Abstract

Reading comprehension is considered a challenging part of learning English for many Indonesian secondary school students. This study aims to explore the causes, impacts, and possible solutions for poor reading comprehension issues. The study scrutinizes the issue by reviewing previous studies, in which a number of articles and books were critically analyzed. The results indicate that poor reading comprehension occurs due to three remarkable factors, which are students’ lack of motivation, low prior knowledge, and poor English vocabulary. Moreover, this issue also leads to three main adverse impacts, such as reducing students’ learning achievement, hindering students’ problem-solving skills, and inhibiting students’ future studies and careers. Therefore, in responding to the problem above, this study proposes two learning approaches, which are the Cooperative Integrated and Reading Composition (CIRC) Technique and Metacognitive Strategy.

Abstract

This study explores the teachers’ perceptions of using the first language (L1) when teaching English. The conceptual work of literature review is applied as the research method. This means previous works were analysed to investigate teachers’ perceptions toward the L1 use in teaching English. The result shows that the L1 can be used in teaching grammar, vocabulary, and giving instructions. Teachers are also divided into three positions in perceiving the use of L1 in teaching English, which are the virtual, maximal, and optimal position. Therefore, teachers might use this study’s results as the information to use the L1 in classrooms. This may also be beneficial for Indonesian educational stakeholders and the government to specifically define the use of L1 in teaching English.

Abstract

This study is driven by a desire to develop LKPD in class IV fractions using Realistic Mathematics Education, in order to increase student interest in learning and improve student learning outcomes in the content being taught. To attain this purpose, efforts must be made to establish LKPD as teaching resources through Realistic Mathematics Education. Research and Development (R&D) is the kind of study, and it follow the ADDIE development model, which has consist several stages (Analyze, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation). The test subjects in this study were fourth grade students. Three validators carried out the assessment instrument: content, construct, and language. As a measure of learning efficacy, fill out the validation instrument sheet, the practicality sheet produced by the practitioner, and its success is assessed from student learning outcomes. The validator value obtained a value of 83 percent in the highly valid category, and the practicality value obtained a value of 91 percent in the very practical category, as a result of the development of LKPD. The results of the effectiveness score obtained a value of 82 percent, indicating that the very practical category is very useful in increasing learning outcomes.

Abstract

A good education in low-classes does not only aim to foster an academic aspect, but also establish a non-academic side in order to have good personality and characters. Hence, mathematics is one of the sciences that is appropriate to develop all of these potentials. Some prior research results have delineated that mathematics is not only effective to expand students’ intelligence, but also form learners’ characters. Therefore, this paper presents that the Holistic Mathematics Education (HME) model based on among system is one of the educational values used to develop students’ characters in low-classes.
