Abstract

This research aims at finding out the use of Barron’s TOEIC preparation course package to improve the listening of the eleventh grade students at SMK Negeri Tinambung academic year 2010/2011.The objectives of the research were to find out whether or not the use of Barron’s TOEIC preparation course package significantly improves the listening ability of the eleventh grade students at SMK Negeri Tinambung academic year 2010/2011.The research used quasi experimental research design. The samples consisted of 50 students which belonged to two groups; experimental group and control group. The research data were collected using two the listening test was given to the both groups. The research results indicated that the use of Barron’s TOEIC preparation course package significantly improved the listening ability of the eleventh grade students at SMK Negeri Tinambung academic year 2010/2011. The results of posttest of both groups were improved, but the use of Barron’s TOEIC preparation course package was more improved than English in Progress Business & Management for SMK Year XI: TOEIC based Activities, By Munash F. Anwar. It was proved by the result of mean score of posttest of the experimental was higher than the control group in listening (85.00 > 79.40).

Abstract

The research aimed at finding out whether or not using of authentic materials through communicative approach improves the vocabulary of the students. This applied a pre-experimental method. The population of the research was the second grades students of a state high school comprising four classes and one of which chosen as the sample by using purposive sampling. The sample consisted of thirty two. The data were collected by using vocabulary test that consisted 20 items. The proce4 of collecting data was presented in chronological order as pre-test given before treatment and then post-test was giving after treatment as students’ achievement. The data analysis showed that there was significant difference of the students’ vocabulary achievement after giving treatment by using authentic materials through communicative approach. It was proved by the mean score of pre-test was 5.97 and the mean of post-test was 7.82. The data was analyzed by using t-test was higher than t-table value. The value of t-test was 9, while t-table value was 1.695 at the 0.05 level significance. Based on the result above, the writer concludes that the use of authentic material through communicative approach improves the students’ vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

Language politeness is very important in education, such as in classroom teaching and learning practices. During the teaching and learning process the teacher uses speech a lot to communicate with students showing politeness strategies. Considering language politeness, consists of strategies to make appropriate politeness in communication situations between students and teachers. Certainly in society, like in the classroom, politeness needs to be applied because politeness creates conflict between teachers and students. This means that politeness is used in classroom interactions in order to build a good relationship between teachers and students. Besides that. The politeness of the teacher's language is very helpful in motivating students to learn. In this study, the researcher analyzed the language politeness strategies used by the teacher and students in learning in the classroom. The purpose of this study was to find out the language politeness strategies used by English teachers in motivating students to learn in the Mandar Community. This study uses Brown's and S.C Levinson theory of politeness strategies for supporting this research. This study used qualitative methods to analyze data and explain English teacher politeness strategies in motivating students to learn which are used in daily conversation. The data sources of this study were English teachers and students in Alu disctrict Polewali Mandar regency. The instrument used in this research is observation From several conversational analyzes, several phenomena were found to be non-universal in the theory of B&L politeness, including the S&S theory in speaker conversations conducted by teachers and students in the Mandar language community carried out in several places and by several speakers. The theory assumes that the form of politeness strategy chosen by speech participants when interacting in the speaker's position as superior or superior to subordinates that occurs between school principals and teachers does not show a more casual speech pattern for school principals or more polite for teachers. caused by other factors such as friendship between the principal and teachers and seniority factors

Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the competence of teachers in learning English and the inhibiting factors for learning English during the Covid-19 pandemic at smk yppp Wonomulyo. This research was conducted in August and September 2021 using a mix method through interview data collection techniques for English teachers at smk yppp Wonomulyo and collecting several documents related to teacher competence. As well as giving tests to students as quantitative data. Based on the results of the study, it is known that the competence of English teachers during the covid-19 pandemic at smk yppp Wonomulyo is good, the teacher has implemented designing, implementing and evaluating learning even though learning is done online, making strategies that are in accordance with online learning, teachers must make emergency rpp and evaluate learning despite the many shortcomings and difficulties in carrying out online learning. The inhibiting factors for learning English during the covid-19 pandemic are the lack of availability of learning resources, there are still students who do not have an Android cellphone, limited internet quota, there are still many students who are ignorant of online learning.

