Abstract

This research aimed to find the correlation among students’ motivation, vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension of the students four semester at Universitas Dharmas Indonesia in academic year 2017-2018. Motivation is the key factor in learning any language, especially in reading. Learning motivation influences the student’s interest and learning result. A person who has high motivation in reading will also has high interest in reading. It is based on the belief that the success and effectiveness of the teacher rest upon producing learner who are proficient and smart readers. Hence, the researcher is greatly challenged to conduct this research. The Correlative method was used in this research. It was used to find out the relationship of students’ motivation, vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension. A questionnaire and tests were used in collecting the data. They consisted of the students’ motivation questionnaire, reading test and vocabulary test. The statistical tools used in analyzing the data in this study were Descriptive Statistics and Pearson Product-Moment Correlation. The findings of the research were the students’ level in reading comprehension of the students’ four semester at Universitas Dharmas Indonesia was very good. The students’ level in vocabulary was poor. The students need to improve their vocabulary in order to comprehend the text. Moreover, the students four semester at Universitas Dharmas Indonesia were motivated in reading comprehension. There was a significant correlation among reading comprehension, vocabulary mastery and students’ motivation. In improving the students’ reading comprehension, the teacher should teach vocabulary to their students since vocabulary has strong relationship with reading comprehension. Having a good vocabulary makes the students understand the text easily. Vocabulary mastery is more important in helping the students to comprehend the text. Besides, motivation is also a key factor in reading comprehension. Motivation correlates significantly with the reading achievement. The students who are highly motivated will get better achievement in reading than those who are low or less motivated.   Keywords: students’ motivation,vocabulary mastery, reading comprehension.

Abstract

There are many aspects discussed in English Grammar, one of them is passive voice, Students usually found the difficulties when they are learning passive voice, such as lack of vocabulary, less of simple past tense understanding and also they got hard time to distinguish between active and passive voice because they did not know the basic tenses mainly in simple past tense form, so when they were shown the formula of passive voices, especially in simple past tense, they barely understood and confused. This researcher used qualitative method, the design of the research was case study. Researcher analyzed and described the data from the output of the test by using qualitative method. Then,researcher analyzed the students’ errors in transforming the passive voice, and to find out the type of errors, that the students made most in their test in transforming voice of simple past tense, and also to know in terms of verb “be”,correct verb, transformation active sentence into passive sentence and transformation passive sentence into active sentence. The results of this researcher are concludes that the types of error that were made by the in transforming the passive voice from the highest percentage to the lowest are error of misformation, error of omission, and error of misordering. Researcher found that the commonest errors made by the students were the errors of misformation which take up 108 errors or 57%. It i s followed by errors in omission with percentage 23%, and errors in misordering with percentage 20%.

Abstract

This research is written to develop English Computer Module based on Constructivism for Informatics Engineering Students. In Informatics Engineering department, graduates are expected to have an ability to speak English in order to compete in their job profession. Therefore, it is considered necessary to compile an English Computer module that is specific to the context and purpose with the students of the Informatics Engineering course. The main purpose of this research is to produce English Computer Module for Informatics Engineering students with valid, practice, and effective. The long term goal of this research is to make Engineering students are able to master English language that can be their provision in order to compete in their job profession. This teaching module developed by Constructivism. This research used Research and Development method of ADDIE (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate). This research was conducted in the second semester of Informatics Engineering students. In the analysis stage, it was conducted needs analysis and situation analysis. Design stage was conducted by designing Computer English modules based on tasks, lesson plan, and assessment instrument of Computer English modules. Develop stage was conducted by developing teaching material. Implement stage was conducted by implementing teaching material in Engineering class. Finally, the Evaluate stage was an evaluation of the implementation each stages of ADDIE model. The data in this research were collected by using the validation sheet of teaching material, lesson plan, questionnaires respond of Informatics Engineering English lecturer and Engineering students, and students test result. The result of this English Computer Module based on Constructivism for Informatics Engineering Students is valid, practice, effective criteria and accordance to the Engineering students’ needs.

