Abstract

After the implementation of the 2013 national curriculum which excludes English from the primary school, many primary schools in Indonesia keep offering English to the students despite the uncertainty of the status of English for the primary school. However, the state of the practice of English currently in primary schools is barely unknown. This study is an attempt to portray the teachers that strive to teach English in the primary schools in one of the regencies that are still implementing English education. This survey study involved 44 randomly selected Primary English teachers (PETs) in the regency. The research instrument was a set of online (google format) and offline questionnaires. Results show that the majority of the teachers have English teaching qualification, however only very few ever attended pre-service or in-service training for teachers of young learners. The teachers also deal with employment uncertainty as primary English has no formal legal government policy. The findings bring about the issue of gaps and opportunities for professional developments of PETs and inequality in professional supports for PETs. Keywords: English for young learners (EYL), primary English, primary English teacher (PET) PROFIL GURU BAHASA INGGRIS SEKOLAH DASAR DI INDONESIA AbstrakSetelah penerapan Kurikulum 2013 yang tidak mengikutsertakan bahasa Inggris sebagai mata pelajaran pilihan muatan lokal (mulok) dalam kurikulum Sekolah Dasar (SD), banyak SD di Indonesia yang tetap menyelenggarakan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris dalam suasana ketidakpastian. Abstract

Materials are important resources for teachers in assisting pupils to learn English. In broader view, materials can be defined as anything which is used specifically with the intention of increasing pupil's knowledge and experience of the language. Therefore materials may include textbooks (course books), workbooks, story books, videos, cassettes, pictures, brochures, menus, interactive CDs, or other real-life artifacts, (Moon, 2003: 86). In choosing and selecting materials for the teaching practices, we need to have several considerations like whether we have to create the materials ourselves, how we can select appropriate materials for our pupils, how we can adapt the materials in assisting our learners in learning, and what the benefits are of either adapting or creating our own learning materials. The article then aims at discussing these considerations in choosing, selecting, or creating learning materials in the teaching of English for your learners.

Abstract

This minor study aims at describing learners’ features of pronunciation in terms of their suprasegmental aspects found in their speech. Students were asked to read aloud a text entitled The Gorilla Joke from the © BBC British Council 2006. Students oral narrations were then analysed in terms of their intonation pattern and stress assignment in sentence level. A metrical analysis was also used to show how students produced their speech rhythm. The result of the analysis shows that given the same text to read students may produce various combination of intonation patterns. Students also misplaced stress within the syllables or assigned no stress at all. Based on the metrical phonology analysis, learners did not assign foot timely based on the timing units in connected speeches. The speech production is more like a broken speech. Students also neglected the morphophonemics rules in which they did not produce the appropriate allomorphs [t], [d], and [id] in the past participle words. These features bring about some pedagogical implication. Keywords: student’ pronunciation features, suprasegmental aspects

A practicum, like any other educational practices, is supported by a set of an operating procedure or a guideline. The guideline may be in the form of a curriculum book, a syllabus, or a set of Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). The data were in the form of phrases and sentences taken from the practicum operating procedures and other relevant documents. The results showed that the most mentioned aspect of the documents was the learners’ roles. Abstract

International teaching practicums help pre-service teachers (PSTs) advance professionally in teaching and gain multicultural competence. This study aims at describing an investigation of challenges and problems faced by the pre-service teachers during their international teaching program in an Indonesian elementary school and how to cope with them revealed by the PSTs' voices. This qualitative case study started with conducting a survey questionnaire covering various aspects of results, challenges, and problems regarding the aspects of pedagogical, content knowledge, technology, and cultural gaps faced by 7 international pre-service teachers (PSTs) from the Netherlands. The survey results were then further examined through in-depth interviews with the PSTs and thematic analysis was conducted to examine the data. The findings showed that there were three categories of problems faced by the PSTs: issues from the students, problems from the PSTs, and problems from the schools or stakeholders. The PSTs could adapt to the situation and find solutions to the problems. They tried to be "Indonesians," enjoyed every activity and difference, and communicated to the right person to solve the problems. The study also revealed that the PSTs hoped that the lecturers could have spent more time at school and given them more advice. They wished the university could improve the scheduling system and give them a chance to teach in more than one school to be able to experience different school cultures. This study recommends further investigation of how a good international teaching program should be developed and managed. Keywords: pre-service teachers, international teaching practicum, teaching English to young learners
