Abstract

AbstractThe language of songs can be seen as one of the results of the ever-changing system of language itself. In linguistic views, the language of songs is often seen as similar to the language of poems. That is, in the language of songs, the composers formulate some expressions to describe diverse experiences. Perhaps one of the most significant evolutionary changes of language system is the introduction of the new meaning(s) of a word as its internal states and its relationships to other words. The relationship between one word with another—strung both syntactically and stylistically—can produce meaningful strings and are capable of stimulating extra meanings. Applying the theories of syntax and stylistics, this paper is intended to analyze how some expressions in the song “Aubrey” offer some possible extra logical meanings and make it a very popular song in the 70s up to the present day. Keywords: extra logical meaning, metaphor, senses

Abstract

This article aims to explore the work of fate in the sense of natural law and its manifestation in leading the life of the heroine in Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the D’Urbervilles. The theoretical framework is the concept of fate and Sartre’s Existentialism by applying the concept of free will and personal responsibility. The analysis focuses on any natural events that happen in Tess’ life, which eventually become such fate agents in determining Tess’ life. The finding says that no matter how fateful her life is, Tess exhibits how much she stands on her own by revealing her own free will and her personal responsibility regarding her reaction towards the fateful events she undergoes.

Abstract

ABSTRACTWriting skill is considered difficult for students because they get difficult to develop the idea, apply the grammar, do not have any vocabularies. The objective of this research are to describe the effetiveness of Numbered Heads Together technique, to know signficant difference of using NHT compares to talking stick in teaching writing hortatory exposition text. This research was done on April, 13th 2016 to May, 17th 2016. This research used experimental design that the sample used XI-IPA3 as control class and XI-IPA4 as experimental class of SMA Wachid Hasyim1 Surabaya. Based on result of the research, NHT is effective to be used because the result of independent samples test showed that tcount>ttable (4,139>0,172). It means that H1 is accepted, there is significant difference between student’s ability in control and experimental class. Abstract

The GI or group investigation is one of the cooperative learning teaching method and little used in English language teaching classroom. In GI students take an active part in establishing their learning goals. A method which ask the students to choose the topic selection, plan, implement, analyze, present, and evaluate. This paper reports a study of implementing the GI method in teaching speaking for the 10th grade students‟ at SMAN 1 Paciran Lamongan. Here, the students still have difficulty in using their English orally. One of the reasons is the lack of confidence they have when they should speak in front of the classroom, so they hope to have a partner to discuss with in order to be more confident to speak up. GI is the right solution to solve the students‟ speaking problem. A descriptive research method is used to get the finding of the study, observation checklist, questionnaire, and practical test are the instruments used to collect the data. The data shows that students are strongly increasing in speaking English from 47.2% to 66.6%. Key words: Speaking ability, The GI method

Abstract

AbstractThis study is conducted by analyzing the intended meanings lies behind the utterances in the dialogues of Peanuts Comic Strips in the Jakarta Post. Particularly, this study is aimed at analyzing the general socio-cultural knowledge applied to find the intended meanings, the kind of visual images used by the author to transmit the message, and the goals of the comic strips being loaded in the newspapers. Qualitative approach and content analysis is applied to get descriptive information. Specifically, this study uses Critical Discourse Analysis as the research technique. It sees the goal of the comic strips being loaded in the newspaper from the similarity of the storylines and the ideologies shared with the certain news. Keywords: critical discourse analysis, comic strips, intended meaning

Abstract

AbstractThe Dante Club is an American historical fiction written by Matthew Pearl. Thestory takes place in the state of Massachusetts during the aftermath of theAmerican Civil War. The two major issues presented in the novel are xenophobia and anti-Catholicism. Specifically, it tells about a controversy over the Italian literary work, “Divine Comedy”, which is being translated into English by a group of notable poets named Dante Club. Their endeavor is considered as promoting Catholicism which is subjectively interpreted as an act of threatening the state. Based on Louis Althusser’s theoretical perspective, the work of the state authorities to hinder the group’s effort is seen as the manifestation of ideological practice. The theory points out that such an interference may commonly be found to be performed by two types of powerful institution, namely Ideological State Apparatuses (ISAs) and Repressive State Apparatuses (RSAs).This study discusses the practice of state ideology which is intended to maintain the state power as described in the novel. The focus is on answering the question of how ISAs and RSAs are authorized to exert their role to control people as well as to influence them on behalf of the state.Keywords: Ideology, Ideological State Apparatuses, Repressive State Apparatuses, Divine Comedy