Abstract

Class Wide Peer Tutoring (CWPT) Strategy is chosen to be applied in order to develop the teacher’s strategy in teaching learning process especially Narrative Text. The objective of the research is to examine whether or not Class Wide Peer Tutoring (CWPT) Strategy can improve students’ Reading Comprehension of grade eight students of SMP 1 Sungai Rumbai Dharmasraya. Besides, the researcher is also designed to study what happens when Class Wide Peer Tutoring (CWPT) Strategy applied.To get the data in this research, the researcher used test as an instrument. The researcher gave them multiple choice, to know how well the students already mastered reading comprehension on narrative text. The data of the research were collected in three steps as stated, Pre-test. The researcher gave pret-test to the control and experimental groups in order to know students reading comprehension level and to cover students score in mastering reading comprehension. Than treatment, The researcher prepared materials by giving treatment using CWPT in teaching narrative text for experimental group focused on reading comprehension and Questioning strategy for control group in order to compare both of the strategy given. The last Post-test. The researcher gave post-test to experimental group and control group after giving the treatment. After gathering the data, the researcher analyzed the students’ result by using a statistical formula which is called t-test. The researcher calculated the significant differences for Class Wide Peer Tutoring. By using CWPT strategy the teacher can increase students ability in reading comprehensin. The finding reveal that Class Wide Peer Tutoring (CWPT) strategy can improve students’ reading comprehension, where students work in pair, help each other to accomplish individual and pair task. Furthermore, in CWPT strategy the teacher guides the students in pair activities, provides feedback on pair fuctioning and intervenes when necessary. Class Wide Peer Tutoring (CWPT)  Strategy as used in this research gave good Impact to students’ Reading Comprehension, especially in narrative text of SMP 1 Grade Eight students Sungai Rumbai Dharmasraya. The use of this strategy helped the students comprehend the text, made the students participate actively in the learning process, gave good response during pairing activity, and provided fun which facilitated more learning.

Abstract

This research explore the Effectiveness of “thieves” Strategy Towards Students’ Reading Comprehension at the Eleventh Grade of SMAN 19 Tebo. The problems of this research are students lack of vocabulary, students did not have good motivation in reading text and the students have difficulty in comprehending texts. The purpose of the research is to know the effectiveness of THIEVES strategy towards students’ reading comprehension at the eleventh grade of SMAN 19 Tebo. This research focus on the quantitative research. The population in this study all 11 grades at SMAN 19 Tebo. In this study, the total population is 29, consist of class 11 IPS and 11 MIPA. Then, the sample in this study 11 IPS and II MIPA. Based on practical teaching English at SMAN 19 Tebo, the researcher find some problems in the class. Therefore the researcher applies strategy in reading, with this strategy students learn the THIEVES strategy before students read the text. The research findings indicate that the use of THIEVES strategy was able to improve the students’ reading comprehension. The conclusions of this research is supported by the post-test results of students’ reading comprehension at the eleventh grade students of SMAN 19 Tebo. The mean post-test experimental class is 78.75 and in the control class is 71.69. The differerence score between experimental class and control class was 7.06. The researcher find a positive impact on the experimental class. It means that students’ reading comprehension in experimental class was significantly improve and there is significantly different effect between experimental class and control class which teach by using THIEVES and without THIEVES. It indicates that the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. It presents that the THIEVES strategy give a significant effect on students’ reading comprehension of report text.

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilatar belakangi oleh temuan peneliti yaitu rendahnya hasil belajar siswa pada mata pelajaran PPKn pada siswa kelas III SDN 30/II Tanjung. Proses pembelajaran hanya menggunakan metode ceramah. Oleh karena itu hasil belajar siswa banyak yang di bawah KKM. Untuk itu, peneliti melakukan suatu penelitian menggunakan model Numbered Head Together (NHT). Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui pengaruh model Kooperatif Tipe Numbered Head Together (NHT) Terhadap Hasil Belajar PPKn Pada Siswa Kelas III Sekolah Dasar. Jenis penelitian ini adalah pre experimental design. Desain penelitian ini adalah one group pretest-posttest design. Penelitian dilakukan di SDN 30/ II Tanjung. Waktu dilaksanakannya penelitian ini pada semester II Tahun Pelajaran 2020/2021, disesuaikan pada jadwal pembelajaran tematik muatan PPKn kelas SDN 30/ II Tanjung. Sampel pada penelitian ini berjumlah 22 siswa. Berdasarkan hasil uji paired samples t test diperoleh signifikasi 0,000<0,05. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa terdapat pengaruh model Numbered Head Together (NHT) terhadap hasil belajar PPKn pada siswa kelas III sekolah dasar. Berdasarkan penelitian, bahwa model Numbered Head Together (NHT). memberikan pengaruh yang baik terhadap hasil belajar PPKn. Numbered Head Together (NHT) dapat digunakan guru untuk mengaitkan materi pelajaran dengan dunia nyata siswa, menjadikan siswa aktif serta model Numbered Head Together (NHT) dapat meningkatkan hasil belajar siswa.

