Abstract

Sarcopenia is a medical condition characterized by a progressive decrease in skeletal muscle mass as well as muscle strength. Sarcopenia in the elderly causes an increased risk of falls, fractures and mortality. The main risk factors include advanced age, lack of physical activity, malnutrition, and chronic disease. Deficiency of albumin, a protein important for maintaining osmotic pressure and nutritional status, is often associated with malnutrition and sarkopenia. This community service activity was attended by 93 elderly people with an average age of 74 years. The results showed that the majority of participants had normal albumin levels, but there was a significant proportion who experienced hypoalbuminemia, more commonly found in men than women. Education and screening are carried out to increase awareness regarding the importance of albumin intake in preventing sarkopenia. A holistic and integrated nutritional approach is needed in the management of sarcopenia. Appropriate nutritional interventions, including increasing protein intake from foods such as snakehead fish, can increase serum albumin levels and prevent muscle mass loss. Collaboration between nutritionists, physicians, and other health professionals is essential to designing and implementing a comprehensive treatment plan. It is hoped that with appropriate monitoring and treatment, the quality of life of elderly people with sarkopenia can be improved. Keywords: albumin, education, hypoalbuminemia, elderly, sarcopenia

Abstract

Body composition refers to the various components that make up a person's body weight, such as lean mass (muscle, water, bones, ligaments, and tendons) and fat mass. As we age, significant changes occur in body composition, including increased fat mass and decreased muscle and bone mass, which often leads to sarcopenic obesity. This condition, which is common in older adults, is associated with frailty, disability, metabolic syndrome, reduced survival rates in certain cancers, and osteopenia/osteoporosis. This activity uses the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) method to measure the body composition of elderly participants at Hana Nursing Home, South Tangerang. A total of 40 participants underwent body composition examinations. The examination results showed that the average total body fat, visceral fat, subcutaneous fat, and skeletal muscle mass were 36.7% each; 8%; 27.6%; and 20.7%. We need to carry out routine body composition checks for early detection to provide timely management, ultimately improving long-term public health. Abstract

Abstract

Child malnutrition, both over and undernutrition, is a serious problem affecting millions of children worldwide, with significant short- and long-term impacts on children's health and development. This research study the correlation between dietary status and emotional and behavioural problem among primary school children in Ciherang Village. This study is a cross-sectional design in which children who satisfy the specified criteria will undergo weight and height measurements. Their body mass index (BMI) will be calculated and compared to the BMI-for-age chart (BMI/Age). Additionally, the children will complete the Pediatric Symptom Checklist 17 (PSC-17) questionnaire. A total of 246 children from 5 schools in the Ciherang area met the inclusion criteria. The analysis revealed a significant correlation between the average difference in body mass index and the total PSC 17 score (p-value=0.026). This study identified a comparison between children's dietary health and emotional and behavioural disorders. This serves as a reminder of the significance of monitoring children's development and implementing a well-rounded diet to promote children's mental well-being.
