by close and careful reading and coded using a checklist table developed based on the domains of ellipsis. The research found that ellipsis type 2 (ellipsis structured with and, but and or) were dominant in the data as the omission aimed to avoid repetition and be concise. There were only 2 out of 14 ellipsis types which were absent, namely type 6 and 14. The ellipsis types that were being analyzed happened to have three types of recoverability, namely textual, structural, and situational recoverability. The majority of the data used textual recoverability or the recoverability parts are recovered by the other part within the clause or nearby clauses. This research discusses the interface between syntax and semantics that although the syntactic forms are changed through ellipsis, users can still recover the meanings.

Abstract

This paper aims at analyzing how gender-specific neologisms in Indonesian are formed and how they conceptualize gender in the community. Neologisms containing gender marked features from online media are extracted. They are classified based on the forms and the word formation processes. The researchers conduct a careful examination on how the semantic components in the neologisms conceptualize gender in the society. The researchers categorized the word formation processes of gender marked neologisms, consisting of 92 data samples, into seven word formation processes, starting from the least up to the most frequent processes, namely metaphor, reverse, acronym, diminutive, initialism, borrowing and blend/clipping compound. The results showed that blends or clipping compounds were formed from English, Indonesian and local languages, such as Javenese, as in the English-Indonesian bohay (‘body’ and aduhay ‘sexy’) to refer to a ‘sexy female body’. These new words semantically ground on social dimensions carrying several attributes, namely: emotional, financial, physical, sexual, and financial attributes. Instead of serving as an act of empowerment, some neologisms, as argued in the findings, reflect negative stigma to particular genders.

Abstract

This paper is carried out to find out the attitudinal resources used by students in Play Performance class through appraisal framework (Martin & White, 2005). It focuses on how the students negotiate attitudes to express their feelings, judgements, and appreciation of “Of Mice and Men” production process. The data for this qualitative study were collected from students’ reflections which were selected purposely from different production and artistic divisions. It analyses 109 expressions based on three domains of attitudinal resources in the appraisal theory. The most frequently used resources are affect resources that serve to express students’ positive or negative feelings. The findings show that although students experience a certain degree of insecurity [-security], they reveal positive inclination [+inclination] towards the production process. The judgement and appreciation resources are used to evaluate the behavior and learning processes. The discussion demonstrates that this systemic functional linguistic framework works as a solid basis to analyze students’ reflections. This study implies that the appraisal framework can be one of the considerations in evaluating learners’ performance.

Abstract

Growing discussion related to gender differences and language includes studies on discourse markers. Not only do these markers play an important role in spoken communication, but they are also important in written one. Previous studies (Tse Hyland, 2008; Yeganeh and Ghoreyshi, 2015) reveal that there are some discrepancies among scholar whether gender differences influence the use of language, including the choice of discourse markers. Moreover, gender differences and the use of textual discourse markers by Indonesian EFL students in EFL essays have not been extensively discussed. Therefore, this study aimed at elaborating the use of textual discourse markers in male and female students essays. This study involved 40 essays, 20 essays written by female students and 20 essays written by male students. Those essays were selected randomly from Critical Reading and Writing 1 (CRW 1) courses. The study aimed at analyzing the differences and similarities in the use of discourse markers between female and male students essays based on Frasers classifications (1999) of textual discourse markers. Finally, this research concluded the discussion by giving some implication which can be applied in writing classes. Keywords: gender, writing essays, discourse markers

Abstract

Bearing in mind the interplay between beliefs and professional identities, constantly re-examining teachers’ beliefs is deemed to be significant in teachers’ identity formation. However, not much attention has been given to pre-service teachers’ beliefs. Through a case study, this research sought to reveal some beliefs held by four pre-service teachers doing their teaching practicum at a state junior high school in Yogyakarta. In addition, this study also attempts to describe the interplay between beliefs and the professional identity of those pre-service teachers’. Participants’ reflections, observations, and a focus group discussion were employed in order to figure out the answers to the research questions. The findings show that each of the participants processed the experiences they had in their teaching practicum differently. They started their teaching with pre-existing beliefs that were either confirmed or confronted when they did their practicum. The findings of this study also suggest that the interplay between beliefs and professional identity is complex. Not all beliefs were clearly reflected in the participants’ teaching performances. Some may seem contradictive to their beliefs. It implies that although the participants had sets of beliefs in their minds, teaching itself does not only represent their beliefs, but also serves as a stage where many intertwined factors occur.