Abstract

Strategi guru dilakukan untuk tercapainya suatu proses pembelajaran yang telah di rencanakan. Minat baca pada peserta didik tidak bisa tumbuh dengan sendirinya, akan tetapi membutuhkan peranan orang lain dalam menumbuhkan minat baca. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis adakah strategi guru kelas IV C SD Negeri 102/II Sungai Kerjan dalam menumbuhkan minat baca peserta didik pada masa belajar jarak jauh di era covid-19. Jenis penelitian ini penelitian kualitatif yaitu penelitian yang bersifat deskriptif dan cenderung menggunakan analisis berupa kata-kata seseorang, tulisan, atau lisan tentang perilaku seseorang yang dapat diamati. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan cara mewawancarai guru wali kelas IV C. Teknik pengumpulan data penelitian dengan melakukan observasi, wawancara dan dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa guru wali kelas IV C memiliki strategi dalam menumbuhkan minat baca peserta didik yaitu dengan cara memberi tugas membaca, memberi bahan bacaan yang menarik, memotivasi peserta didik, memberikan instruksi dengan jelas, memanfaatkan pojok baca, memberikan reward untuk menambah semangat peserta didik membaca dan bekerjasama dengan orang tua.

Abstract

This research is concerned with The Effect of Outdoor Classroom Activity to the Writing Skill for student’s English department Universitas of Dharmas Indonesia. The objective of this research is to find out whether there is a significant difference in teaching writing skills between the students who are taught by using outdoor classroom activity and those who are not taught by using outdoor classroom activity. The implement of outdoor classroom activity in teaching learning process especially in writing skills can be assumed students' knowledge through the solid situation such as caring students outdoor the classroom so that the students can analyze their minds through what they observe and examine precisely. Hence, this research used an experimental research that was taken at first semester students' English Department. The experimental research involved two classes of students. The sample of this research was taken randomly. Both classes were provide pre-test and post-test. Next, the students of the group were learned by proving outdoor classroom activity at the same time the control group is learned beyond outdoor classroom activity. The occur of this research, as chases: The analysis occur of the experimental class offers that the mean count of the pre-test is 45.47 and the means count of the post-test is 71.82. It offers that the experimental class can improve student writing skill in learning process.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to obtain empirical evidence about the effectiveness of the use of the Process Approach on the ability to write argumentative texts of students in the eleventh grade of MAS Al Barokah. The population of this study was the eleventh grade students of MAS Al Barokah with a total sample of 25 students. The method used in this study is a quantitative method using a pre-experimental design, one grub pretest-posttest. The research instrument used in this research is a set of written tests which are given at the beginning of the meeting and at the end of the meeting after the Process Approach is applied. The data from this study were analyzed using t-test. The results obtained from the research show that there are differences in student scores in writing argumentative texts using the Process Approach before and after being given treatment. The results shown from the post-test p-value is 0.000 with a significance level of 5% (0.05). In other words, it can be concluded if the p-value (0.000) < sig a=0.05 (5%). This proves that using the Process Approach is quite effective on the ability to write argumentative texts for eleventh graders at MAS Al Barokah for the 2021/2022 academic year

Abstract

This study aims to analyzed errors in the used of simple past in narrative text and writing comprehension in the tenth grade of SMAN 1 Sitiung. The problems of this research are students can not difference about simple past, students did not understand the formula of simple past, students made grammatical errors when they used simple past tenses. The aims of this research are to find out the kinds of errors made by the students on the used of simple past to find out the dominant error on the used of simple past tense in narrative text. The methode of this research is qualitative research. The sample in this study was class X MIPA 3. The research found several problems in the class. Therefore the researcher analyzed the types of errors made by the students. The findings of this study indicate that there are 4 types of errors frequency being omission with 45 (51.14%), followed by misformation with 17 (19.32%) then addition with 15 (17.05%) and the last one misordering with 11 (12.5%). Based on the results of the study, The concluded that most students still feel confused and therefore still make mistakes when writing English texts, especially narrative texts
