Abstract

This paper explores the urban planning initiatives in revitalisation as usefull approach for intervention in derelict areas and buildings who had important role in the past and the government decided to restore for cultural and social purposes. Revitalisation policies tend to address urban growth within built-up cores by enhancing historical areas and derelict areas and neighborhoods. Meanwhile, urban expansion tends to be related to either suburban growth in developed regions or informal settlements in developing countries. Within the last forty years, city councils in all regions have needed to address urban issues with ever tighter budgets and so they do experience similar problems, particularly in relation to planning issues. Greater Resistencia, a city located in one of the poorest region within Argentina, was always been supported by National Government, is not exception to this rule. These initiatives can be seen as starting point to fuelled local economy and reduced dependence from National Government. This paper will explore one of the urban revitalization initiatives currently applying in Greater Resistencia (Argentina) and attempts to analyze the achievement and failures, assessing them, by taking examples in Resistencia and recent experiences in Preston (UK)

Abstract

This paper is a reflection upon the issue of urban flooding, attempts to adapt to it and strategic risk reduction measures of those with responsibility for planning at the level of the city region. Following the introduction, flooding hazards are considered within the context of global environmental processes and rapid urbanisation, and the paper has a discussion of both theoretical and policy perspectives to urban flood risk and vulnerability. Consideration is then given to a broad range of potential interventions that could be available to stakeholders, before, during or after a flooding event, whether the measure would be undertaken by a government, member(s) of the community or the private sector. Finally, in the context of international policy guidance, consideration is given to the role that city planners could make in addressing the risk of flooding emergencies through more strategic, medium and long-term approaches. The paper concludes that collaborative forms of governance with the full engagement of the community are essential for disaster risk resilience

Abstract

Malaysia is one of country in with tropical climate that many people using air conditioning system to get indoor thermal comfort level. Computer simulation is one of method to predict the thermal performance of building. This paper focused on the thermal analysis of one storey row residential building at Bandar Universiti, Seri Iskandar, Perak, Malaysia. The objectives of this research were to investigate thermal performance of a residential building in tropical climate by Ecotect software simulation and to compare between ceramic roof, metallic roof and green roof due to temperature reduction. This research has focused on single storey terrace houses in Bandar Universiti, Seri Iskandar, Perak, Malaysia. The building model was row house for single family (livingroom-diningroom and master bedroom) and simulated using Autodesk Ecotect Analysis 2011 software. Metal roof has highest range of maximum and minimum compared with clay roof, concrete roof, and green roof. The lowest indoor air temperature was reached under green roof. Green roof can reduce indoor temperature from outdoor air temperature more and longer than clay roof, concrete roof, and metal roof. The result of simulation analysis indicated that green roof could reduce indoor temperature more than other roof types. This study suggests that green roof can be used in residential building in tropical climate.

Abstract

This article explores the relation between bus rapid transit (BRT) system and urban development. This article was written through a multi-staged comprehensive literature review. It includes a general overview on widely observed BRT performance indicators. Findings in terms of the influence of Boston Silver Line 4 and 5 and Seoul BRT systems on urban development around the systems are quoted and used as case studies. Investigation on the performance of Boston SL 4/5 and Seoul BRT systems are provided. This article shows that two BRT systems of different performance are able to influence urban development around the systems in varying degrees. Further investigation is needed to explain the nature of the relation between BRT performance and influence towards urban development.