Abstract

This research aims at finding out the use of Digital Language Learning better than the Traditional Language Learning to enrich the Adult EFL learners' schema in developing their speaking ability. This research also aimed at scrutinizing how the finding of Digital Learning Learning (DLL) challenges the theory of schema for adult EFL learners and exploring the learner's attitude. This research used a quasi-experimental research design. The samples of this research were the third-semester students of Universitas Sulawesi Barat which belonged to two groups; the experimental group and the control group. The research data were collected using two kinds of instruments; the speaking test and the questionnaire given to both groups. The research results indicated that: (1) the Digital Language Learning can significantly improve the learners' schema in developing the speaking ability than Traditional Language Learning. (2) This research disclosed some Digital Language Learning features namely knowledge sharing, active and collaborative learning, learner-centered, activity, and networking. Those features are the digital language learning better than Traditional Language Learning to enrich adult EFL learners in developing their speaking ability. (3)  Most of them agreed that the Digital Language Learning better than the Traditional Language Learning enriches the learners' schema in developing speaking ability. Of most significant importance, this research's novelty contributes to the schema theory that digital language learning better than traditional language learning, particularly interactivity and networking.

Abstract

The objectives of this research were (1) to explore kinds of students’ disruptive behaviors, (2) to find out teacher’s strategy in managing students’ disruptive behavior, (3) to explore factors causing students’ disruptive behavior and (4) to find out the impact of students’ disruptive behaviors on students’ speaking skill in SELF classroom of a senior high school. This research applied case study design in order to get more understanding about the phenomenon of students’ disruptive behaviors. In terms of participant, the researcher focused on observing the SEFL students of eleventh year at SMA Negeri 1 Tinambung, West Sulawesi. There were eleven classes and the researcher took one class purposively. Classroom observation was conducted in order to get the data about kinds of students’ disruptive behavior, teacher’s strategy in dealing with disruptive behavior, and impact of students’ disruptive behavior on students’ speaking skill. Moreover, semi-structured interview was used to get factors causing students’ disruptive behavior. There are eight kinds of disruptive behavior found in this research along with the new one namely inattention, apathy, moving about the room, annoying others, cheating, needless talk, disrupting (shouting), and exaggeration talk. In order to deal with students’ disruptive behavior, the teacher applied some strategies namely, proximity interference, touch interference, signal interference, calling out names, asking questions, request demands, and psychological punishment. Researcher also found five factors that cause students’ disruptive behavior which were classified into three categories namely physiological factor, environmental factors, and social factors and found that that disruptive behavior impacted linguistically on students’ speaking skills that covers students’ fluency, vocabulary, accuracy, and pronunciation.

Abstract

Vocabulary is one of important aspect before learning skill of English. Because of the students lack of vocabulary, the teacher should use a strategy to solve the problem. One of the strategies is using word wall website. This research aims to know the significant influence between the use of word wall website improve students’ vocabulary mastery. This research is done by using quantitative method with quasi experimental design. From the data analysis computed by using SPSS, then as the basis for decision that h0 is rejected and h1 is accepted. Based on the result of the research that has been done by the writer, the researcher concluded that using word wall website has a significant effect in improving students’ vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of using Media Resso on students' vocabulary mastery in the eighth grade (8) SMPN 2 Majene. This research is quantitative using a quasi-experimental design, and the subject of this research is 40 students. This study uses Cluster Random Sampling to determine the sample. Data was collected using pre-test and post-test instruments consisting of 20 questions in the form of Fill In The Blank and Matching words. The data analysis technique used is the Paired sample t-test with the SPSS version 20 application for windows. The results of the research analysis indicate that the average post-test score is 74.25, which is higher than the pre-test average value, which is 49.75. This means that Ha is acceptable. Therefore, Resso Media can affect students' vocabulary mastery after being given treatment.

Abstract

Purpose – The aim of this activity is to provide teachers with an overview of how to make a PTK and how to compile a PTK in the form of a scientific article. Design/methodology/approach – Service activities in the form of classroom Action Research (PTK) writing workshops were carried out at SMP Negeri 2 Majene. The implementation of PTK writing uses the blended learning method, which combines two types of methods, namely training carried out face-to-face with participants and training held online. The blended learning method was chosen to provide diverse training and adapt to the needs of teachers. It is hoped that this workshop can improve teachers' skills in writing PTK and help improve teacher professionalism. Findings – The results obtained, namely the evaluation before and after the activity, contained very significant differences. Before the activity, there were no participants who answered that they really knew for each question and most of the participants answered that they didn't know and very don't know, whereas after the activity there were no participants who answered that they didn't know and really didn't know for each question. The participants were very enthusiastic about the PTK training provided because this training could provide very extensive information regarding how to prepare a good PTK. Originality/value – Writing PTK is something that must be produced by teachers when proposing a promotion so that teachers must be able to write PTK in accordance with the rules for writing good and correct PTK, with this training teachers are greatly helped.