Abstract

Conjunctions connect words or phrases of semantic units to guide the writing and reading process. This study aimed at examining EFL learners’ use of conjunctions in writing descriptive texts. This study analyzed (1) the use of conjunctions in students’ descriptive texts and (2) the errors of using conjunctions. The study involved forty-four students’ descriptive texts which were analyzed using a qualitative descriptive method using Halliday and Hasan’s taxonomy (1976) as well as Ong’s framework (2011). We found 417 conjunctions which are classified into additive conjunctions (71.22%), the most common conjunctions used by the students, temporal conjunctions (13.43%), adversative conjunctions (11.99%), and causal conjunctions (3.36%).The predominance of additives denotes that the students added information in describing people. Although the students use these four types of conjunctions, some conjunctions are used inappropriately. We found the errors of conjunctions: misuse errors (42.55%), unnecessary addition errors (40.43%), omission errors (8.51%), and redundant repetition (8.51%). The study of discourse markers is relevant for designing writing materials for EFL students. Teachers can help students enhance their writing through various exposures of different discourse markers with their pragmatic functions.ABSTRAK Konjungsi (kata sambung) menghubungkan kata atau frasa unit semantik untuk yang dapat memudahkan proses penulisan dan membaca. Abstract

Speeches are products of human minds reflecting ideas and opinions of the speakers. Crystal (1987) mentions that the way people use language does not only give us information about their geographical, ethnic and social background, but it also reflects the type of context in which they are communicating. As an interesting feature of a language, metaphors in political speeches can be powerful and persuasive. This research aimed at finding the source domains of political metaphors in Joko Widodos speeches, namely: his victory speech and his inaugural speech. These speeches were chosen to be analyzed due to their distinct context and setting. To achieve the goal of the study, the paper explicated Lakoff and Johnsons Contemporary Theory of Conceptual Metaphor (1980, 1992). The findings and discussion argue that the speeches use more positive metaphors of unity rather than metaphors of battle or competition. Furthermore, the texts also conceptualize Indonesian political realm as a journey and navigation, which give the audience a sense of progress. The maritime metaphors in particular are abundant in the two speeches because they reflect one of Widodos visions to strengthen Indonesian maritime.DOI: https://doi.org/10.24071/llt.2016.190204

Abstract

Polysemy is a well-known fact about language. This study focuses on describing the concept and the extended senses of lexeme hot found in the corpus. The data taken from the corpus show that lexeme hot contains more than one semantic representation. This study aims at finding out the prototypical meaning, the extended senses and the relation between the prototypical meaning and the extended senses. First, the paper discusses the literal meaning of hot from its componential analysis, which will be supported by the Natural Semantic Metalanguage. After elaborating the prototypical meaning of the lexeme hot, this paper elaborates the extended senses of the lexeme and the motivation grounding the various types of these senses. Finally, it analyses the relation of the literal and the extended senses of the word by drawing the semantic networks. This research elaborates 10 extended senses of the word hot found in the corpus. The prototypical meaning of the word indicates a very high degree of temperature. It is a scale used to describe high degree of temperature. The senses of lexeme hot are mostly motivated by metaphoric extension, in which hot is used to describe a scale to measure other things. The relation of the senses enables us to draw the semantic network of the polysemy of lexeme hot.

Abstract

Teaching practice gives students opportunities to learn from their teaching experience in real schools. However, some may experience anxiety because they lack teaching experience. This feeling can pose potential problems to their learning and teaching process. Although anxiety is not considered a new issue, there has been little information as to how Indonesian pre-service teachers experience and overcome anxiety in teaching English as a foreign language. The research aimed at addressing two questions: 1) what are the possible causes of Indonesian pre-service teachers anxiety in teaching English? And 2) how do Indonesian pre-service teachers manage anxiety when teaching English? This research employed both quantitative and qualitative methods. The data were collected from questionnaires and focus group discussion. The results show that several factors contributing to pre-service teachers anxiety, namely: confidence, English skills, preparation, lesson delivery, students profiles, evaluation and classroom management. In tackling the problems, the participants applied personal, professional, social, and institutional coping strategies. Recognizing the causes of anxiety and strategies to face it can be one step forward to reduce teaching anxiety.

Abstract

Gender-related humors have their own way of being funny; and this research aims to find out how and why they are funny. For this purpose, both researchers have collected 50 gender cyber humors and analyzed them, first, to decode how their logical mechanism relates to specific linguistic features, and secondly, to uncover how gender stereotyping contributes to the comical effects. The twisting of logic and linguistic ambiguity is analyzed formally using Attardos (2001) General Theory of Verbal Humor (GTVH) and supported by gender studies. The findings reveal that the logical mechanism consists of elements of incongruities, and gender stereotyping presents negative stereotypical images. The analysis further shows that some gender stereotypical images ridicule traditional roles of man and woman while others make fun of non-traditional representations. This shift from women only to both men and women as targets of gender humors has been an impact of effective feminist movements.
