Abstract

Many educators regard the practice of pedagogical reflection as a prime motivator in the professional growth of teachers. This idea has spurred the realization of the practice of reflection since the early stages of the university's teacher education program. Several scholars have developed their ideas regarding excellent practices in reflection throughout the years. They presented methodologies, concepts, and ways to construct the course of reflection from non-reflective to critical reflective by identifying the reflective thought process and underpinning the degrees of reflection. These ideas would also allow educators to create evaluations for reflective practice. However, this sound theoretical framework is frequently riddled with flaws that linger to the present time, particularly about the extent to which such activity will provide noteworthy growth for teachers, as well as the legitimacy of its reflexivity itself. This paper tries to revisit the origin of the concept, the development, and pinpoint the persistent issues. This, hopefully, would enable us to seek the deeper insight into the dynamics of reflective practice in teacher education program.

Abstract

This research was conducted to analyze how the identity seeking of the main character, Matt Buckner, in Green Street Hooligans (2005) movie was portrayed semiotically.  The term identity can be defined as an expression of the inner self, and the role of ourselves in the world to find the meaning of life and as a guide in life to find happiness. The subject of this research was the Green Street Hooligans (2005) movie directed by Lexi Alexander and the object was the representation of the main character’s identity seeking through images of the scene and dialogues found in the movie. The data were collected through watching and analyzing the movie, reading several related articles, taking notes on the important elements, and classifying the data. In analyzing the data, the researchers used a descriptive qualitative approach and adopted the semiotic analysis technique by Charles Sander Peirce (Hoed, 2007). As A Result, the researchers discovered that Matt Buckner's life before being a Hooligan was just like a normal student’s. Second, Matt Buckner’s identity started to transform when he met Pete and join the GSE firm. The last, and the reasons why Matt Buckner joined the Hooligan was that he felt more appreciated and well-known when he became Hooligan, also he was proud to be a Yankee surrounded by the GSE members. Every sign represented in movie have its meaning, and to comprehend those all signs used a semiotic approach. Based on the result of this research, the researchers able to understand the meaning that represented in the Green Street Hooligans movie.

Abstract

The research focused on archetypal elements in the Disney film Cruella. The goal was to see how Estella's personality reflected Jung's archetype theory. Carl Gustav Jung identified the major archetypes, which are the result of shared ancestral experiences that can be found in art, literature, and religion but are not readily evident to the naked eye. Archetypes are inherited, universal patterns of people, actions, or personalities that have an impact on human behaviour. Watching the movie, reading the movie's transcription, selecting quotes, studying cinematographic elements, identifying the data based on the study's theme, and classifying the data to point out the issues of Jung's archetype in the movie were all used to assemble the data. According to the findings, Jung's archetypes were depicted in the film. The results of the research revealed that the main character's speech and actions reflected Jung's archetypes. According to the discussion, Estella's mental growth is obtained from three aspects: her persona, shadow, and self-realization. Self-realization is attained through breaking free from the constraints of the persona, recognizing and accepting the shadow, and balancing the two sides. Despite being difficult and perhaps dangerous, those are critical stages on the way to mental and psychic developmen

Abstract

Verbal utterances and nonverbal utterances are acknowledged to be semantically and pragmatically coexpressive. Previous theories reveal that gestures are useful for teacher’s conceptual planning of messages and student’s comprehension and learning motivation. This study is carried out using an observational study and aimed to give insight into the use of gestures by EFL teacher during the teaching in the language classroom. An Islamic senior high school EFL teacher with a bilingual classroom become the participant of this study. A video recording is put on the back of the classroom aimed to capture the teacher’s gestures and the teacher and the students’ interaction, an audio recording is placed on the teacher’s front table, and the researcher is on the corner of the classroom to observe the teaching process synchronously. The data collected were transcribed then analysed using AS-Unit for recognizing the English utterances and the categorization of gestures was adopted from Wang and Loewen (2016). The finding elaboratively describes the use of gestures (i.e., iconics, metaphorics, deictics, beats, head movements, affect displays, kinetographs, and emblems) produced by the teacher in her classroom utterances. The finding shows that the gestures take a big part in supporting the teacher as speaker in teacher’s complex lexical retrieval. Also, the visual of the use gestures is provided. Therefore, the result of this study serves as a teaching reflection and can be employed as a model to provide language learning comprehensible input in the language classroom.

Abstract

Authenticity is an important quality every individual should have as it reflects self-understanding and healthy functioning. However, due to the societal norms, such as gender stereotypes, the idea of being authentic has become a challenge. Oftentimes, when it comes to gender stereotypes, women get the short end of the stick—underestimated, ignored, and sexualized. The uprising feminism movement indeed makes a great impact of how women are viewed, but the media is still lacking of authentic representation of female character who isn’t trying to fit into a certain role. Avatar: The Last Airbender is able to provide that through Katara character despite it being a children’s TV series. Using the theory by Kernis and Goldman, this paper explores the four multicomponents of authenticity—awareness, unbiased processing, behaviour, relational orientation—which are all possessed by Katara; furthermore, proving her authenticity. This paper argues that Katara is able to maintain her authenticity by acting in accordance with her internal values, particularly in terms of equality and justice. In so doing, she manages to fight sexism and empower the oppressed.

Furthermore, this research applies a systematic analysis method that identifies the literature available on Google Scholar. This method has been used to produce original research as well as help researchers to critically analyze, evaluate and synthesize complex ideas. The five phases of systematic literature review are: 1) Framing questions for review 2) Relevant work 3) Assessing study quality 4) Summarizing the evidence 5) Interpret findings. From the results of the review a description it can be understood that there are student problems; they first have difficulty in terms of grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation. However, they also have problems in their psychology in learning speaking. Regarding online learning reviews, online learning is one of the alternative solutions for the learning process, including for students and teachers, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although it raises some problems, for teachers and students, all parties must be ready to implement it. So that online learning has positive and negative impacts.

Abstract

Indonesian  minister of education  attemps to raise up an issue about  developing character education amongst indonesian schools based on the goal of Indonesia’s national education law No.20Year 2003. Adeyemi(2009) justifies that the concept of teaching character education should not be seen as the prerogative of subject alone. It should be taught integrated through any subject such as mathematics, science, humanities, social sciences, civic, sports, and so on, and in this case language, foreign language, national language, or even local language. The two ideas promoted here relating to build character in students are   storytelling and   bulletin board.  Those can be employed by teacher in establishing language class; in addition, inserting other pertinent subjects to the material is possible to do.  KEYWORDS:storytelling, bulletin board.

Abstract

The central goals of this study are to see the implementation of Project-Based Learning for English diploma program students, to see the students' perceptions toward the implementation of project-based learning, and to see the challenges of its implementation in online learning. The research method is a descriptive qualitative method that used Stoller and Simpson theories to analyze the implementation of Project-based Learning in online learning. The results of this study show that 77.1% of respondents are satisfied with the implementation of project-based learning. They also obtained 82.07, which means the students are able to achieve the learning outcome very well. There are some challenges in implementing project-based learning in the pandemic era. They needed autonomous learning methods, especially in mastering language skills, knowledge, and IT skills. However, to achieve learning outcomes and to solve the problems, the students independently discussed and worked together in their group to finish their project. The effect of this process, students are more independent, critical, communicative, and creative in working on the project. Based on the positive findings, project-based learning becomes one of the alternative methods for assisting English diploma program students in acquiring 4Cs.