Abstract

The process of determining the possible intention or purpose of Alice’s utterances is decipherable by applying politeness theory, particularly positive politeness strategy proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987) as the main approach. The way she performs her efforts or struggle are mostly stated by using optimistic strategy which aims to ensure her interlocutor that she is “still Alice” who has outstanding intelligence and brightness and considered as a high flying academic carrer woman. It is shown through the modal verb “can” which expresses her abilities to conduct her activities and the tobe “am/is” that illustrates her conviction in delivering statements. It means that she builds and performs the optimism to maintain everything which has been accumulated by herself. Promise and giving understanding strategy are also used to portray the way she faces and survives on her Alzheimer. In promise strategy, it is shown through the modal verb “will” which indicates that she has a high intention to do something. While, in giving understanding strategy, it can be seen from innovative ways applied by herself. Although she has a disease which usually gets worse over time, but she tries hard with kinds of way to conquer it. Based on the previous description, there are some significances about positive politeness strategy in language. It is not only a strategy that is used to utter or assert a statement but it is also able to reveal the hidden meaning of the speaker. Therefore, by using positive politeness strategy, people can detect what actually desired by the speaker. In this research, this strategy is used by Alice because she wants to show that she tries hard for struggling against her Alzheimer. It is conducted by Alice as she does not want that the Alzheimer hold a rein on herself which can limit her abilities, break her carrer, and also affect the harmony of her family.

Abstract

It is seen that there is an existence of gender-stereotype that unwittingly occurred in children's literature. The gender-stereotype of how man and woman should be and behave considering on his/her proper activities in a real life might be portrayed throughout the symbolizations in which numerous readers do not understand what they are about, whereas those symbols of gender-stereotype are teaching the children the concept of masculinity and femininity. This study thus scrutinizes the symbols of gender-stereotype in Hans Christian Andersen‟s The Little Mermaid. The data analysis is in the form of symbols which have the issues of gender-stereotype taken from the original fairy tale of The Little Mermaid in 1836. The aims of this study are to find out the symbols of gender-stereotype and describe the meaning of each symbol. Utilizing descriptive qualitative method, the results of this study are the symbols which have the gender-stereotype of masculinity are “King” related to non-emotional and intellectuality in authority of a man. “Knife” is found allied to the masculinity trait of a strong man and “Sword” is an analogue of a brave, adventurous and intellectual man. Moreover, the symbols of femininity found are the “Mermaid or Siren” is interwoven to such the embodiment of a flirtatious woman. “Long Hair” is germane to a loyal and submissive woman. Abstract

AbstractThis study aims to describe how the participants (senders and receivers) flout conversational maxims in short messages. In this study, the source is taken from short messages that are sent via a provider because nowadays most people do communication with others using mobile phone. This study uses Grice’s theory of cooperative principle is used especially the flouting of maxims (maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relevance, and maxim of manner). All kinds of those flouting that exist in short messages are analyzed, which are delivered by the participants (senders and receivers). This research uses qualitative descriptive. The utterances produced by the participants, the senders and the receivers, when they were conversing with each others in term of short messages or texting (SMS) were analyzed and described. The data of the research were written data, collected from the utterances, which contain flouting performed by the senders and the receivers in the short messages or texting (SMS). The result of the research shows that in maxim of quantity, they flout by adding more information and giving a little information. In maxim of quality, all of the participants flout it by saying what they believed false. In maxim of relevance, the participants flouted it by saying irrelevant responses. In maxim of manner, moreover, the participants flouted it by saying convoluted words which are extremely long-winded. The conversational maxim are mostly flouted by the participants (sender and receiver) in the short massages is maxim of quantity. Abstract

AbstractThis research discusses two of the strategies proposed by Machali which are applied by the translators in translating the Indonesian news texts on the official website of The Indonesian Republic Government Secretariat into the English news texts on the same website. The strategies are transposition and modulation. Research statements of this research are (1) how is the transposition strategy in translating the texts on the official website of The Indonesian Republic Government Secretariat Ministry (2) how is the modulation strategy in translating the texts on the official website of The Indonesian Republic Government Secretariat Ministry. The data collection method in this research are reading and note taking methods that are reading and taking notes the data based on Machali’s strategies. Then, the collected data are analyzed by identifying the transposition and modulation strategies applied by the translators and described them in words. From the analysis of the data the researcher concludes that in translating the Indonesian source texts into the English target texts, the translators apply the two strategies or procedures among the five strategies proposed by Machali. They are transposition and modulation. Transposition strategy is more dominant than modulation strategy.Keywords: strategy, translation, transposition, modulation, accuracy
