Abstract

This research aimed to know the factors that influenced elementary students’ self-concept in Jetis Sub District, Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta. The subject of this research consisted of 200 fourth grade students from four different elementary schools in Jetis Sub District. The result showed the fit model with one dimension. The value of each fit parameter of GFI, RMSEA, NFI, IFI, CFI, TLI, and AGFI was 0.958, 0.066, 0.953, 0.976, 0.976, 0.967, and 0.958. All factors or dimensions in self-concept instrument had good reliability by looking at the value of CR ≥ 0,7 categorizing as good reliability, while the value between 0,6 and 0,7 considered to acceptable reliability by underlining that the indicator has load factor that matched the criteria. The internal consistency could be measured by using Average Variance Extracted (AVE). The AVE value that was recommended was ≥ 0,5. This clearly showed that self-concept has validity evidence of internal structure. Moreover, self-concept has convergent and discriminant validity. The self-concept reliability was considered good, so it will give a relatively consistent result when there is re-measurement.

Abstract

The need to communicate through English and the desire to practice English in the teaching process has turned a public junior high school in Wonosobo, Indonesia, into one of the schools that hold an "English on Wednesdays" program to implement bilingual-like nuance. This conceptual paper highlights a natural phenomenon that occurs in that institution dealing with the desire to improve the competence of teachers and students in communication by programming "English on Wednesdays." The dilemmas related to teaching are felt by teachers, especially non-English teachers who do not have an English background, yet they are enthusiastic about this program. Thus, this paper will propose a framework called "The Alternative SIOP Model" that will help teachers overcome the dilemmas in teaching the "English on Wednesdays" program that emphasizes self-efficacy to develop teachers' competencies on lesson preparation and communication. This conceptual paper used the systemic review to gain information from theories and research findings related to the topic. Keywords: teachers' dilemmas; teachers' self-efficacy; the alternative SIOP Model

Abstract

The 21st-century EFL teachers should focus more on students’ real performance, and authentic assessments become the most suitable assessment type that demonstrates students’ knowledge to perform real-world tasks in their real and meaningful context. The objectives of this qualitative study were to reveal the teachers’ beliefs in authentic assessment and propose an authentic assessment model adapted to Gulikers et al.'s five-dimensional framework. This study involved 37 EFL teachers in Indonesia from three education levels. The data were collected through a close-ended questionnaire made online and then analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings of this study showed that teachers believed in the urgency of authentic assessment and the need to have a guideline that could be used to design appropriate authentic assessments. Additionally, by linking up to the need to design an ideal authentic assessment, the writers proposed a framework that not only focuses on the result but also considers the important elements in designing an authentic assessment that not many teachers know. Hopefully, the proposed framework will benefit educators, practitioners, and researchers who need new insight into the procedure to conduct an authentic assessment for their students.

Abstract

It can be denied that teaching vocabulary to ESP students is challenging since they need treatment to learn it on the right target. 21st-century learning requires the students, no exception the ESP students, to fulfill the demands of the 4Cs (Collaboration, Communication, Creativity, and Critical Thinking), which makes students show language competence in the right target. This quantitative study with a one-shot case study aims to explore the knowledge level regarding vocabulary learning using Flash Cards and reveal the students' activities during learning using Flash Cards. Thirty-one participants from one vocational high school were involved in this study. The researchers used two types of instruments, namely, test and observation. The results of this study showed that students’ scores in vocabulary testing indicating their knowledge of language word level were categorized ‘good’ by the mean score of 73.97. Additionally, they showed enthusiasm in learning vocabulary using Flash Card. The role of Flash Cards in teaching vocabulary in ESP classrooms benefits students in grasping the meaning of L2 words that can be used or applied in the language context. Keywords: Teaching Vocabulary; ESP; Flash Card.

Abstract

The students are mostly unmotivated in the EFL reading classrooms since they have problems reading English texts. They feel stressed as they consider themselves alone, readers who cannot understand the text content well. This mixed-method study aimed to (1) investigate the significant difference between the mean scores of the pretest and the post-test in reading using Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) and (2) describe the students' reflections using CSR in the reading classroom. The data were collected by using a pretest-posttest and students' reflection sheets. The participants were 32 students from a private university in Indonesia. The pretest and post-test results indicated that CSR significantly improved students' reading skills in collaborative classrooms. The written reflections showed students were highly motivated to join collaborative reading, as the strategies were beneficial for improving their vocabulary, reading understanding, and critical thinking. This study greatly influences improving students' reading proficiency and social skills.

Abstract

Teaching reading for young learners in this 21st-century learning demands teachers to be creative and consider the educational effect on students through technology-enhanced language learning. Therefore, the characteristics of students categorized as young learners should be considered, so the process of designing teaching scenarios, including the material and media, can be administered right on the target. At this point, teaching reading as one of the parts of literacies in the EFL context challenged teachers to simultaneously build students' reading motivation and ability in this digital era. This mixed-method study involved 31 young learners in one primary school in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. This study had two research questions: 1) How is the student's reading activity during the implementation of Storyberries? And 2) How is the student's reading achievement after being taught using Storyberries? Storyberries, a treatment used in this study, was a free online audiobook that provides many short stories that can be adjusted to readers' age, the duration of reading need, and reading interest. The design used in this study was an Exploratory Sequential Design, where the qualitative method preceded the quantitative one. The instruments used in this study were classroom observation sheets and tests. The three concurrent flows as a triangulation technique were used to analyze the qualitative data, while normality and descriptive statistics using SPSS version 25 were administered to analyze the quantitative data. The study's findings revealed that teachers used good pedagogical aspects to integrate Storyberries into the reading classroom and successfully enhanced students' reading motivation and proficiency. This pedagogical impact is expected to be implemented to the broader scope of teaching reading for young learners' needs. Keywords: Teaching reading; storyberries; young learners
